Road of Bones
I'm considering possible routes for a forthcoming (I hope!) year long career break. I was considering a trip down and up Africa (and may still do it), but am also checking out possible alternatives. One of which is a RTW trip, starting in the UK. The main area of concern for this would be Eastern Russia and the 'Road of Bones'.
Has anyone any recent experience of this road and it's condition and when would be the best time of year to ride it? Thanks in advance Chris |
Hi Chris,
I did it with a friend east to west last week of July this year. Was a great ride, weather was good and rivers were low. I think it really depends on how lucky you are with the weather as to how difficult it is. We were on KTM 690's which had no problem in coping with the track. I'm going to stick a vid up on youtube in the next day of so of it so you can have a look and see what you could be dealing with. Mark |
I did the new highway on the RoB last summer. The new road is pretty easy, with minimal water-crossings; the Old Summer Road is pretty weather-dependent and I wouldn't try it by yourself, as it is pretty remote.
The Lena Highway, from Yakutsk to the main Siberian highway, is about 1000 km of gravel road. Not technically difficult, but pretty unpleasant because it is long and boring and can be very dusty, etc. If you want an easier ride you can just stick to the main Siberian highway from Vladivostok. |
I was talking about the "old summer road" via Tomtor not the M56 through Ust Nera.
We actually found the M56 from the end of the old summer road (west) to Yakutsk was worse, lots of road works, lorries, dust, rocks and loose gravel/sand. Not a nice road to travel on. Mark |
Thanks for the info guys

Hi Mark.
Do you have a any link to youtube where the video from your trip is located ?? THX Rusty |
Hi Rusty,
I did put together a youtube on the RoB between Kadychan and Kyubeme, missed out some interesting bits but i'm not very good at videos and stuff. It will give you an idea of the road condition we had this year at the end of July. The weather was good and the rivers were low, bogs had dried up so no problem at all, was a fanastic ride!
