Northern Mozambique to Tanzania - HOW ??
Hello !
Does anyone know what the situation is re. travelling overland from Mozambique to Tanzania. Ive heard differing things from a bridge disappearing to having to take my vehicle on a canoe !! Can anyone tell me how I can cross - if at all !! |
yes, i'll just go and get my map
------------------ |
the road from lichinga to pemba is supposed to be impassable because of the bridge before marrupa having been washed away and collapsing so all vehicles now take the long south way round. saying that, it is africa and i`m sure there will be a nice man with some logs strapped together who would get you across.
there is a road north from lichinga to unango and then a track to the rio rovuma where there is nice man.there is a sort of immigration but you cant get any stamps.the track gradually gets bigger and wider as you get to songea where there is a customs man who will do exactly what you tell him..be aware that it is about 550 kms between anything so be prepared and try to stay with the roadbuilders.dont go if there has been rain. we were down to 1km every 3hrs at a couple of points, digging and carrying.truly awesome scenery though. ------------------ |
went there - its still not working !!!!
thanks for your help tho !!! |
looking for updated Moz-Tanzania crossing info...
so i heard the ferry over the rio in the north eastern moz side to tanzania has sunk...and that the 'bridge' which was supposed to be finished in november 2008 is still a long way off...just wondering if anyone has found a way to cross with ga 4x4...
please let me know - and if you're really keen, please email me! ianfotheringham@gmail.com thanks, ian |
I crossed on two wheels just over a year ago so this isn't fresh news but I put my bike onto one of the little dingy boats. They aren't dugout canoes as many legends suggest, but quite large. When I crossed we got half way out when I saw the ferry moored & hidden around a corner. I suspect the ferry runs (when tidal level of the river allows) but the dingy boys pay off the ferry operator to take their smaller boats over for small traffic like bikes.
I met a German guy that 6 weeks before me crossed via ferry in his Land Cruiser but the ferry got stuck on a sand bank for a couple of days. In the end they tied planks across all three of the dingy's & drove his vehicle off the ferry onto the barge and made the crossing. Quite hair-raising but a last resort |
