From South Amerika to Alaska to Rusia and back to the Netherlands

Hello everybody,

Together with my girlfriend we're planning a trip around the world. We're dreaming and thinking about it for many years and now we decided to just do it. The initial plan is to leave the Netherlands in september, fly to South America and buy 2 motorbikes over there, probably something like the Honda tornado XR250 or the Honda XR400 Falcon. We were thinking to start in Colombia or Chile because we got friends living over there who can maybe help us buy the bikes and get us started. After buying two bikes we want to travel all the way north till Alaska and make the crossing to Russia. From there we we want to cross Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece and so on. I was thinking to do it in 12 months.

For the seasons I was planning to be in Alaska around spring and Russia Mongolia, Kazakhstan Around summer.

The plan is to travel lightweight, we will bring a tent, sleeping gear and some gear to cook. And just the basic stuff you need.

-We traveled before but not like this, is this a realistic plan?
-Any advice for the route?
-Is it possible to buy 2 motorbikes and drive them to Europe? (paper wise)
-What is the best country to start and buy the bikes? (keeping in mind that we got friends in Colombia and Chili)
-Is the jump from Alaska to Russia still possible?
-What will the price be for the 2 bikes? New and secondhand?

If someone got any recommendations, advice, tips or information about everything and anything for this journey we will be happy to hear it.

Thank you for your help

Greetings

South America to Netherlands

Hi Carry,

light weight is always a good idea and the bikes you thinking off are great. You also could get a Suzuki DRZ 400 really good bike too. As far as I know is that the best place to buy and register a bike in your name is Chile. You wont have any dramas there and you can travel anywhere in South and North America.

Not sure about shipping it over to Russia how it works there but I don't think it will be a problem unless you are going into countries where a carnet de passage is required. Also make sure that you match the time right to ship it over to Russia. I think the best place to ship it to will be Vladivostok. And the best time to be there to travel east towards Europe will be end of April early May, otherwise it will be freezing there...

I will ship my own bike to Vladivostok this year and start beginning of May towards Europe via Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and then into Europe via Estonia. Time frame is around 4 month from Vladivostok. When are you planing to leave?

Thank you for the respons, we're planning to start the trip in september 2016. So we have 7 months to travel across south and north America.

And yes we will be around summertime in Russia:)

Hi Carrie,

That sound like a good trip and partly similar to the trip me and girlfriend are planning, except for the Russia part.
Me and my girlfriend are also from Holland (Leiden) and are planning to fly to Chile the end of November this year. Buy 2 bikes, probably new Honda's, and ride to Patagonia. From Patagonia its north north north, till its too cold .. hopefully Alaska or Canada.

Cheers
Capo

Be careful to plan getting into Alberta or BC Canada in the later spring. It can be bitterly cold and lots of snow from late October to end of March or April. There are some massive snow storms in April or May but they are hit and miss and the snow may melt in a few days. Not sure about Alaska but I would guess that it may be the same. I have a garage and a bed usually if passing through west central Alberta.

Thanks for all the great reactions!

We've been looking at the world map and we've came to the conclusion that 1 year might be too short and too cold to do the whole trip. We would like to take it easy!
Our goal is still to drive all the way home and we figured out that it's maybe nice to drive around SA for over 6 month and then fly to South Africa with the bikes and drive home from there. Anyone experience with that?
The only difficulty is that if we buy 2 secondhand Honda XR 400 bikes in Santiago and fly with the bikes after 6 months to Capetown, we need a carnet passage for Africa right? What is the best option if we want to keep the bikes in the Netherlands? As far as I know that's not possible with a carnet passage?

Oh and Capo - maybe we should meet up some day? We're from Utrecht:)

I'd say you need the carnet to go trough Africa and once you're in the Netherlands you need to import the bike to keep it.
Costs involved are:
Taxes (BTW, BPM, invoerrechten(?)) and maybe RDW wants to check it's technical state as well.
I don't know the specifics, but Google is your friend!

Also: go Utrecht!
