UK to the very top of Norway
Planning a trip to Nord Kapp and Lofoten Islands from the UK in July/August (3 weeks). Has nybody got any information or recommendations regarding basic accommodation or camping and the availability of fuel in northern Norway?
|
have you seen this?

Thanks Andy, I'd not seen that as a matter of fact. Looks great but I prefer a solo/small group experience rather than a mass orgy [erm I can't believe I said that!!]

Hi, I'm off to Nord Kapp in a few weeks time, a mate went there a couple of years back and said that it's a bit like Landsend in so much as it's touristy and you have to pay, as that's the case I would think fuel is no problem, he certainly didn't tell me of any problems. Chris

Hi,
Rode my elfant up to nordkapp last year then onto murmansk, russia then down through lapland & sweden. Fuel is easy to get though can be a little expensive. You can camp on the side of the road or just about anywhere, no problem Grant |
Sorted. Cheer folks!

One further recommendation. On Lofoten, right at the south I think, A (with an 'o' over top of the A) is a fishing museum that has hostel accommodation within. Reasonable prices. Best place, virtually bar none, that we've stopped. Once the daytrippers go you have an idylic spot to yourself (and hostel guests). If you do run short of time DO NOT mis Lofoten - it is the best, scenery wise ! Hutte on campsites(excuse spelling) are very good - especially if 4 or 6 can share, then they are less than camping. It's a long road to travel - but easily worth it. If time an issue use the Hurtigruten (apologies for spelling again) for part of return trip. Expensive, not fast, but a different view unfolds without needing to glance at the road !! And it just keeps rolling apart from ports of call (doss in bar - cabins £75 P/P P/N !!) Hope you get the weather we did ! PS : We're from N Yorks, if you want any further info let me know [This message has been edited by Fritz (edited 16 May 2002).] |
Jim,
I would be very interested in your findings - was planning to go next year and am concerned about accomodation costs. Plan to go 2 up on an 1150GS and would ideally like to leave tents et al at home. Could you email me any interesting findings - my trip sounds like very similar in duration etc. Many thanks and have a good one d.shannon@virgin.net |
In case you're still wondering: Fuel and accomodation is no problem in Northern Norway. Plenty of gas stations and camp sites all over, even if scarcely populated in the northernmost county, Finnmark. I should know. I`m born and have lived up there for many years.
If you want accomodation rather inexpensive (in Norwegian terms) without a tent, you should use the Youth Hostels, which is found all over Norway. Check out the site www.vandrerhjem.no. It is in Norwegian only, unfortunately, but click on the bar that says "Vandrerhjem i Norge" in the upper left corner. You'll get a map where you can click on the different parts of Norway, then on to the different hostels. This site also quote the prices on all hostels, and tells you how far it is to the next hostel when travelling north- or southbound. You'll find all necessary contact information, and can book on-line. Price example on youth hostel in Lakselv, which is approx. 2-3 hours driving distance from Nordkapp: Per person: 150 NOK (18-20 USD) 50 NOK (7-8 USD) for breakfast. Free access to canoes, boats, fishing equipment, saunas etc. Sorry for this rather lengthy post. Hope it is useful. |
Thanks Indu and everyone else who's posted info for me to examine. All very useful.
Nord Kapp here I come! Jim |
BTW: The hostel site is in English as well. Sorry. Didn't see it at first...
Best regards Indu |
General prices for a room, (May 2008) are around NOK800 o NOK1300.
These are not expensive in Norwegian terms. |
there is a basic motel, 8km north of bergen, called bergen camping I believe.
good showers, basic, but on £25 per night |

Erm, probably a bit late, that's a six-year-old thread you're responding to.:)
But yes, please post your experiences as it will help others (and it's on my to-do list). Tim |
