Laos into Cambodia border
Hi,
Anybody thinking that they can cross this border must think again, the guy in charge on the Cambodian side would not let his own mother through so we overlanders have no chance unless you have a big wedge of cash to give him. I have written to the Cambodian under minister of state to complain about him (giving his name and number) but I don't think it has helped much. Anyway good luck to anybody that fancies the 3 hour trip from Paksi to the border and 3 hours back. I hope this helps with your planning Dave Plodd - A Trip of a Lifetime Overlanders - Stellplatz stop over and tour Pattaya, Thailand |
Thanks for the tip.
Was there a particular reason given for the non-entry? |
Its been like that for quite a while. I travelled Laos from north to south in the beginning og 2015 and my intention was to cross directly over from Laos to Cambodia, but I heard so many stories of travellers who had been denied crossing there and I actually spoke to two different ones and both was denied entry so I chose to not even try. I crossed over to Thailand and rode to Surin province in Thailand and crossed over to Cambodia there.
Its a real PITA as nowadays your hardly allowed to cross Thailand more than once, if youre really lucky twice, but trice would never happen as the rules snd regulations are nowadays. So an overlander coming from Myanmar, crossing over to Laos and then wanting to cross into Cambodia one will have to go through Thailand again and then into Cambodia. And he/she would have to cross Thailand a third time to continue to Malaysia. And that is totally impossible nowadays. Crossing the opposite direction didnt use to be any problem and hopefully still is posible. |
Good to hear that, so at the moment its best to cross from cambodia to laos, if you want to travel both countries?

No way through
Hi Bikermarvin,
No it is not possible to cross in either direction without a handful of money and hours in the capital arranging the paper work first. Dave Plodd - A Trip of a Lifetime Overlanders - Stellplatz stop over and tour Pattaya, Thailand |
Yes official people in Laos and Cambodia are very keen on money. They also refused us to cross with a vietnam registered bike.
With a bribe of 20 Dollars i could finally cross after selling the bike: http://schoene-motorradreisen.de/?re...s_thakaek_loop |
Gents, thought i should post a quick update on the Laos / Cambodia border crossing at Stung Treng. I crossed here yesterday 31/12/16 with no problems at all. I am an Australian riding a Dubai registered R1200GS. I needed a carnet and a few coins but that was all. My advice -
Have a carnet for foreign registered bike, Have some small note US dollars. All up cost was US$8 for 4 x $2 stamps, Pay the gratuity and don't argue, Don't be arrogant. Safe travels .... cheers |

The problem havent been about a little tea-money afaik but about that border staff demanded a permit from official authorities in Phnom Penh. (Travelling from Laos to Cambo) But it would be great off course if this border at least would be passable for overlanders. There are certainly a lot of obstacles in SEAsia nowadays. And thanks for sharing your experience by the way...:thumbup1: |

I am currently evaluating if it's worth to cross Thailand with a guide from Myanmar to either Laos or Cambodia. As I will have to get my german registered bike home I will probably have to ship my bike out of Cambodia or possibly Vietnam (which is not really leagal to enter ) to europe or Malaysia.
Therefore it is very important to know if there is a high chance to be allowed to cross the border from Laos into Cambodia. Would love to hear some reports from people who did it and how they did it. Gesendet von meinem ONE A2003 mit Tapatalk |
Crossing Laos to Cambodia
Hi
We crossed from Laos to Cambodia last Sunday with no problem at all. We have a carnet, they asked for it and filled it in correctly. We paid 1USD each for a medical quarantine certificate, we had to pay 35USD each for visa on arrival, fill out the customs form and went through. Laos charged us 2USD each for overtime as it was a Sunday. We are fairly sure we will not be able to get a permit for Thailand so have approached a shipping agent. If you want his contact details, send me an email sue@nworth.co.uk Two couples we know also crossed that border from Laos into Cambodia, in December. Safe travels Sue |

Laos to Cambodia
We are in a UK registered Toyota car, the others we know are in Spanish and German registered cars and both have carnets. We were all asked for them at the border.

If people are looking for a way to cross this border with a bike they have bought in Southeast Asia, then this may be an option...

We are headed to Vietnam in January, buy a little bike, and would like to loop through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Is this possible at all now?
|

If so then you need to wait and check again later in the year because rule and regulation could and will change between now and then? Today yes if you buy a Vietnam 125cc bike you should have no problems getting into all the country you mention. |
hi,
this week i will depart from Kunming, China to Sihanoukville, Cambodia. I will go via Laos. My bike is a chinese registered F800GS. i'm just wondering, there are several different carnet de passage which are issued by different organizations. So which one is valid in Cambodia I will probably pass Laos and Cambodia border by next Monday. so if this week anybody en the route from Luang Prabang to the southern Laos, let me know, we could team up. |
Hi Fons
For your Chinese plated motorbike, you DONT need a Carnet to cross over Mohan/Boten border crossing as for Cambodia I have never done this crossing so I can't advise you. And please be advised from the turn off to Jinghong all the way to the border of Mohan about 120km this whole road is under construction and may be difficult and may courses you a delay. |
hi,
1, yes, for my moto, i dont need any extra paper to enter Laos via Mohan border crossing. 2, my friend confirmed me that the road from Jinghong to the border is completely upgraded. it's 4 lane broad highway. it should be less than 2.5h for this 180km stage. 3, also border checkpoint now works until 21:30 both sides. but Laos doesn't issue VOA after 17:30. now i'm on my flight to Kunming to pickup my moto. shipped out from shanghai to Kunming by truck last week. costs 700 rmb +300rmb insurance. Nice. |
Hi Fons
Is the Chineses plated bike in your name? or have you got a letter authority to leave China on the bike.? |
Oh yea, it is my name.. registered in Shanghai
|
Great NEWS Fons all good to go I have done the border crossing with a Chinese plated bike over 10 times now with no problems.
Here is a link to a friends RR with good details on the border crossing layout. Link.... Ningbo Zhejiang to Chiang Rai Thailand January 2015 to March 2015 - return |
unfortunatelly, the road project from Jinghong to the border is not finished yet. 190km takes 2.5h. i think they must finish it this year. then it will be the 4 lanes motorway all the way from kunming to the border.
enter Laos is really easy except the Laotien border officer try to squeeze 20k kip out of your pocket. i asked him what is for. he explaint me it's for filling the arrival card. so we just wrote it by ourselves. save 40k kip. but most of people dont bother it. just pay and go. for motorbike, you have to pay 30k kip to the Laotien customs. the route n.13 from border to Luang Prabang is in good shape. 290km. i will suggest to cross the border in the late afternoon or night. the border closed at 9pm. you could leave Kunming in the morning and arrive at the border by 7-8pm . so after you enter Laos, you could choose to stay in Nateuy. Then next day, go to Luang Prabang. |
Hi Fons

If it becomes a TOLL motorway then no good for motorbikes? Because it could be just 1 more road we can't ride on. |
in.yunnan, you could ride moto on motorway.

Hi, Which border was it? |
Quote:
It has been a "difficult" bordercrossing for a long time. All kinds of excuses has been made by the borderstaff to not let people theough and bribes and "tea money" has been the rule and not the exception. It was also just recently some trouble between the two nations and some dispute over something and the border was closed because of that. You should check local media before counting on that border. |
we crossed this border a week ago on four European motorbikes with carnets.
make sure you have the green temporary import paper from entering Laos. we didn't get one when we entered from China and had some discussions until they let us go out. on the Cambodian side it was like this: medical survey and temperature check (1-2$, can't remember) on the booth outside, carnet at the customs in left building (2nd office) and 35$ for the visa on arrival (they only wanted one photo instead of two). I heard from two other tourist bikers with local motorbikes (Vietnamese and Laos number plates), that Laos didn't even let them out. so I've been a bit nervous but it went well. |
Laos Cambodia border: Carnet not accepted anymore
Just tried to cross the border from Laos to Cambodia with our Landcruiser.
They didn't let us in, first I have to go from Laos by bus to PhnomPhen en apply for a Temporary Import permision. With that document I have to show up at the border again. The custom guy had since 2 months orders not to accept the carnet de passage anymore, only the TIP from central office in PP. It was n"t possible to turn him over, we argued a lot but no result. We are now back in Pakse to overlook our options. There is going a direkt bus to PhnomPhen. Or better try to enter Thailand? |
bummer :(
was it the Cambodian border who didn't let you in? or was it the Laos customs which didn't let you even out? because I heard that a lot that they don't let you out of Laos at this border. I would try at another day, like Sunday. then there will be a another guy who may not know the rule and just let you pass. I don't think you will get into Thailand at Pakse, seems to be a big border crossing. |

We did not have carnets, but we did have the original registration cards. We were there only a month after you. I'm glad we went that way, and not Laos to Cambodia! cheers |
Cambodia > Laos 2019 Experience
Hello
Just thought I would add my recent experience of this border. It went very smoothly considering I didn't have a temporary permit for Cambodia https://www.globaltimoto.com/asia/ca...ehicle-permit/ And the Laos side accepted a Carnet no issues at all: https://www.globaltimoto.com/asia/la...et-de-passage/ |

Ah, that’s something I forgot to mention in my post.
The Cambodian customs officer asked me if I would come back to Cambodia, I said yes. He then asked if I would return through this same border control, again I responded with a yes. He then asked me several times throughout our conversation when I would return, to which I responded 6-8 weeks. As he was writing out my zero day TIP he said that he would make another one for me when I return. I’m guessing he is way more interested in getting the $10 again than turning me away for not having the permit from the PP office. My assessment of the situation is that most of these guys will use the blocker to build up a story against giving permission, but are just judging whether you will go for a “surcharge” and how much for. If I didn’t give them the notion I’d go for it then they wouldn’t give me the option. |
I plan to cross the border from Cambodia to Laos and after a few days in Laos go back to Cambodia again in the end of this year. The motorcycle will be a Cambodian BMW 650 rental bike. I hope the border crossing´s will be without problem. :-)

Hey Hadj
Nice bike. I'm currently investigating this crossing, as they are supposed to have changed the rules on the Cambodia side, to make it easier for foreigners to enter. Are you already in Cambodia ? Did they give you any documentation ? Thanks Tim |
Hey Folks,
do you have any new information regarding this bordercrossing? We are a group of three and will probably cross this border around december this year. We will have bikes with a german license plate. I'm very happy for any info you can give me :thumbup1: Best regards Louis |

Laos to Cambodia - problems for a long time. But it seems it might be a change over there lately. Take a look in this facebook-group and see how it has been described lately on a couple of occasiones. And note that there is a document from the Cambodian Tourist Dept that can be great to have... https://www.facebook.com/groups/4191...147/?ref=share |
Hey Snakeboy,
thank you for your help! I will check the group out and take a look what i can find there :) Have a nice weekend |
