Suggested route from Italy to England
Hi,
We are reaching the end of our trip  driving our Land Rover from Namibia back to the UK. We are currently near Naples having just got off the ship. Can anyone suggest a good route back over/around the Alps? We have mud terrain tyres but aren't really up for any serious snow. I also understand that tunnels through the Alps can be pricey and cash is running low. Would it be better to head for the south of France? We aren't in a great rush (planning to take about 10 days) and sight seeing isn't that important (we figure we can come back to explore Europe when we have a bit more cash). Any thoughts would be very welcome as to routes, places to stop over or anything else. |
Hey,
We travelled back to the UK from the South of France earlier this year, we went via the 'Route Napoleon' which was fantastic, its a famous biker road that runs from near Nice to Grenoble. We stayed overnight in a fab town called Annecy, near the Swiss border, absolutley gorgeous scenery!! This was where we stayed, they have a deal with a very close underground carpark where we could keep the bike for free!! Htel de Savoie - Un havre de paix et de tranquillit ! Its not the most delux of hotels but was in a excellent location and the free bike parking made up for it!! Also loads of lovely little alpine type villages on the way. We also stayed in small town called Troyes not too far from Paris, lovely little place with secure parking for our bike and very reasonable rates and a great breakfast!! Hotel 2 etoiles Troyes - Hotel Arlequin ** - htel 2 toiles Troyes You can comfortably do the trip from Nice (Italian border is 40 mins away) in 3 days back to the UK, less if you wanted to stop just once :thumbup1: Hope that helps!! |
Also bear in mind that there's no need to worry about snow...since there isn't any!
(The skiing season has been postponed more or less everywhere) No idea about the forecast for the coming days though.. |
Route to UK
How about heading to the North East of Italy to the Julian Alps and coming back via Austria, we crossed the border at Tarvisio then headed to Innsbruck, through Germany, France, Luxembourg etc, really nice roads, easy to avoid all tolls too..

Bit of a detour to come all the way to north-east Italy from Naples if they're heading back to the UK,
Actually it's perfectly possible to drive from Verona straight north over the Brenner Pass than past Innsbruck and into Germany without ever taking a motorway or paying for any tunnels. |
