Turkey to Sudan
I am planning a motorcycle ride from UK to Sudan early next year.
I can think of going through Iran or shipping from Turkey direct to Sudan. Has anyone got any feedback on my two options or more ideas or different routes on how to get from Turkey to Sudan overland? Thanks |
Hello,
funny that I came exactly to your personal thread. I have indeed precisely the problem, that I'm stuck here in Erzurum. And do not get ahead of my actual target Sudan. Unfortunately too many problme are there, which make me difficult drive a head with my Suzuki DR650. Have you got already what brought out? regards joe |
Middle of 2014 I air shipped my bike from Sudan to the UK using Turkish airlines.
It did not cost too much. I want to ride from UK to Turkey (that should be the easy part) then ride from Turkey to Sudan (cant figure this bit yet) and later next year hoping to go to Ethiopia, Kenya, and possibly down to South Africa. I will try very hard to avoid air/sea ship my bike, but most of the Middle East is unsafe or difficult to get through riding your bike. I am sure it would be easy to air ship a bike from Turkey to Sudan but I am reluctant to do that. Any ideas or suggestions please? |
What did you paid, at that time for the transportation with Turkish Airways?
Because I have seen now here in Turkey, that the route Iran, UAE and KSA is too difficult. I would now shipping my bike from the Turkey / Greece to Egyt / Port Sudan. But unfortunately I do not have a carnet. that is of course with Egypt then difficult. What you imagined that? |
Ship Turkey to Israel, ride thru Jordan and Saudi, then ferry to Sudan maybe an option?
(we drove our truck the other way round, Sudan, Saudi, Jordan, Israel, ship to Greece) |

For Egypt I heard it many times that you must have a carnet. I really did not fancy going through Egypt at that time. For Sudan I think you can pay a fee to enter using Document No. 25 but will need to get that confirmed. |

Last time I checked with the Saudi embassy in Khartoum they said NO bikes are allowed and was clearly marked on the notice board outside the embassy. |
unfortunately right.
I have met here today in Erzurum biker from Australia, which have confirmed to me just that. That by bike through KSA no longer works. who said exactly the same, that was extra notice. Quote:
Egyt without carnet is so impossible? |
I did not have a carnet for Egypt and thought there was nothing worth seeing there weighing in the hassle, corruption, bureaucracy and the very expensive carnet.
For me I think visiting Egypt is best done by going through the airport. On the other hand I met people who said that they paid a security deposit instead of the carnet at point of entry and collected it back at point of exit. |
all I was able to find so far with carnet to Egypt, do not make me very hopeful. Either way, even if you have a carnet, will cost the whole procedure in Alexandria probably always min. 500€
Has someone made in the last few days experience with that? Specially with an motorcycle ? |
