Pamir Highway
Planning for ride across Central Asia sometime end of May 2015 starting off from Almaty. Any restriction of road closures during that period or are they opened all year long? Weather wise? Some advise please.

Pamir Highway
Hi, I left Almaty on the 15th of June this year, so not much later than you're planning to next year. The only obstacle was a land slide blocking the road to Sary Tash so it was a long detour to get into Tajikistan.
You can see the route we took here : galleries |
We enterd the Pamir this Year around the 12th of July and had Snow on the tent One Night. Another Day we had Snow and hail on 4600 meters high. You are in High Mountains for Some days and You will Love the Summer there.

Hi yempaul, I'm lookin for the same road on the same time, I just know you need a pass called GBAO to transit on that country.

hi scalpo
when Simon and I crossed in 2009 the GBAO was an option to 'tick' (request) when we applied for our visa and the stamp was included. nice and easy. do double-check though when you apply. someone here may also have some more up-to-date info on this. it is a gorgeous part of the world to travel. make sure you have some nice warm kit ;-) |

Hi Paul. Agree with what was said. Weather has to be your friend. Road is cleared usually fairly quickly after slides or snow.
Pass by if you have time. CHeers |
Hi David. What direction? We will be too, coming from the west.
