U.K. to Cape Town, time wise ?
Hello fellow travelers,
; My son-in-law & nephew in one Toyota 4x4, myself and wife in a second Toyota 4x4. (reason is only 1 Toyota will be coming back) Q1. What route is the quickest, and how long should that take? Q2. How long would it take if we driven for say 4 hours a day. Q3. Is there a good time of year to set off from UK? Q4. Which route is generally considered to be the most intersting, Q5. If you had to just take your time, how long would you give yourselves? Answers please |

Q1 I would say the Eastern route is Quickest. We drove from JHB to Nairobi in 4 days.... the roads are a bit shoddy in Kenya..actually shocking. The worst of everywhere!!!! Some roads cant be rushed. and some parts cant be either. IE desert. I suggest you read a trip report or 2 from africa-overland.net
Q2 4 hours a day on what roads...if u drive 4 hours and only get 100km's it could take a very long time. I think rather work on City to City. And what u want to see in between. No point in going to Tanzania and not seeing the crater and kilimanjaro. Q3 We set of from UK july, we missed rainy seasons most of the time on the eastern route. Although it rains all the time uganda. Q4 Route...what do u want to see? West has Cameroon with no roads and mud up to your windows. if its adventure go west, if its more sight seeing and "easier" roads the east. Both have merits that warrant going through them. Personally i would i love to do west. Hase desert and jungle. East has desert and savanna unless u go into Uganda rwanda etc. Q5 6 months again it depends how far of the path u want to go. |
Thank you Surfer for some interesting replies.
As this will be the first time into Africa, I think I will stick to the Eastern side, as it looks a little easier. Is the time scale the same for bikes as it is for 4x4's or would you say you could cover more distance daily in a 4x4 or on a bike ? So it is looking like a run down to Istanbul, then Egypt or Saudi side of the Red Sea ? Quite like the idea of passing Mecca ? Next stop Nairobi, then S.A. ? Opinions please anyone |
Does it really take 95 days to drive to C.T. from U.K. ?
It seems an awfull long time. I thought it could be done in say, 5 ~ 6 weeks. No serious detours, just heading down, to C.T. |
