Russian Visas for Australians Abroad

Hi all,
We're 2 Australians currently in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and are planning on heading to Russia from Kazakhstan. We have to get our Kazakh visas first, but this question is in regards regards to our Russian visas. There are conflicting stories out there...
First of all, how likely is it that we're going to be able to get our Russian visas while abroad? I've read that maybe it's easier to get a business visa while abroad. Is it a possibility, or is it going to be more doable, posting our passports home, and getting someone to apply in our place in Australia?
Is there any consensus on whether it would be easier to get our Russian visas here in Bishkek, or perhaps applying in Astana, once in Kazakhstan?
Any experience would be gratefully appreciated!
Thanks,
Angus

I think you can get a transit visa(10 days only?) but afaik a full visa needs to be processed back home at an Embassy

I hope I am wrong but that was the reason I got mine before I left

Thanks for the reply mate. It's looking like the transit visa might have to be the avenue we take. Dad's pretty keen to get through Russia pretty quickly, so it might be a bit of a blessing in disguise for him. Shall see how it goes.
