Italy - accommodoation in Dolomites

Hi guys, we are planning a trip to Dolomites end August. Any tips regarding accommodation? It's pretty expensive, we planned to do some camping, is it difficult to find available places in camps in that period? We just need basic pitch (without electricity/water). Also, I now wild camping is illegal in Italy, but has anyone tried it? I see several places in Park4night and iOverlander app - I wouldn't stay in those places more than 1 night - so put up a tent in the evening and pack it in the morning, did anyone do this? Or did anyone get a fine doing it?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Margareta

Yeah, it's expensive. The best places we found to look was for cyclist hostels, most of them seem to be open to motorbikes, too.

End of August is the absolute top tourist season (to the extent that many Italians just plain close their businesses and leave the country for that period). You're competing for space with basically every German who owns a campervan.

The only positive thing is that the Dolomites are really well set up to deal with tourists, every village will have guesthouses, and not all of them will be on booking.com. Between same-night online bookings and just rocking up at a local tourist info center and asking for help, you SHOULD be able to always find something (even if it's a pitch in a friendly yard) - but assume there will be hassle.

hi, thanks for your thoughts. I am aware it will be top of tourist season, but I was hoping end August things would be a little calmer? Or was I wrong?
Regarding what you mentioned - pitch in a friendly yard - how do I find these friendly yards? This is exactly what I thought...
Also, thanks for mentioning tourist centers - this also might be great help.
These kind of road trips are not possible to plan ahead. We have a rough plan, but if on the first day will be pouring rain - we will delay the trip start for a day, so not possible to book accommodation in advance. Additionally - if we go someplace and find it nice, we will stay there for two or three days. Or somewhere where we maybe planned to stay - we might cancel that plan for any possible reason....

It'll be busy until schools open if it's anything like here.

I don't have any secret tricks for finding places, it was literally a case of using google or booking.com and searching for hostels. We just passed through the one time
