Hi Graham, If you want to get directly there just get off the boat in Stavanger and follow the signs for Sandnes/Oslo on the E39. You could then pick up the 45 which follows a lovely valley to Svartevatn. Then climb up over the top and down to meet the 9 (It doesn't open until May). This is a really nice ride. From there go north until you pick up the 45 again for Dalen. This will bring you to the E134 and it takes you to Oslo. If you decide to go the southern coastal route staying on the E39, don't miss going up the 41 to Kviteseid to meet up with the E134. This is another great road. I used to use it when the ferry went to Kristiansand. A truely beautiful country, I wish I was there.

Hi Doc'

Well, you certainly seem to know your way around !

So there are 2 predomenent routes?
One is the E39, which is a more direct route?
And there is the scenic route ?

I forgot to mention, I am in a Toyota LC3.

Is it an easy ferry option from Newcastle, or is there another ferry you could suggest?

I might have a caravan "in-tow" so may have to stick some what to the coastal "easy" route.

Hi Graham, I assumed you were on a bike, I forget sometimes we're open to all. Some of the hairpins on the rooads up to the plateaus are epic but they get coaches up them so not a problem really except for fuel economy! I'd take the southern route and then take the 41. The road is not too narrow, you may have to slow when passing a large wagon though. If you'd prefer motorway all the way just stay on the 39. Remember to keep to the speed limits, on the button, even a few k's will be expensive. There aren't many speed cameras but the police make up for it!

Hi Doc,
I have just come back after a 2 day visit over there,
Motorway speed limits 90 km?h, just like a crawl !

Very Very expensive,

If it wasn't for a good job offer, then no one from the UK could really afford to live there.

Thanks for all the advice, i may just stick to the E39, until I can explore without the caravan.

Go thru Denmark

Just a thought but if you for some reason, you can't get on the ferry to Stavanger or you just fancy a change, try the ferry to Esbjerg, drive up through Denmark to Frederikshavn, then catch the ferry there to Oslo.

I checked prices a while ago for bike and rider and they were about the same but with the ferry to Oslo to add on, which for a bike was pretty reasonable (£13 I think).

I'm going to Norway in July and will probably go Harwich - Hoek van Holland as it's much cheaper, then take a couple of days to ride up through Germany to the Danish west coast, then the Oslo ferry.

Hi Indoors,

never thought of that.

That sounds a good alternative route.
Both of them.
Graham
