getting back to Dongola and the Nile. You mentioned you followed the Nile?? That meant not taking the ferry at Dongola but rather taking a ferry more north? This avoided some of the real bad sand, from what I heard from Mountain Man, Tom? You remember any of this? |
Hi Allan,
I crossed at Dongola, there is a crossing further North but I couldn't really comment on it. Either crossing you take you will pretty much follow the Nile, just on different sides of the river. Some of the sandier stuff was indeed just North of Dongola but this is where the Chinese had also been at their busiest. When I passed through you could cut past the barriers and ride on asphalt for some sections. I would imagine now that there is a whole load more tarred road to ride on. Our blog from May last year - http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tst...ls/2007_05.php - has a bit more info about riding impressions and might be useful. Scroll down to the 2 May entry. Still in Benin, waited for a new rim to replace the old mutilated one and then made it to the North of the country to be beset by ignition problems. Shipped it back to the coast and then realised what it was. Fixed it up today and ready to go again. Fingers crossed and home in a month now! All the best, Richard |
