We would probably return home, then join the bikes later in the year to start for Australia. Anyone any thoughts on this?
At the moment we ride Triumph Tiger 1050 and 650 V-strom, but plan to take 250s, possibly Hondas, easier to pick up when you drop them.

Sure, anything is possible, if you just have the time, and the money. But to avoid Iran/Pakistan, you first do a full trans-Africa?? I think that has to be a world record for a detour..!!!
First of all, getting into eastern part of Northern Africa does not seem to be in any way easy these days, the overland-route from Turkey is definitely cut off because of Syria. Egypt is not without problems either. In fact the problems with Iran or Pakistan from an overlander´s point of view do seem quite a bit smaller (unless of course they won´t issue you a visa – THAT would naturally be a showstopper).
Besides, shipping across oceans always costs money, and is almost always some sort of PIA (and I would advice against sending vehicles to India by sea... even by air it could easily turn out to be an unforgettable experience, and not totally a positive one!)
BTW, you wouldn´t need a 250cc enduro to go Turkey-Iran-Pakistan-India, there are paved highways all the way, even though the roads are not always as silky smooth as in Europe. Only if you plan to do the backroads a lot, then it could be different, but main roads are just fine.
