Routes for South Cambodia
 

Hi,

I'm currently planning a trip into Cambodia (ideally south and west of Phnom Penh), wondering if anyone has any maps or .gpx tracks that would give me a feel for the kind of routes completed in the area.

I fly out to Phnom Penh on Saturday with my wife. We're off to visit my son who's working over there for a year.
He goes biking with his cousin over there so I'll see if he has any routes to recommend.

Ok Kate, we're over here now.
Phnom Penh is mental, there are no rules on the roads from what we've seen!

We travelled to Angkor Wat by air to the north, well worth a visit.

We are currently in Kampot. We traveled here by taxi (3 hours) there are only main routes here that are Tarmac, the road to our hotel was a dirt track.

The place we have stopped at is called Villa Vedici, it's gorgeous and I would wholly recommend the place.

Alex, my son hasn't done much other than work since he's got here six months ago, this is the first time he's ventured out too.

It's a beautiful county, although the poverty in places and pollution is quite bad. Beware of vendors trying to over charge visitors too, very common especially with tuktuk drivers!

We have thoroughly enjoyed it here, heading back to Phnom Penh today and back to Blighty on Thursday.

Hi Kate,

We are in PP at the moment having ridden down from Siem Reap. Roads have been fine but beware of the overtaking etiquette, if you are on a bike you are supposed to leave the road if anyone coming toward you fancies using your lane!

Otres Beach near Sihanoukville is worth a look, I'm sure a lot more of the southern coast is nice too. Take Google Maps with a pinch of salt, we ended up in the Aoral Wildlife Sanctuary on a sand road to nowhere on Googles "recommended" route. I'd try and get a second opinion on any roads leading into the Cardamom mountains or you might get more than you bargained for.

What Tig said - although we loved Kampot to bits. You can make it a little loop on sealed roads, going southeast from PP through the Elephant Mountains, to S-ville and then east along to coast for Kampot and Kep, with a different road back to Phnom Penh. All of this is sealed.

So (sealed that is) is the road through the Koh Krong Conservation corridor up to Krong Koh Krong, although we did not go there due to lack of time.

Traffic on sealed (main) roads are no fun. Sometimes they are also in (very) bad condition (like the first 30 km from Phnom Penh to Batamabang). However Cambodia is paradise for people who love to ride off-road. The Cardamoms for example are stunning. You will have to be a little adventurous though.
