Trip to Spain, March-April 2020

Hi all,

I'm in the very early stages of planning a trip to Spain next year after being given the green light by my better half.

I'll be riding my Triumph Street Triple from the Southwest of the UK and planning to head over via Portsmouth/Bilbao ferry although I am yet to book anything.

Beyond that I have approx 2 weeks and only a couple of places I plan to visit. Those being the Aquaduct at Segovia, and friends in the South of Spain near the border with Portgual.

Is there any must sees or recommendations prior to going?

I have done bike tours before and have visited a few countries in western europe but have only visited Spain once before.

Advice on ability of wild camping or cheap campsites welcome along with route advice or general travel advice for Spain.

Thanks in advance
Tom

Spain

If you can do it the N260 through the Spanish Pyrenees is an awesome ride, we did Andorra to Pamplona in a day:thumbup1:

... also forgot to add from Ponte de Barca (Portugal) to Celanova (Spain) on the N304-1 and OU540 is another excellent ride through some amazing countryside

Santander is an easier crossing. Bilbao has poor road connections and you tend to be forced to use the pay motorway to make progress away from the city.

Mérida also has a pile of Roman remains including the theatre and aquaduct, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9rida,_Spain

Sevilla is another place well worth visiting.

When travelling through Spain I tend to stop at roadside hostels which are found on the side of motorways and main roads in a 'via de servicio'. Typically €40 for an ensuite and €10-12 for menu del día with wine or beer.

Picos de Europa is definitely worth riding through! :thumbup1:

The ferries fill up quickly and the prices go up so book as early possible.
We usually camp when we’re there but the campsites are not cheap like France and they’re not as plentiful - I’m not sure if wild camping is legal or not.
There are so many great places to visit and roads to ride, it may be best if you came up with a rough itinerary then asked what is good to see in that area.
Imagine if someone said what’s the best places to go in UK - too many answers and Spain is a bigger country.
Contact Simon100 on this forum, he is the font of all knowledge when it comes to Spain and a nice guy to boot.
Enjoy.

Hi Tom

Its difficult to recommend somewhere when you have not staed what your interests are.

If you like history, castles etc. then in the North and West the cites of Burgos, Leon, Avila, Salamanca and in the South Grananda, Toledo, and Sevilla are all worth visiting.

You might want to do a search on Youtube for a guy who has the odd name "Teapotone" who did an RTW trip on a Gixer and who is now running short trips to Northern Spain. He has posted a few videos of riding in the Picos on his channel that might be of interest to you.

Good luck with your trip.

Good advice - I have been trying to book the end of March / early April on the Brittany ferries website and have found a lot of the crossings are already full for motorcycles. Apparently they only have a fixed number of places for motorcycles on each crossing. Also the ones that were available for motorcycles had no 2 berth cabins left and was being quoted more for a cabin than the actual crossing!!

If you haven’t already booked I would recommend doing it ASAP.
