Laos to Kazakhstan/Mongolia.Motorbikes-June 2017

Hello, looking for possibility to share cost to cross with motorcycles.(1 bike for me)this is a Different thread from the previous for cars only
We were there (Laos/China/Tibet border) last year and do have contacts for a reasonable quote from agency.depending on number of bikes/days/route.
surely isn't the same to reach Mongolia or Kazakhstan!
I live and currently I am in Thailand.get in touch if interested .
Sergio

Just an update on my movements I leave CR Thailand on the 24th March 2017 and fly to Kunming to pick up my Chinese plated bike with the plans to ride as much as I can over Yunnan and Sichuan provinces heading basically over towards Beijing which should be on the same route to Erenhot.
Love to join up with a few of you guys along the way, with over 8 years riding all over china maybe I can be of some assistance.
PM me with details

Sergio, are you the same guy from BKK?

LucasM 24 Feb 2017 13:22

Hi Sergio

This sounds great to us. If you have contact with cheaper quote we are open to it. We are 2 on one bike.
There is another guy interested possibly but he would prefer to go to Kazak border our current agency are open to dropping off at both borders (Mongolia and Kazak) just to help us form a group.

I have two other agents which tell me they have cars interested to go with which saves a lot of costs as they can take the guide but need more time which drives costs up.

I know 14 days is tight but our main destination is Mongolia. We are looking to cross end of May around the 26th would be perfect for us. Can take longer if price is right.

NuffSaid,

Would be great to catch up along the way if possible and pick your brain with all this. Will keep in touch as details solidify.

To both of you:

Would be great to hear your takes on the guide situation in Thailand also. We plan to go through in April I think. But this is not fixed. We still read on Thai customs website that it is possible without the guide and here in Aus still getting reports its ok to go.

Is there anyway people are getting around the issue? Are police enforcing on the streets?

Cheers
Lucas

Nuff Said 24 Feb 2017 13:41

Hi, Lucas.

I think the last date has expired for when you DONT need a guild for Thailand.

The only way round this is to bypass Thailand altogether.
Keep in touch.

LucasM 24 Feb 2017 13:54

Nuff Said

Cheers for the quick reply.

I found another Thailand thread with your comments and will go through all that first before asking more.

I will keep this thread China crossing orientated.

Cheers

Forestwiz 24 Feb 2017 16:59

Hi Lucas I was reading your PM.ANd just realized could be difficult to cross Thailand without a tour/guide.not good news lately.Did not look into agencies really..
But if u are in Malaysia u could also check for a container shipping to Vladivstock Russia .u Said your main destination was Mongolia.(?)
keep in touch .good luck with planning

Yeh we realize we could run into problems we have a few back up plans. But we don't want to skip south east Asia all together just because of Thailand.

As a backup we are considering shipping Malaysia to Cambodia and continuing on. Other option is to do a short transit with guide through Thailand just to get us through.

We definitely want to go Laos to Mongolia through China. You mentioned you knew an agency from your last trip that might give you a price better than $3k US can you get a quote from them for 3 bikes for us to compare?

Look forward to hearing from you. We are very keen to link up with you to make the crossing. How many days do you feel you would want to cross in?

Cheers
Lucas

Forestwiz 25 Feb 2017 02:24

the crossing in a confortable way ,without stress takes 18-20days.already cheacked a couple of years ago ,then we went to Tibet border..
lets see if any other joins in then I can check.Useless to bother the agent if there is no definite plans .keep in touch :thumbup1:

LucasM 25 Feb 2017 02:36

I have a quote for a car and 2 bikes for 21 days for 2,740 US.

And for 1 car 3 bikes for 21 days 2,400 US.

These are from NAVO tours and they have a car interested.

I forgot about those prices :mchappy:

Forestwiz 25 Feb 2017 02:41

that is price x vehicle?

LucasM 25 Feb 2017 02:44

Correct. Price per vehicle/driver

400US for pillion if you pick one up along the way.bier

Forestwiz 25 Feb 2017 02:47

not very cheap ,considering that is most probably only for the permits (?),excluded hotel/gas/food etc....

LucasM 25 Feb 2017 02:55

What price are you expecting?

That is by far the cheapest price we have had so far and I have tried 4 agents so far.

But you are correct only for permits and guide

No food/accom/fuel

Nuff Said 25 Feb 2017 05:34

The Chinese agent has to pay a fixed import deposit for each vehicle.
(Does the same thing as an ATA carnet )

Cars are 50.000 RMB ($7275)
Motorbikes 20.000 RMB ($2910)

The agent normal take out a bank loan at a good fix rate (2% per 30 days ) so out of the money he charges you say for a car he has to pay $145 and $58 for a motorbike.
The full deposit is refunded when a vehicle leaves the country.
So the whole point of the Guild is not too much ensure you don't take the wrong road or you do things that you should not do?
But he just wants to make sure he get his deposit back.

So IMO the prices you have so far sound cheap?

LucasM 2 Mar 2017 19:45

NuffSaid appreciate your input I agree that these prices are cheap compared to what I have looked at so far.

Sergio do you have prices you expect? Can you get a quote for comparison? I have been told by a few of the travel agents that quoted that we need to lock in the trip very soon to give them enough time to process documents.

If you are genuinely interested please let me know. I have already put down a deposit with RideChina but they will refund if the trip doesn't happen with them.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Sergio

Seems like the common way to go.
Do you mind sharing the travel agent contact you mentioned that you think can do cheaper quote so we can contact them.

Cheers

Hey sorry for the slow reply hard to get wifi when we are on the road. We have a group of 3 vehicles going with NAVO tours 21 day tour leaving Laos on 25th of May.

I contacted Irene, she said she would give me a price and never came back to me, but she also mentioned with only 2 vehicles cross will be too high to cross china.

Lisa from Navo has been really really helpful. With the group of 3 vehicles we are now paying CNY 16, 500/vehicle + driver with additional CNY 2800/extra guest.

correct all permits and guide expenses (guide travelling in the other travellers car). Food/Accommodation/Fuel etc. is additional.

HiLucas

Yes I could be interested and got in touch with NAVO.
also sent u a PM.keep in touch
ciao

PS: 9bikes, we paid around $600/13days each last year .paid x group not x vehicle (as NAVO) which made the fee go significantly down as riders joined in.permits etc are actually paid x group

Hey Forestwiz,

Can I ask the name of the company you used to cross at those prices? Interested to check out the website before e-mailing. Thanks
