Suggesting exiting Oz - Where to?
 

Well I'm an Aussie, have been living in Thailand for the past 2 years, have ridden all through Thailand, Laos and also into China.

I am throwing around the idea of doing a RTW trip, and obviously in early stages but here goes.

It has been suggested that starting in your home country is a better idea considering that the bike will be registered to you in that country. Now being an Aussie, and coming from sunny Queensland, this proves a good idea because registration renewal yearly can all be done online without inspections, so I thin that is a win.

The next obvious thing is where to ship the bike to. Now being that I have been in SE Asia for a long time, starting there doesnt really appeal to me, but the USA does.

If I shipped to the west coast, I then have the opportunity to hit Canada, Alaska then all the way down to south America.

Basically I am after some feedback and thoughts to get my juices going.

If anyone has had experience shipping out of Oz to the USA or Canada. Obviously I want to be able to land the bike on another contenint as cheaply as possible.

You could try to send Ivan at Bikes Abroad a mail. He usually replies quickly and can give you quotes for shipping to different destinations. He shipped my bike from Sydney to Valparaiso last year. It took more time than he said and I had to pay a bit on the other side but that was mainly because the chilean custom workers were on strike. 2130 AUSD for Sydney - Valparaiso if I remember correctly. Wouldnt be more to north America I guess....

Do get the seasons right. South for Xmass, north for midyear. :mchappy:

Yeah I looked at some of the shipping prices people have put on here and closest date was still 2 years old, so wasnt sure how much things could have changed.

Consider flying to the USA and buying a bike there, it's too easy to get a bike rego'd in your name, especially in Arizona, took me all of 5 minutes mate! Bikes are cheap and plentiful, no carnet required in all the Americas, no shipping apart form Panama to Cartagena and back, easy to renew your rego online! You'll save a small fortune, a mountain of paperwork, thievery in port charges and red tape, all the running round without wheels not to mention months of time waiting for the bike to rock up hopefully in one piece!

Ride from Alaska to Ushuaia, when you're done sell the bike, then fly to Europe and repeat!

Thanks for the feedback, so being a tourist in the USA theres no issue with registration? I have been in Thailand and it was a massive headache.

My only issue is I guess buying bike and setting it up, but I guess just go to a camping store and buy all the shit you need.

Zero issues, from my experience, I'm also an Ozi. I literally couldn't believe how damn easy it was! Plus with a population of 328 million people, that's over 13 times the population of Oz, 13+ times more bikes right? There are zillions of bikes to choose from, fully set up or otherwise! Internal flights are pretty cheap too, fly buy n ride! I flew all over the shop, Florida, Washington, Iowa where I finally found the bike then rode to Arizona to get it rego'd for $90, cheap as!

Wander into any Walmart store (Take a cut lunch and a GPS, they're k'n ginormous!) and you'll be amazed at the prices of the camping gear, not to mention the amount of it and everything else you could possibly think of! The ease factor would have to rule out the, must have XT660 factor surely? Or surely you could think of another bike to do the trip on? And again, no carnet required for the Americas!

Yeah don't Have to go the 650, could go the 1000cc or a KLX650

It definatley worked for me, you'll need an address ( I have mates there, backpackers address would work though ;-) ) In Arizona they have agencies for the DMV which I used, small office great girls which I tipped because they were awesome, I'd recommend using an agency rather than a DMV office! There are other states that are as easy, cant remember which ones though, just do a search on the AdvRider web page it's really informative and the inmates very helpful!

Each country you'll need to purchase insurance! Shop around it changes a bit from time to time! Insurance companies will sell a policy to a dead rat if they could make a buck on it! In other words it's not that hard, other wise while on the road it can usually be done before, at or just after the border!

I went south, not sure about Canada I'm saving it for my next trip over that way. You'll have to do a bit of homework mate!
