Russia travel - possible in winter?
I am planning to ride from Vladivostok to Kazakhstan via Mongolia from December to March. With January being the coldest month... is it practical to travel then?
Thanks in advance Ciao D |
On a motorcycle? I've never heard of anyone doing this, and there is probably a good reason. I'm not sure if it is completely impossible, but the road and weather conditions would probably make it pretty close to it.
Can you provide more experience about what you'll be riding, your experience in riding in cold weather/ice/snow? |
IMHO you'll need a sidecar and/or studded tyres (not sure if they're legal). You should also add serious cold weather kit and/or be prepared to stop and hide when it's that bad.
This little set up works in Norway/Finland in January https://sites.google.com/site/threew...laces/clothing You need serious preparation for this sort of trip, putting new knobblies on a KLR and getting a map at the first service station won't hack it. Andy |
Finland and Norway in January will be like a walk in the park compared to Russia. Here we have the Gulf Stream to keep us warm (relatively speaking!) but further east it has no effect. Statistically Eastern Siberia is among the coldest places on the planet in January, I believe.
So, is it possible: may be, somehow, if you and your vehicle are tough enough (and you´ll need to do very special preparations to even think about it). Is it practical: on a motorcycle - no way, and you will risk freezing at least some of your body parts, if not worse. In any case, it wouldnt fit my idea of ´fun´. |
Look up Dave Barr. It can be done but can you do it?
