South America
Any ideas on the cost of a trip from Texas to Ushuaia then fly the bike back from brazil to the UK. I've costed shipping to be about £600 all in each way.
Bike choice - XT660R or Honda Transalp - I favour the second bike due to comfort, is it too big ? I'm not assuming much off road in that part of the world - am I wrong ? Is a Honda dommie better ? Best time of year to leave ? 3 months ample time ? (or enough time to do it as that's all I can take). Help/comments appreciated |
Argentina - Alaska. My daily budget roughly;
$80/day in USA (fill up twice in a day=$50). And that was camping @ about $16-25 per tent. 2.5months in N America. $40/day in Mexico (used mostly hotels, say $15-20/night) 1 month in Mexico $20-30/day South America (Only camped Argentina & Chile, used hotels for the rest, say $10/night) 5 months for S America and 1 month Central America. Obviously cheaper if there's two of you to share a room. My bike shipping (GS1150) totaled about £1,500 there (ship) and back (plane). Crossing Darien Gap on sailboat $550 Only got 3 months? I'd stick with South America. Best time for Ushuaia would be around December. Hope that helps |
Transalp is ideal (not 700) loads of them around (you will have a bit of trouble in the very high mountain passas as it is not injected, down on power thats all...)

M g/f used a KLR 650, also not fuel injected and had no probs at altitude (up to 5,000m) in Bolivia. Yes, the power is down a bit but never caused any probs.

Have a look at this page...
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tst...359.php#002359 ...from my travel blog here on HU. My expenses were very close to MikeS's. Yamaha's are much rarer in Latin America than hondas, for that reason alone, I would go with the transalp. |
Many thanks for the reply. Do any of you think a 650 single is better thn a transalp ?
