Venezuela actual situation?

Hi Folks,
you know how it is on a long travel-If you´re asking the local people about the situation in the next country/state you are going to-the answer is always: "It´s very dangerous there"
From Venezuela I heared different stories-but I´m pretty sure I will go there but if anybody has some infos or recent experiences-please post.

I think the situation generally had been changed in the last few years/month-so primary I´m not interested any antigue stories ...in the 70ties:palm: everything was fine...:wheelchair:

See Igor's thread on ADV rider. One of the best. He spent a couple week in Venezuela. Good report, highly recommended. Pick up Venezuela on about page 24:

the most importent thing is to stock up on cash before you go as the black market gives about 50% more than the banks. i was there about 3 weeks ago and every day i would meet someone who would tell me that i was going to get killed there .it is a dangerous place at the moment. i would stay away from caracas for shore i met a few people who had witnesed shooting while they were there. i think just be carfull and lucky and you should be ok .i had no problems apart from paying twice as much for water than petrol .

I'm headed into Venezuela from the other direction in a few weeks if my bike keeps going where I point it. I've heard only good stuff from people who've actually been there....except for some disgruntled businessmen, who don't seem to care for Chavez for some reason. I won't be going to Caracas, which does sound like a genuine hellhole.

Now Guyana on the other hand.....I haven't heard anything nice about that country at all. The few people I've met who've been there say things like "That's the worst place on the entire planet." But I'm going there, too.

Hope that helps. Maybe see you on the road in a couple of weeks.

This made me laugh out loud. I've heard so many horror stories about Georgetown from both motorcyclists and others that I'd almost lost track of the fact that there are bound to be other perspectives. Thanks for the slap upside the head.

I should enter Suriname in two days, all things being equal. I think it's Saturday, so probably Monday afternoon. I'll gladly buy (the first) beer, coffee, or other adult beverage. I don't carry a phone, so email is probably the safest bet for rreaching me: markharf (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Ate mais tarde! Or was that a bientot...or what?
