Start your SA budget ride in Peru!
HUBBers and dreamers!
One of the side things I like do here in Peru is to offer to buy the best Chinese bikes (they are getting better and better) for riders who want to ride SA in a budget way, change and reenforce a few things to prep them for trips... This is a FREE http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/clap.gifhttp://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/clap.gif service (which means you cover the purchase of the bike up front, costs of paperwork, prepping the bike, etc, but I make no profit on it). I do this so that more budget folks can experience this beautiful country of Peru (that has adopted me) ON A BIKE! Advantages over going it on your own: (1) You won't break down because I've already gone over and bettered certain things. I have many insights on prepping that Chinese bike that will save you ALOT of possible headaches (This is a foto of an on/off road 250cc model I recommend... but there are many others). http://www.aroundtheblockmotoadventu...g?t=1400551935 No worrying about the quality of the machine or waiting 2 weeks before you can start! (2) You will already have a license plate, papers, and insurance (in my name!) to start your journey! The Peruvian police don't care who's name the bike is in (within Peru) as long as you have all the papers and insurance! No worrying about the quality of the machine or how to waste time waiting for paperwork! You just go sign some papers with me here in Huanuco (2 hrs), then you take off and I send the new papers (the ones IN YOUR NAME! http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/deal.gif) to you near the border of your choice! I live in the middle of Peru (Huanuco) so it's easy to ride for an enjoyable two weeks (or more) to any of the 7 border crossings.... (3) FREE route and trip advice AND the best maps (and/or GPS download) about ANYWHERE in Peru http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/mwink.gif you want to go! I'm an American expat, Mechanical Engineer, and motorcycle mechanics teacher of 23 years. I've been living and riding in Peru since age 4 .. (4) If you come back to Peru, I CAN "BUY THE BIKE BACK FROM YOU", by making then make it available to another budget rider.... YES, I will go over it with a fine tooth comb and make it just as good for the next guy/gal rider!:thumbup1: sooo.. It's a cheap way (buy new for $1,200 to $2,000 USD) to hit the ground riding and at the end of your (well advised) trip, and a way you can get the better part of your investment back!! http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/clap.gif pm me here or email me at: aroundtheblock07@gmail.com We'll celebrate the start of your EPIC JOURNEY with (just) a few http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/friday.gif! (the night BEFORE of course http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/lol8.gif). Toby |
sounds really tempting to me! unfortunatly I was thinking of starting in Chile! But I am flexible and maybe could chance my plans :-)
|
I saw this and it certainly sounds like a generous offer. Right now I'm not really in a financial situation where I can take off to S.A. for any length of time, but I am very tempted! :mchappy:

I'm on my own UK registered bike in Peru and I agree it's a stunning country. However, when stopped by the police at their all too frequent checkpoints, their first request has been for my driving licence, followed by registration papers for the bike and SOAT (Insurance). If I've understood you correctly, the driving licence would be in a different name to the registration and SOAT.
|
That's a great idea, got me thinking now for when i come back from Europe and Russia next year. Am i right in saying that you can visit all the countries in SA on this deal or is it limited to a couple of them??
Can you also go to Belize on it? Thanks |
In response to Mike723´s post.
Police don´t care if your driver´s licence is in a different name to the bike´s papers. I´ve been stopped in this situation countless times with no problem at all. The SOAT (insurance) relates to the bike not you. You can also ride on an EU driving licence for 6 months after arrival in Peru. If the police are determined to find an infraction it´s generally only so you pay for their lunch. 10 soles covers pretty much any (real or imagined) traffic offence. Having bought several vehicles in Peru (with a work/residency visa) i would leap at the offer of the original poster. You really don´t want to get involved with the paperwork, trust me. |

Great idea!
Wish I had known about this back in February! Very hard to find out any information about bikes and biking in Peru (didn't know also about HU then!) I bought a Ronco Demolition 250 back then (total cost new was around US$1600) and have been travelling around a bit since then. The paperwork was easy in the end - just had to go to a notary to get my foreign papers "verified" and that was it. Bought SOAT and ready to ride. Had brackets made so I could mount metal panniers (also made locally) for an extra fuel container (not needed yet!!) and tools, etc. and the bike has performed beyond my expectations! Will store it locally till next year when I come back for another 6 months adventure!
|
Hey! You did good. The Demolition is a decent bike (except for the 19" front wheel and the rock hard inverted forks). You didn't mention how you waited out the paperwork for 2 weeks, 'cause they won't give you the plate until 6 days after your get the owners card and you can't ride around without a plate!
Cheers! Toby |
Toby
Do you put a rack and hooped pannier rails on the back of the Chinese 250 enduro's? I would be travelling with soft luggage, something like the Magadans and would need hooped panniers rails to put them on the bike? All the best |

Yes, we have a welding shop. I am not familiar with those specific bags, but if you give me the dimensions, I can make them. The Sumo Torque comes with a wonderful rear rack and good rear peg mounts, so places to secure are already provided. Keep in touch! Toby |
Toby
Thanks for getting back in touch, I am at work abroad at the moment but they would need to be like the ones on my bike at home, they are the Touratec hooped pannier rails. If you need dimensions then I can get you them nearer the time. What are the bikes like for standing on the pegs when off roading http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...ps1121051a.jpg Cheers Wayne |
Wayne,
I just bought 2 more Sumo Torque 250s today for my tours. That's how happy I am with these machines! The pegs are pretty basic, but I've stood on them (230 lbs) ALOT off road and no bending. but for $40 I can get wide cast pegs with 4 rows and adapt them to it. I've put the same on all my Hondas (XR650Ls, NX400s, XR250s) and are very happy with them. Remember that I need a month to: Get the paperwork started (and finished before you get here) Make the adjustments and changes for durability and gearing Build the racks you need (dimensions needed upon ordering) I would build the racks out of 1/2 square profile tubular steel. It is light and strong and the bags sit flat against the supports. I like your bike!! I run the transparent 5.8 gal ACERBIS tanks on my XR650Ls and they are great! Toby |

Hi Toby,
Are you still providing this service in Peru? I have just came across this thread and are looking to get a motorbike when i fly into Lima in the last week of sept. Cheers Andrew |
Quote:
Yes I can. If you get a Sumo Torque 250 or Advance Dakar 250, I will buy it from you at the end of your ride. Remember I need a month to order it in, get the paperwork and plate and bike prepped before you arrive so that you can just take off. Toby |
Hi Toby,
Thanks, i will give you an email. Andrew |
Just emailed your gmail toby.
Thanks |
Hi Toby,
I read your post here as I am in the very early stages of planing our trip around SA. And I would be very interested in talking to you about the service you offer! Although I live in Australia, I am a dual citizen having been born in Argentina. Would this make it easier for me buying a motorcycle in SA and crossing borders? Cheers, Fabrizio |

Hey Toby,
Just sent you an email with a couple of questions. Thanks for being a cool guy and offering to help out like this! Cheers, Klaus |

The shop told me I just needed to carry SOAT and the bill of sale, and if I got stopped to tell them the plate was on the way. Only had minor problems at parking lots where they wanted the plate number for security, but told them I was a gringo waiting for it and waved through! Judging by the mototaxis with "placa en tránsito" on the back I assumed it was all above board! My only complaint about the Demolition is that the supplied off-road tyres are not comfortable on tarmac (very noisy and a bit bumpy), and will be replacing them with "mixtos" (hopefully Pirellis if I can find them) next year. when I return. |
I am glad to see someone offering a service like this. I have been thinking of doing something like it for those traveling from the US into Mexico. I have a wholesale connection to a line of 200cc bikes. I know they are not all out racing bikes, or have all the quality of a $5500 Honda, but for around 1/3 the price, they make for the perfect 'disposable' bike; disposable in that you aren't going to cry giving it to someone wherever you end up, or selling it cheap back to the seller, or selling to a fellow traveller, etc. You can factor in the price as depreciation (like a straight up rental). Any money you get back is like bonus money!!
|
Toby, great to offer your help like this. I sent you an email. Early days but need to start planning!
Cheers, |
... and here is a little database of useful places in Lima like petrol stations and cashpoints etc to help reduce your panic levels :Beach:

I will be arriving in Lima at the Beginning of January and I am very interested in this Motorcycle service. I tried writing a private message to Charapashanperu but i was told I need to make more posts since I am a new member of this forum. What type of information would be required for me a acquire one of your bikes?
|
so, has anyone used this service? it's very interesting, I'd love to hear about your experience.

I was out on a tour and am just now getting to this... I really need about 1 month to purchase the bike from you get it prepped, papered and license plate (unless you buy one of my used ones). Then when you arrive in Peru, we do about 3 hrs of paperwork to transfer it to your name (takes 15 working days), then you can take off immediately (using my papers, etc) on your ride. When the change into your name comes thru, then you can take the bike out of Peru. If you buy one of my bikes, or a new one of the type I use for my tours, (and if you come back to Peru) then I offer to buy it back from you and will pass it on to another traveler! Cheers! Toby |

Andrew and Tamzin are touring Chile right now on a chinese bike I bought for them for the beginning of their journey that started here in Peru. Andrew said it would be fine if anyone wanted to contact him about the experience. I will PM you his email. Also arriving this month is Florian taking one of my slightly used Sumo Torques. Next month Klaus and Ash will be taking to more. Cheers! Toby |
Here is Andrew and Tamzin's blog about their trip in SA on one of my prepped Chinese Sumo Torques.

The dollar is up in Peru and the price in soles has not changed! That means an even cheaper motorcycle for you. Drop me a PM. :thumbup1::thumbup1:

recommendation
I rode with my amigos on a tour with Toby in the fall of 2014. On top of having a great time riding, enjoyed ever every aspect of working with Toby. And I can be a fussy traveler...so that says a lot. He is a stand up guy and really knows motorcycles and Peru (and beyond.)
:innocent: :D :thumbup1:  Currently planning/dreaming about a trip to the center of South America, through the Amazon grasslands, across north then eastern Brazil. Finally coming back through Paraguay, Bolivia and back to Peru. Getting a bike from Toby makes a lot of sense to me and riding a 250 cc to a ripping good time off the tarmac. |

Is there any problems/challenges associate with: a) taking the bike outside of the country b) taking the bike outside of the country and not returning it in the Peru (e.g. storing it for a year in Argentina until my next travel). c) selling the bike outside of Peru (either for parts or whole) d) dumping it in a ditch somewhere (if it brakes down) |
Quote:
No, no problem taking the bike out of the country as it will be in your name. NO problem leaving it in another country (unless you sell it there!). It MAY affect your being able to return to those counties if they keep computer track of those things... or if the TVIP expires while in a country.. I do a BUY BACK if it is a bike I usually use in my Adventure Tours... Toby |

Hi there Toby,
First off it's great that you provide this, sounds super convenient. Do you have a list of some of the bikes, particularity do you have any motorcycles with motors <250cc? Cheers, Krys |
