Short on time Help please!!
Hi all,
Myself and a friend are at the beggining of planning a rtw trip, we are short on info. I have looked all over the site but would like some answers to a few questions. we are due to set off around November in 2007 the route is the east coast of Africa to south Africa across to Austrailia ( hopefully by boat, anyone who has travelled with their bike by these means please let me know how you got on) New Zealand by sea or air. fly the bikes to Buenos Aires then travel south to the tip and then back up the west coast to Quito then fly the bikes to Panama from there through the States to Canada and fly the bikes back to the Uk. My questions are; 1. Getting to Egypt is there a ferry from Greece or Turkey? If not, is it possible to travel via Syria, Lebanon, Isreal ect? I know Grant suggests that Egypt is a total nightmare to register the bikes ect but I would really like to visit here has anyone covered this route recently? 2. Visa'a is it possible to sort entry visa's at each boarder crossing or do you have to get these before we leave the Uk? 3. If visa's need to be sorted before we leave the Uk are there companies that will source multi country visa's? If anyone has covered all or part of this route, please get in touch with your experience's and if anyone would like to meet in Somerset or close by to offer advice and tips, I will promise a free lunch and a couple of beers at a fine Somerset pub. Thanks in advance Steve |
1) There are no ferries; you have to go Turkey – Syria – Jordan – Egypt. It’s not a smart move to enter Israel.
2) Visa-situation changes from time to time but is used to be: Syria – Not sure Jordan – Get it before you leave Egypt – On the border (ferry from Jordan) Sudan – In Cairo (might take some time) or get it before you leave Ethiopia – In Sudan I’m not sure about Mozambique but for Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botzwana, Namibia, South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland you can get the visa on the border. Have a nice trip! |

Visas
Hi, get your Syria visa before you go, and ride to Aqaba then get the ferry to Egypt. All the rest are on the border or in the previous capital. I live in Somerset (Long Ashton) and am usually available for beer, and have travelled most of your route. You can call me on 01275 393794

A little common sense is all thats needed to stay out of trouble but you could say that about most countries here. The 'bad things' you hear are typical of mainstream media who're only interested in stuff that sells newspapers. These days Colombia is a lot quieter. |
