Rohtang (first pass Manali-Leh highway) closed for vehicles older then 10 years
We found out that the permit needed to cross the first pass between Manali and Leh (Himachal Pradesh - Jammu&Kashmir - India) is not granted for vehicles older then 10 years.
Even our 'brand new' CT110 postiebikes (2001 and 2005) that are in far better condition then many new Indian contraptions were not allowed. There is a way around, via Kinnaur into Spiti and on to Keylong and Leh, which is well worth the effort if you've got time, and because of the more gradual ascent, the acclimatisation to the height is easier. If you don't want to take this route however, our friend Anu at Bike Tours in India, Himalaya Guided motorcycle tour, Bike Tours in Himalaya, motorcycle tour ladakh, motorbike adventures india, Royal enfield mountain ride, north india motorcycle touring in Manali can arrange transport over the Rohtang Pass in the back of a van. I would like to take this opportunity to recommend Anu if you are considering renting an Enfield and/or taking a tour in the Himalaya. He has got a lot of well looked after Royal Enfields for rent, can organize packaged tours, has some skilled mechanics and is an Awesome guy. Visit him if you are around! Enjoy! We know you will! |
I crossed Rohtang pass on a 1997 enfield last august and I saw many older bikes doing the same.
I don't know if rules changed in the last 2 months, but this info looks at least not complete to me. |
That would mean surely most of India's fleet of trucks would not be permitted to cross either?
