I made few phonecalles this morning to find out about cargoships crossing the N.-Atlantic ocean and stopping in Iceland. Here is what I found out:

www.atlantsskip.is
This company sailes from Norfolk (USA) to Iceland through out the year. In summer 2002 they will start sailing from Iceland to Rotterdam (Europe). Their english version of the homepage is not so good so you should contact them here in Iceland, +354-520-2040.

www.eimskip.is
This is the dominant cargo company here in Iceland. They sail from USA through out the year (Argentia, shelburne, Boston, Philadelpia, Norfolk). Port in Europe are Fredrikstad (norway), Gothenburg (Swed.), Aarhus (Danm.), Hamburg (Germ.), Rotterdam (Netherl.) and Immingham (Engl.) http://www.eimskip.is/heildaraaetlun.asp

There is another company here in Iceland, Samskip, but Atlantsskip ship their freight to America. I almost forgot there is another, Nesskip, but they don't do us, I mean they only do companies and big stuff.

There is no problem shipping bikes during the winter months, but problem might arise when you want to ride away from the port, slippery roads. Yes, if you are thinking about doing RTW tour and go the northern route, please come in summer time. Winter here in Iceland, along with Norway, Sweden and upper parts of Europe can be quite hairraising on a motorbike (I know what I'm talking about).

Summertime is the best option for N.-Europe trip, plus the Smyril-line (www.smyril-line.com) will make it easy to travel between Fero Islands, Norway, Danmark, England and Iceland.

There are no scheduled trips between Greenland and Iceland, as far as I know.

For now Icelandair is the only company flying from Iceland. Thats why you might see sky-high prices. But you can check out their cargo service on http://www.icelandaircargo.is/cargo or their destinations on
http://www.icelandaircargo.is/cargo/...ault1&pid=1738

Please knok on my door when you come to Iceland. I might even go out riding with you.

Jakob

Jakob

Thanks for getting this information.

I found the contact details for Eimskip - USA on their website (they have offices in Norfolk, Boston and Philadelphia, and a Tollfree number - 1-800-333-2726:
http://www.eimskip.com/samskiptaleid...cid=111&zid=US

Eimskip - Canada - offices in St. John's, Halifax, Montreal and Toronto, including phone, fax and e-mail addresses:
http://www.eimskip.com/samskiptaleid...cid=111&zid=CA

On the Atlantsskip site, I found the address of their Norfolk terminal, which is run by Transatlantic Lines:
http://www.atlantsskip.is/id/1000074

I called the phone number listed, and the very helpful gentlemen referred me for shipping inquiries to their agents:

Bobby Parker or Denny Parker (father and son)
Hasler's Group
1-757-625-3641

So, Jakob, you might find quite a few travellers on your doorstep this summer! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Cheers
Susan
