Definitely going to talk to some more people rather than base decisions on Lois' experience after reading this book!

I do admire any solo female rider especially in the continents she has taken on... she certainly didn't pick the easy ones.

Be careful taking Lois on face-value. My impression is that for her, it isn't an adventure unless it's a hardship. Not suggesting for one minute that she's exaggerating the challenge but simply that she has something to prove (to Vince, maybe?). Only have to read her interview with Boorman in TBM to realise that.

As I said before, I'm no Lois fan although I very much admire her achievements.

Have a read of Pumpy's report on her solo trip through South America: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ave-live-54616

You are not naive, you are only young, ja ja

Hi Nicola, I live in Argentina , I have 35 years of moto in my ass, 20 of them travelling , specially very often in the last 10 in Europe, Africa and of course south america.
You have some very important things, -all you need- as your age, your dreams, and a little piece of madness. ( That is goog ,ja ja )
I think wath is not very important decide now or this year where to go. You must take your moto and ride all that you can in Australia , that will open your mind very much.
Finally, you can do all the destinations !!!!!
Perhaps you should begin by Europe, more easy, less dangerous and very interesting. Then North and South America, finally central america. CA like Africa is really nice, you have very different places, some very goods, some very bads and dangerous. The difference is your experience.
The best, even the only way at last is in your own motobike.
I have a daughter going to Australia for a year in november.
If you come, here in Argentina my wife and me can wait you at home if you want. Sorry my bad english !
Greetings

Hi nicola_a
you're not at all mad & you've joined the right group - welcome!

I would recommend that you attend a HU event. That way you can meet fellow travellers directly - perhaps find a companion to travel with!
Good Luck and I hope you fulfill your travelling dreams.....

Where is your daughter going in Australia, docrafita? Is she on a motorcycle too?

Based on advice from HUBBers etc, I am now leaning towards doing my first long trip in Europe, to build up experience in a safer and more populated environment. There are heaps of places in Europe I want to see, and have only been hesitating due to the expensiveness of Europe. So I'm thinking of getting by accommodation-wise with a combination of Couch Surfing and HelpExchanging (similar to WWOOFing) for 4-5 months from April - August after my winter season in Canada.

I'm planning longer trips on the motorcycle for later this year to build up experience and hopefully will have done Melbourne to Perth (4000kms-ish) by mid next year. I'm not in any rush so am happy to plan and prepare for this slowly and safely!

Thankyou everyone for all your help and advice, and keep it coming!

Nicola
