Visemar Ferry (venice - Alexandria)

We are taking the ferry on the 22nd June to start our trip down to cape town and I was wondering if there is anything anyone can tell us about it?any extra costs or things to look out for!

Went in November last year the same route.
What You will be needing is cash money for food on the ferry (Euros I think).
I also recommend something to read, can be a bit dull otherwise.

When we arrived at the port of Alex, we had to buy a fire extinguisher to be allowed into the country. This may have changed :p

Hi Jim, I have heard you can buy some form of cost saving prepaid meal voucher on the ship, which covers everything including tea & coffee. Details on what is on board the ship are quite sketchy.

We set off on the 16th July a little after you, we may catch up at some point if we do give us a wave.

Have a safe trip Dave.

We took the ferry from Alex to Venice a little while ago. The boat is very new and comfortable and the crew are friendly.

You have to pay for food and drinks in Euros. You can pre pay for all your meals with the voucher and it saves you money. There's not so much choice with the food though, so if for example you're vegetarian it works out better just to pay for what you want to eat meal by meal.

The food wasn't too expensive, but if you want to save more cash you can also take your own. We had our own breakfast and lunch and paid for a hot meal for dinner. They allowed access to the vehicles during daylight hours, so we could keep going out to the truck and getting things we needed.

They have tv, but I think the only English language channels are news. They also have a dvd player and a small selection of films, but I'm sure if you took your own dvds it would be fine to put them on.

Visemar Ferry

We had planned the same trip but now that the ferry service has been suspended we are somehow stuck. To be honest I don't have an alternative idea how to get to Egypt which I don't want to miss. In fact, it almost forces overlanders to choose a different route altogether. The Western Africa route is a totally different trip in every respect and is not really an alternative.
Perhaps somebody out there knows how to get to Egypt overland without the "downstream" problems when you have been to Israel en route. Would love to hear from you.

I have same problem -planning to go from Europe to East Africa on my motorbike in October. Right now I'm, looking for the possibilities to fly out of Istanbul to Cairo shipping the bike, either but ship or plan.
Seems to be the only way as things are right now. But who knows? Events the Middle east or Libya could change rapidly.

Venice-Alex ferry alternative

Hi Folks,

The Visemar ferry has been cancelled until October. There is an alternative roro service or you could ship from Rotterdam. Check out Emma's latest post on the thread here:-

Last time I looked you didn't have to go into Israel. Syria, Jordan to Aqaba then ferry to Egypt waving at Isreal as you sail past. Word of advice, get the fast ferry. Ride safe.

Hi Omar Mansur,
Visemar quote all there is to know on their website. Syria would seem to be a risk right now, the rest of your suggestion is probably a managable route. I keep on looking; also at Grimaldi 'gfc@grimaldi.napoli.it' but they have not replied to my enquiry.

Cairo

THIS FERRY HAS DRIVEN US CRAZY!

Anyway, we have now flown the bikes from london to Cairo. This is a serious shame as it means we are missing out on some great driving through Europe and we are not actually doing England to Cape town anymore but Cairo to Cape Town....!It has also been nearly double the cost!which for two students on a serious budget is NOT good!

We are heading out tomorrow to Cairo to meet the bikes and start the battle with customs to get them!Anyway let me know if you are around there!

Jim
