Newfoundland - Labrador
I'm heading to Nova Scotia some time in late June early May. But I really want to make it to Newfoundland and Lab. I'll be riding a a street bike (BMW F800 ST) and have no real desire to deal with gravel/unpaved roads. So I've been wondering what to do, should I go there or not? :helpsmilie:

Somewhere around here you will find Tiffany's trip to Labrador and if you ask her nicely she might give you some advice on the viability of what you plan.

I would go to New Found Land but not Labrador... From Manic5, Qc to Happy-Valley/Goose-Bay in Labrador, you have approximately 1000 km and 90% of it is on gravel road with a lot of construction in Spring. The photos below were taken during my trip in 2009 and will give you an idea of what can be expected. Driving on such roads will litteraly wash out any paint on engine / frame and will attack aluminum.

It's True
Hi Howard
I've replied to your PM with some advice and yes, it's true there is a LOT of unpaved road in Labrador. http://tiffanystravels.smugmug.com/M..._bL2TY-M-3.jpg http://tiffanystravels.smugmug.com/M..._6y2ei-M-1.jpg What you don't see in these pictures is the DEEP gravel, because at that point you're concentrating too much on keeping the bike upright and travelling in the correct direction. This is especially true if you're on your own as I was. |
In 1999 we went St. Anthony, Newfoundland two-up on our BMW R100R.
It was paved all the way. Lots of pot holes. We went to see the Viking settlement. http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/nl/meadows/index.aspx |
