Laos / Cambodia border on Vietnamese bike
Hey guys,
We are about to buy some Wins in Hanoi and hopefully cross into Laos soon. We left our Australian bikes in Phnom Penh due to the Vietnam issue and are hoping to ride our new vietnamese plated bikes into Laos then back into Cambodia to pick up our CT110s. We've heard there can be issues/flat out refusals to allow Vietnamese plated bikes ridden by foreigners into Cambodia through the only Laos/Cambo crossing. Apparently it is just a big scam to get you to sell your bike for next to nothing at the border. Apparently they insist you need a carnet. Anyone have any further info on this? Will we need to cross back into Thailand and then into Cambo? Cheers |
I researched the same bordercrossing from Laos and into Cambodia (theres only one border crossing between those countries) at the end of 2014/ beginning of 2015. I was then on an european plated bike that I owned myself. I found out then that several bikes had been denied crossing this border. Thai plated bikes owned by foreigners living in Thailand, european owned bikes on european plated etc. So I simply didnt try that option. Sfter riding through Laos from north to south I went into Thailand and entered Cambodia from Surin province in Thailand at the O'Smack border crossing.
I didnt hear anything about that borderstaff demanded Carnets or money. In fact a guy I spoke to said he tried to bribe the borderstaff but without "success". He was norwegian as I am and was riding his own thai plated bike. So it might still be a problem to cross that border but as I said I have never heard about questiones about carnets etc. Anyhow - its not s big deal turn to turn around and go via Thailand. (Well - there might be an issue with vietnam bikes in Thailand....not sure about that) Or you could simply ride into Cambodia first and then cross into Laos from Cambodia. There shouldnt be any issues if you travel that way. Its just the opposite way it have been reported problems. Try to ask around on other forums: Rideasia.net or GTriders.com |
