Travel to Ireland
I am planning a trip this Summer or fall to Ireland and shipping my bike over. I also am planning on staying a while and am bringing my dog with me. Any advice or laws reguarding dogs riding on motorcycles in Ireland (Europe) Here in the US. it seems to be mostly up to the police to get picky and decide to site you. Most police don't mind. Also do motels or Bed and Breakfast mind dogs.
Also any advice on shipping and other details would be great. |
Barney,
I can't see the police here having any problem, so long as you're doing the driving! Have a look here for info about bringing your dog into the country... Bringing pets to Ireland-Information from CitizensInformation.ie Hotels won't generally take in dogs but B&Bs will be a lot more accommodating. Peter |
For the most part I think I well be driving. Thanks for the link on pets. I need to do some checking. What I read before was that all I needed was to have my dog have some blood work and stuff within 4 months of travel. I didn't realize I need to fly on certain airline and passport for pets.

You might think me soft, but I wouldn't take a dog on a bike. if you have an off, it is likely to suffer more injuries than a human because it is less well protected. Even in a sidecar I would have concerns.
I did try to find a seat belt for my Dobermann to no avail because she liked sitting in the front seat of my car. |
If you are travelling on a solo bike you probably will have problems with the Gardai(Irish police) if you have a dog with you.
How do you intend transporting the dog? I have a couple of contacts in the Traffic Corp in Dublin and I work for the road Safety Authority and can check out the legal position. |
I grew up riding with dogs in front of me on the gas tank.(sometimes 3 at a time) Before this dog I had another cocker spaniel that put about 60,000 miles on the bike with me. My current dog Barny another cocker spaniel which I have had for a little over two yrs. has over 26,000 miles on the bike.
As for transport are you talking about getting my dog to Ireland or when I get to Ireland. Cause when I get to Ireland he well be rideing with me. Here in the U.S. the police only tend to harass you because they have nothing else to do. I have not had any problems with the police in fact I have had several ride up and pet my dog and ask questions. For those of you who worry you just wory to much and I wonder how you ride a bike. I had the same questions when I rigged up my bikes to haul my mountain bikes and pull my KLX off road bike with my 1999 Triumph Tiger. My answer is what if I don't crash for years then I would have missed all the enjoyment. |
Take good waterproofs with you. I have NEVER yet had a full day in Ireland when it did not rain. I am sure it happens, but I have not seen it :)
