Transafrica - Eastern Route

Hi All,
For a long time we have put aside our original plan to travel Cairo to Cape and exchanged it with South America. After a trip to Ethiopia some weeks ago, it seems that the "Africa-Virus" has deeply affected us and we are back on our way to our original plan! ... five months before leaving!
We found some info on the web, but there are still many open questions and, what's more, we need "up to date" info on some important bits and pieces. Maybe, some of you can help:
1) is there a possibility to ship our Land Rover (and us) from Italy, Greece or Turkey to Egypt?
2) visa: how and where do we get visa for Egypt and Sudan (at home or "on the road") and how long is the vaildity?
3) does anybody know about the situation in Egypt and Sudan? ... is it safe to transit to the Wadi Halfa ferry?
4) does the Wadi Halfa ferry still operate? who to contact best for tickets and arragning the Land Rover's shipment?
5) are there any other options to consider concerning the Eastern Route to Africa?
It would be so great to get some more information on those aspects ... All the best from the cold North of Germany,
Mischa (4-wheel-nomads | Overland Travel Blog)

I used them back in May 2013 (Sisa was the cheapest)I was on motorbike returning from Africa trip, very nice, professional,English speaking people, the only bad part is full intensive Inspection, search of your truck and your personal stuff when you arrive in Israel.
You will love Israel(I did).then you cross in Taba to Egypt.
Ferry from Egypt to wadi Halfa, That was a quite extraordinary experience.
If you travel with your adorable children, please pay and get cabin.
When you depart Egypt(Aswan) you can buy both tickets to wadi halfa for your family and your truck.
Over all very happy, nothing was missing from my motorbike,4 day later when cargo ferry arrived.
In Africa,Strongly recommend camping in catholic mission, safe and free.
Costal route(beaches)from Tanzania,Mozambique,amazing beauty.
I would secure visa for Ethiopia, north Sudan in your country.
It's inspiring, amazing, travel with young kids, you are the best parents in THE world!!!!!
Good luck:thumbup1:

Hi,

When I crossed from Sudan into Egypt some 3 months ago, the only way to go was the new road. The ferry is no longer running for cars.
Contact Kamal (Egyptian side) and Mazar (Sudanese side) as fixers:

Hi again,
Thanks for your help and advice so far!
A long time ago, I somewhere read that there is a ferry operating between Saudi Arabia (Jeddah?) and Sudan (Port Sudan?). Unfortunately, I can't figure out where exactly I got that information from. Searching the net has brought no satisfactory answer so far. Can anybody help?

Hi there!

We drove from Belgium to South Africa and we might be able to give you some info :)

1. No idea about the shipping, we drove to Turkey and then took a ferry to Egypt
2. We got a visa for Egypt on the ferry, was valid for 30days I think. Our visa for Sudan we got in Egypt (in Aswan), we had to wait a week and validity is 30days
3. We were a while ago in Egypt and Sudan, so not up to date with safety, but we were in a problem time in Egypt, and we were very safe. They wanted to protect the few tourists they had and they were extremely friendly and we even got some (unnecessairy) police escort on a part of our way. For Sudan, its so safe! As long as you stay in the North :). We took the ferry from Egypt to Sudan, but recently the road has been opened, so no need to take the ferry anymore! (although it's a once in a lifetime thing :) )

Have a look on our website for our stories and we also have a travellerspage on the website Home (left corner you can change the language). Of follow us on facebook! http://www.facebook.com/waarisworteltje Feel free to contact us if you have any more questions.

Watching the problems in Syria and the costs of entering Egypt these days, i would take the west route from Marocco down and ship from Congo to Namibia to avoid the Angola Visa trouble. If you need a guide, im on. Just PN me :)

Trans Africa Eastern Route

Hi Mischa,

We are family from the UK looking to do the same route in September (two kids one and nearly three). We have been trying to work out if it's still possible. I have read on the thread (which I now can't find!) that the ferry from Turkey to Egypt is due to stop in April this year due to the agreement between the two nations ending. There also seems to be a ferry to Israel, but that doesn't seem to be running when you look on their websites.

another thread recently suggested that you can go from Egypt, to Jordan, then Israel, Cyprus then Greece or Turkey. But I cannot seem to work out if it's possible. Things seem to change so quickly that even if there is a way at the moment their might not be in a few months.

The wadi Halfa ferry has stopped now it seems and there is a road route instead.

We are not very organised! So would love to know anything you manage to find out. It there is a way we might also see you down there somewhere.
Best wishes, Libby

Hi guys, it's good to meet you her as well ... there is no ferry to Egypt any more, but there are several cargo-ship possibilities to go from Italy, Greece or Turkey to Egypt. At the moment we are figuring our which one is the best. We are not sure whether it is possible for passengers to also take the same ship. We are awaiting news on that from a German-Egyptian friend of ours ...
What is proven is that the Eastern Route is open (provided you accept to take a cargo ship or try going via Turkey, Iran, Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia to Sudan) ... we definitely will try it!
Let's meet as we are on the same "route" at roughly the same time.
All the best, Mischa (4-wheel-nomads.de)

Is the "ferry to Israel" really a "ferry" (i.e. a ship that will take both the car and the passengers)???
