should I book ferry from Vladivostok
 

Hi

I shall be in Vladivostok around 15th Aug 2012, my visa runs out 28th Aug 2012.

Should I try and book the ferry from Vlad to south Korea before I leave or is it just a case of turning up and getting on a ferry?

Myself and a friend were in Vladivostok for a month last year and the ferry was always full going to Korea, sometimes they could squeeze in a motorbike and sometimes they had to wait .
The other thing to take into account is Vladivostok is hosting the APEC conference this year , end of August and early september i believe , so accomodation and the ferry will be very busy .

my information may be way out of date by now, we did the route way back in 2007.

but back then the ferry (as in HUGE car ferry, double decked etc)
but then the ferry called at Vladivostok and also Zarubino

we jumped on at Zarubino (much easier than Vlad)

our vehicle was the ONLY one on board, the whole ferry was empty, about 50 passengers all walk ons and then us two with our truck.

i repeat - not another vehicle what so ever !

the ferry makes its money from the movement one way into Russia of the s/hand cars (and some new) from south korea.

Dong Chung ferry stopped about 2 years ago. DBS from Vladivostok is now the only option. Bushman's advice is right - the DBS ferry gets fully booked in June /July / August; I suggest you try and book ASAP. Note the problem is not space for the bike its the berth for you - if you are only one person the chance of being fitted in is better than larger groups. By the way if you haven't checked the price be prepared to be shocked, I know from experience. Last year one person plus bike was around $870.

870 dollars!! Blimey. I am trying to plan a trip to Japan on my bike. One option was to go via Korea. I don't think so. The Sakahlin to Hokkaido ferry finishes before the end of September and I'd have liked to cross after that. :confused1:

if you book your ferry date, would it put you under pressure to get there on time.

According to my new Russia Lonely Planets guidebook DBS ferry is only taking passengers now. The guide is up to date but they could be talking rubbish. Trying to find a way in to Japan myself.
