Morocco: Where to stay - please contribute
Please add your own recommendations.
Off topic chat removed to keep to the point and easier for all to use. FYI: in my experience booking.com is reliable and often cheaper than the walk-in rate, but the given locations on the embedded google map are not always accurate. This has led to stressful wild goose chasing in busier towns at the end of a tiring day. Unless the place is isolated and you can see the blue pool twinkling on google, verify the precise location. See also my 2023 and 2024 lists later in this thread Others' recommendations: Azrou The Cedars Hotel in the main square is a good overnight base at just 80dh/night (showers and loos in corridor). Tim Cullis Chefchaouen From there we drove to Chefchoen (?? spelling??). This is a lovely little town with a very nice campsite at the top of the hill - both highly recommended. thestens 1/09 Imilchil My personal preference for accommodation at the Tislite Bride (N32 11.802 W5 38.510) because of the beautiful setting. Some years it's warmer than others. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...0-2#post228642 Tim Cullis Marrakech Ibis Hotel, near the main Railway Station. 10 min from the Medina, 43-45 euros with breakfast, parking lot and a bar (witch is expensive) Air America Mhamid There is also a fantastic hotel (the Asalay) in Mhamid that you really should stay a night at... JMo Midelt there's the Auberge du Jaffar a few miles out of town just as the first piste starts (N32 38.672 W4 46.351). Tim Cullis we stayed at the hotel atlas, which is a nice private pension. for a double room we payed 100DH. that included shower and a garage for 2 bikes. coordinates are: N32° 40' 54.7 W4° 44' 39.5 Airhead Tinherir not an hotel but a small guest house, "Retour Au calme" 2 or 3 rooms, less than 1 km after the place on your right hand when toward East, friendly guy. (Eric DN) Tinherir My favourite is Auberge Le Festival which is about three or four kilometers north of the narrow gorge section of the Todra at N31 37.297 W5 33.677, see Auberge le festival. It's a great location and Addi, the owner, is a thoroughly nice guy and deserves the business. He also serves a brilliant 'big breakfast'. I've stayed a few times at the Bougafer at N31 30.199 W5 32.476 which is on the way out of Tinerhir heading west. Another alternative is the Tombouctou at N31 30.913 W5 32.029. Heading west through Tinerhir you turn left at the traffic lights and it's 400m on the left. Don't be put off by the entrance. (Tim Cullis) Tinherir Camping & Hotel ... can't think of the name, but it's on the Ouzarzate side of town going out of Tinehir ... on the left hand side of the road about 2km from the grand taxi rank. The owner is Hassan, secure parking there! (TT-Kira) ---------- My own recommendations (or not) all from 2008 or with a date. hb = half board: dinner, bed & breakfast. Prices are per person unless stated otherwise. Agoudal Auberge Agoudal, north end of village Away from the village run by friendly old Hassan, a basic place with good food and a small stone built room or two and adjacent shower/toilet. Parking off the road. (Stayed again 2024 - see later posts). 120 hb Agoudim (east of Imichil) Auberge Oudadn We only had lunch at this basic auberge with dorms and benches by an apple orchard run by Ahdaous but it's a lovely place for a break, overnight or simply just to get snowed in. (Passed by 2024 - still there). 120dh hb Alnif - start of Route M4 (now 15km piste, north end sealed) Hotel Bougafer West end of town opposite the Gazelle du Sud. Basic en-suite room, good meal but a bit pricey. Tries to send you on to the complex Tazzerine (see below) and bit of fossil hassle. Roof terrace. (Passed by 2024 - still there). 200 hb Alnif Le Gazelle du Sud Nicer place and friendlier, keener staff than Hotel Bougafer IMO. Lets you wheel a bike into the lobby. Truly huge amounts of OK food for dinner and breakfast, I think the cook wanted practice. Nice en-suite room, huge empty easting salon and a terrace. (Passed by 2024 - still there). 170 hb Immouzer (north of Agadir) Hotel des Cascades (2004) We slogged up here in our overheating Merc on the basis of the old Rough Guide account (the current description is unchanged). We should not have bothered. 500-800dh for two it says now – way overpriced. Figuig Hotel Figuig The only choice in town AFAICT, but a great place with a character all its own. Not as old as it looks, with clifftop terrace overlooking the palmerie, outying villages and the lights from Beni Ounif in Algeria. Friendly staff, good food, small en suite room. You can camp here too with a bit of shade. Double room for two 250dh with breakfast, evening meals about 70dh. (2024 - may be closed). Foum Zguid (2006) - Routes M8 and 9 Campsite on the south end of town on the right before the auberge. Small place, not much shade as I recall and locals passing by above stop to stare. OK ablutions. (Passed by 2024 - still there). 50dh for a tent Foum Zguid Auberge Iriki South end of town on the right after the camping. Keen staff, OK food, a bit faded and largish en suite rooms and + with TV. Domestic locale so it’s noisy. Lost a bit of mojo after Covid? (last stayed 2022). 170 hb Guelmin Fort Bou Jerif - 'FBJ' Accessible by road from Guelmin then 10km of corrugated track, also from Sid Ifni. I had the same impression as 8 years ago: brilliant food but a dreary, windy location and over-rated IMO (the actual fort ruins are nearby and well worth a look). FBJ has since become an off-road tour group feature with snake charmers by night but 'Parisian' service. 30 euros hb in a Berber tent with bedding (a switch but no lights). Rooms also available. Igherm - end of Route M10 (all sealed and leads right into town) Hotel Anzal Right on the cross roads in town, just 50dh for a room with toilet/sink in the hall and shower offered, plus 35 for a soup-and-bread dinner plus breakfast. Not a tourist joint (or indeed town) but it does the job. Has a busy locals' bar with widescreen footie and lets you put a bike in their lock up over the road. Yelping dogs by night. The Rendezvous on the Taroudant road is as cheap, even more basic and unused (see 2023 posts). 85 hb Igmir - halfway up Route M11 Igmir Guest House A great tourist-oriented place just over the oued in the palms before the steep climb. Friendly old guy, very nice cosy rooms (ablutions next door) plus a big salon tastefully decorated with local artifacts. Food was OK but there was plenty of it. 195 hb Despite the signs at the northern junction, sadly this place has been closed since 2018 (last checked Oct 2023) Imilchil Auberge Tislite A couple of km north out of town and just off the road by the lake where you can camp (marquee on site). Food was cous-cous unfortunately and it seemed a bit expensive for what it was, but maybe not considering the location and popularity of Imilchil. 440 dp for 2 Merzouga Hotel Kasbah Panorama We scurried up here to get out of a pelting sandstorm. It's the usual kasbah-style joint found around Erg Chebbi but distinctive in that it's on a hill a km or two north of the village. Nice salon and good food but owner seems a bit in love with himself and lost interest once we didn't want to go cameling up the dunes. 200 pp hb Merzouga Auberge Kasbah Mohayut Rough Guide recommended and rightly so. Full Moroccan desert chic treatment with a pool and blue-roberd staff decked out in goofy oversized turbans. Dropped it to 250 hb for me after a bit of a tour for a very nicely done out small room. Food was good, especially the big buffet breakfast. 250 hb Meski Source Bleu (Between Rachidia and Erfoud) Good shady camping around the warm spring that feeds a pool but the coaches don't stop here any more. Spoiled by over insistent 'invitations to tea' which led to the usual, plus locked toilets and inoperable taps (though there’s another ablutions block by the pool). 30 for bike and tent. Midelt Hotel Kasbah Asmaa Pimped-out 'palace' on the south edge of town which you imagine tour groups think is simply fabulous. Room on the roof was nice enough after a long day (we gave up on Rich, down the road) and breakfast was a belly-dancing buffet. Parking out front by the road was extra for the guard. 420 with breakfast for 2. (Passed by 2024 - still there). Missour Afriquia Motel In the Afriquia fuel station forecourt a km or two south of town. Handy place 300km south of Nador. Like a cheap European motel and initially felt a bit brothely. Small en suite room with TV and resto next door. No place for a bike unless you ride up the steps onto the terrace, but an hour after dark all is quite. 170 room only Nekob - end of Route M5 Auberge Ennikil East end of Nekob, a great location overlooking the palmerie and Jebel with parking inside the yard. En suite rooms with wifi and loads of terraces, a small pool and a la carte menu in the oddly plain dining room. Now 480 hb (2024) Ouarzazate Hotel Vallee Inexpensive tourist place near the oued on the south side of town. Semi-pimped décor and medium-to-large turbans, small rooms around a pool with guarded parking out front. Food in the salon was OK. I hear the Jardins next door alongside the oued is better. 440 hb for two. (Passed by 2024 - still there). Jebel Sarhro, Route M5 Auberge Tizi Tazazert We stopped for lunch here (omelette 12dh) but the guy showed me around the basic stone rooms built among the boulders for lodging right on the pass at 7500 feet. Something different and no muezzins for miles. 120 hb (Passed by 2024 - still there). Tafraoute Tafraoute Hotel, end of Route M11 Right in the Afriquia fuel forecourt, a dependable cheapie with shared bathrooms and the usual food, but a noisy town centre location and irritating touts on arrival. 170 hb (room only 80dh). Taliouine Auberge Askaoun east end of town. Loads of small, en suite rooms, salon/terrace as you walked in, great food, various wifis, park bikes inside; Hamid is your man. I stay here all the time, alone or with groups (2024). 250dh HB iirc. Taliouine Auberge Safran opposite Auberge Askaoun, south side of the road. Not stayd here for years but although both dinner and breakfast were great and most of the staff welcoming, my room (all en-suite, it must be said) was twice the size of the bed and as plain as the Anzal in Igherm and owner has ratty spells. In warmer weather the front terrace is the best feature (you can wheel your bike in here) but all in all the Safran did not add up to the 270dh half-board bill. I prefer Askaoun over tne road. Tan-Tan Ksar Tafnidilt Six kms piste off the N1 highway that may be tricky in a 2WD when I was there (came from Plage Blanche, went to Tan-Tan). Didn't stay here but had a good look despite no one around. A great looking adobe kasbah facing the original ruined ksar. Similar pricing to FBJ but a much more memorable location. Room only 150dh, hb 470pp, raïma tents from 60dh pp Taourirt (100km south of Nador) Roadside Aire de Repose: N34° 24.56' W02°57.28' A new complex on the N19/N6 junction about 50km east of Guercif. Adds up to a resto, Comarit booking office, clean ablutions and a friendly guard plus free camping round the back on grass. Handy place to head for off the evening boat but pretty noisy with trucks and trains shunting along the new railway branch line up to Nador. Free Tata Hotel Renaissance Southwest end of town, 5 mins walk from the town centre and in better shape than when we stayed here in 2004; plus they made an effort to prepare food this time. Small en suite room and bike parking offered in the lock up over the road. 170 dp (Passed by 2024 - still there). Tazzarine Village Touristique Bougafer (2004) West end of town; we rocked up at this big characterless site seemingly aimed at big coach parties with but with no one there for the minstrels to play to. Would not stay here again. (Passed by 2024 - still there). Tazzerine Camping Amasttou Down a track south of town in the palmerie. Small, congested on-site berber tents (got a bit itchy so I slept in the car) but well-shaded and popular, with clean ablutions and a good evening meal. More space over the road for campervans. 50 for car and on-site tent. Tazzarine Camping Megzane A few kms east of Tazzerine and down a track. Part of Ouarzazate’s Hotel Vallee so we thought we'd check it out as they're keen on Sahara Overland. Disappointing after the write up on the Vallee website; a bit of desert surrounded by a low wall and attempts to grow some plants. There's a bit of a hut with lamplight and dark ablutions. 50dh per tent Tighmert (east of Guelmim) Facomtour Hotel Half an hour or so out of Guelmim, off the road to Fask. The 2008 Yamaha Tenere press launch came through here apparently but overall you get the feeling 'things ain't bin the same since they built the new highway'. Small en suite room, big central hall with semi-erotic artwork and basic breakfast (no evening meal offered). You can camp outside on the gravel yard too and get on the roof. 120 + 30 for breakfast Zagora Hotel Palmerie A dependable and good value air-con place on the south end of the main street and away from the flashy kasbahs south of the oued where most groups now stay. Pool, always a good meal and breakfast on the terrace. There a Sahara mural map inside but parking out front only (they may let bikes inside). The famous '52 days' sign is relocated round the corner on the start of M8. 210 with breakfast, for two (Passed by 2024 - still there). |
Imilchil
Auberge Todra Stayed last May. Dont remember the price but was not expensive at all. Rooms are ok. Forget about shower. And food was excellent. Probably the best breakfast in Morocco. If you dont want to sleep here, you can stop to eat. |
I had a completely different experience to Chris at the Auberge Soleil Blue. I stayed there for a couple of nights at the back end of 2007 and had a great time. The owner (who is an ex-guide and very welcoming) is a keen musician and most nights he and two chums (suitably "refreshed") will play Berber music mainly for their own benefit and very good it is too. Food is excellent though I can't recall breakfast! It's a beautiful location and the rooms are wonderfully decorated in a most unusual style. It wasn't expensive and you can negotiate.
Can also recommend Le Roi Bedouin about 40km North of Laayoune-note their web site welcome wrongly describes it as South of Laayoune-run by a Belgian couple Luc and Martine. Great food (camel Tajine best ever). Very reasonable and located at N 27 27' 722"; W 13 03' 105". You exit about 4km south of Daoura and follow the well marked easy piste for about 4.5Ks. Ample room for trucks and 4x4s and 4 or 5 permanent Bedouin tents if you fancy that. Good solar heated showers. Q |
My place in Chris' message above regarding Tinehir;
Camping & Hotel Ourti; run by Hassan & brothers on the right at the very edge of Tinehir as entering from Ouarzazate: Tel: 044-83-32-05 Fax:044-83-45-99 Maison d'Hote; 12km sur la route des gorges du Todgha (12km up the Todra gorge road) - stunning place with pool, 4x4 will have to be left on the road, walk up to hotel over small stream bridge, probably wheel bikes across. Fixe: 044-89-52-23 Portable: 072-81-63-83 Kira |

Oh Yes We stayed there for two days in Jan 2006 and they are a lovely couple - do stay. Food is pretty good. Andy |
Auberge Camping Marabout more or less halfway in the piste Merzouga - Zagora.
Simple place run by two young brothers. N 30 38 429 W 04 45 040 E-mail: marabout-tour@hotmail.com Phone: 062811109 |
A couple I found (and would recommend) this summer:
• Hotel Bin el Ouidane, on the R306 between Ouaouizarht and Bin el Ouidane - overlooking the reservoir. Lovely little hotel with apartment style rooms, and a tented rooftop terrace for dining - although the actual timing of food turned out to be a pretty hit and miss affair! Hotel is walled, with secure parking for bikes. Got the price down to 300dh for bed and breakfast. Ideal for relaxing by the (small) pool, and taking in some of the local sights - About an hour or so from the Cascades d'Ouzoud to the west, and La Cathedrale mountain to the south east. • Auberge Souktana on the N10 near Taliouine. Nice little hotel with en suite rooms, and tented accommodation in the garden. 180dh bed and breakfast, and nice evening meals too. Plenty of parking (security ok) and ideally positioned if exploring the desert south of Jbel Toubkal. xxx |
Hotel recomendations

Ibis
Ibis Hotel, near the main Railway Station. 10 min from the Medina, 43-45 euros with breakfast, parking lot and a bar (witch is expensive)

hotel in Marrakech
Try the CTM (tlf 442335), south side of Djemaa el Fna, they had an underground garage once. Hotel Ali, round the corner in Rue Moulay Ismail (tlf 444979) have an arrangement with nearby garage.
You are right on the square, not difficult to find. Safe travels Peter, in Oslo |
Quote:
Hotel CTM - agreed. Garage next door. Right on Djemaa el Fnaa, and they have a roof cafe. Last year about 8-12 euros per night. I hope you're looking at Tim Cullis's Morocco Knowledge base. |
Marrakesh
For location in Marrakesh it is hard to go past the Hotel CTM in Djemaa el Fna. There is a covered parking station right next to the hotel entrance.
Service is surly, rooms aren't great, but there is something very special about riding your bike through the square right up to the door of the hotel as the sun is setting....magic! It was about 200DH for one of the cheap rooms out the back, but you can upgrade to the nicer rooms in the centre courtyard if needed. There is also a nice terrace to watch the world go by. |
The Hotel Rose in Taounate is cold, but clean, cheap and has good food. Just the place to calm down from an accidental trip to Khénifra, if you know what I mean!
Nick. |
Hotel El Andalous in Hermitage area (10 mins walk from main square) isnt bad but get a room on higher floors to avoid noise from evening "traditional entertainment" in the bar (sounds like Helwan province when the Paras are out playing). Carpark is guarded.
Its reasonable, not brilliant. Handy access for town. |
Hotel in Marrakech
Try the Kensi Farah, in the Palmerie.
Could be a little pricey, but safe parking for 2 landrovers easy? 5 min walk to the square. Easy to find if coming from the south. Nick. |
Casablanca - Hotel Excelsior: old french colonial building, right in the center of the city, in front of New Medina. 30-35 euros, rooms with 2-3 beds. Breakfast not included
Essauira - Hotel DarNasiria: on the right side of the road, when you enter the city. Nice sea view. Rooms at 30-35 euros (price in feb 2009) with breackfast. |
The last couple of times I've used Hôtel Ali, retour à l'accueil, RIAD MARRAKECH: Location Riad marrakech , Riads Marrakech , Riad Maroc Hotel Maroc I've just left the bike outside in the street with the alarm on. No problems. Hotel Ali is a trekkers haunt next to Djemma El Fna and a single en-suite room last Oct was 150dh incl breakfast.

Tazzarine
Les Jardins de Tazzarine Bienvenue sur Les Jardins de Tazzarine N30 45.780 W5 33.108 Very nice place to stay, slept in truck, we were treated as VIP's by the owner "Said" great evening meal in Berber tent and breakfast was served by our trucks in the morning, all for a very modest amount of money. Clean modern toilets and showers. Best place we stayed by far and I would plan another trip with this as a high light stop over. Room for only 4-5 4X4's only so I would book in advance. |
hi all,
asilah relatively new apartotel residence ibn rouchd 2 appartment type rooms, no breakfast, but all clean and great views from the rooms 300 dh for two, only bed larache hotel somaryan simple and clean, very good breakfast 300 dh for two, bed and breakfast chefchauen hotel chams in the middle of the old medina, close to the main place/square, nicely decorated and clean 180dh for two, no breakfast greets juergen.... |
Marrakesh - tried the Islane hotel, just round the corner from the main square and opposite the main mosque. paid £48 for a double room/breakfast so not a budget place, but nice rooms and good roof terrace restaurant. They advertise parking but it is in fact over the road at a secure compound next to the mosque - no probs though and was guarded overnight with lots of overland rigs parked up.
Zagora - another vote for la Palmerie, surprisingly good for the money. South of Rabbat towards Cassablanca - camping near a village called Mansouriaa at Ocean Blue camp site, on the coast road. Watch out for sign posts for the camp, and you drive across the sand a bit and into a pretty walled compound with moroccan tiling and clean loos. |

Caiat Lounge: the perfect spot for a week-end in the Rif
Please check the site www.caiat.com Owned by the portuguese Daniel Pinto, half way between Oued Lao mediterrean beach and Chefchaouen town, just one hour from Tetouan. Marrakech
You won't go much better or cheaper than the Hotel Ali, on the main square It's easy to miss but very, very popular. (it's just behind the post office on the main square) Sleeping on the rooftop is also a cheaper option and also popular in the summer. And if they are full. Staff are excellent Views of the main square Breakfast included Morocco general Budget hotels - expect to pay around 50Dh - 70Dh (about 5 - 7 euro) per night, 50 Dh in less popular towns. Parking your bike - most towns Ask or look for the one of the many bike parks that the locals also use. Expect to pay around 10Dh (1 euro) per night or 20Dh max. If they ask for more, find another. There are loads. Many underground so maybe hard to spot. All the ones I used, and it seems to be the norm, are secure and watched 24hr. No problem. Also, ask the guys at whatever hotel you are staying at. I found most people were very helpful indeed. My scooter was parked inside many a hotel courtyard for free. I recommend Chefcheouan. Charming! Just remember to take your 'get rid of the pesky hawkers' stick with you. check this out A Long Lay Down: First we need some transport |
Agdz
Jardins Tamnougalt in Tamnougalte. A few kilometers south of Agdz along the N9, cross the Draa river at the kasbah Taouirt (that one of the Bertolucci movie). After the bridge a few 100 meters at your right hand site. Great, peaceful place with gardens. Ismail Elalaoui is a great host, friendly and discrete. Prepares excellent food. Car park at the entrance, off the road. Cheap for what you get. Empty swimming pool ;-) |
Hotel Baraka in the medina of Chefchaouen
The riad is magnificent, it's newly redecorated and very pleasant looking, tidy and clean and the comfortable terrace is a delightful place to have dinner, refresh or simply dream while watching the sunset over the medina where the hotel is located, not far from the entrance.
We took a room with toilets and shower for about 15 euros per day and that includes a very healthy breakfast served at any time in the morning. Our bedroom is as beautiful as the rest of the hotel. We just don't want to leave. :) The British owners, two brothers, Joseph and Trevor, and their mother Ann, are doing their best to make us feel at home. They even provide Internet and British television ! There's even a spot to safely park our motorcycle right in front of the door. Joseph is the best source of information when it comes to choosing a good restaurant or a specific service in town, we wouldn't go shopping without asking him first what the right prices should be because he knows the region and the people since so many years. Joseph even walked us around the mountains yesterday ! They're all a very lovely family with whom we enjoy spending time and having conversations. We're enjoying a great time here thanks to their kind welcome and their superb riad.. I would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone. Nish |
Hotel CTM, Djemma el Fnaa, Marrakesh. Around 10 euros a night, with breakfast. Rooftop for viewing the square at night. Covered parking in place next door. Basic, and just fine.
The Youth Hostel, Marrakesh. Dormitory accommodation. I forget how much. Park the bike inside the gated grounds. Near the main rail station. Hotel des Remparts, Essaouira. Park your bike inside. 8-10 euros. Rooftop view over the Atlantic. Basic. PS I wish people would give at least an approximate price, if they can remember, for the places they mention. Your "cheap" is maybe not another's "cheap". |
Chefchouan: Camp Azilan, N35.10.644, W005.16.222. Basic camping walking distance from the very cute village of Chefchouan.

Ibis Marrakech
The Ibis on the N9 Route de Casablanca has secure parking.
There's good camping at the Relais de Camping Marrakech a further 2.5km out of town. At 2nd roundabout take a left and head for the Hotel Sangho. The campsite is behind to the right. Happy trails, Jojo |

Campsites; (all based on 1 person in a roof tent on a Landy)
Chefchaouen, about £5 per night, nice simple campsite, nice clean facilites although rustic. Bienvenue Camping Azilan Camping 2 Etoiles Fez; about £6 per night, excellent campsite, great facilities and plenty of building going on eg pool etc. Diamant vert Imichil; about £6 per night, stunning location, good breakfast, toilets and showers, rustic. Camping and Auberge Tiste about 4kms north of Imilchil. Dades Gorge; about £8 per night with an excellent evening meal. Berbere de la Montagne (or sometimes called Camping International on gps data from Olaf map) at the top of the gorge on the right. http://www.berbere-montagne.com/ - Domaine gratuit par IFT.CX Mergouza; about £5 per night, camping on the edge of the Erg Chebbi, an excellent place, some shade, pool, etc. Hassan the owner and staff are really helpful and genuinely nice. camping sahara, dormir sud maroc, dormir merzouga, camping sahara hassilabied, auberge erg chebbi, auberge sud maroc Zargora; about £4 per night, Sindibad campsite is nice, shady, basic, rustic, but noisy. Ouarzazate; about £6 per night, a great campsite 20kms north of Ouarzazate near Tamissint, not much shade, good clean toilets and showers. Marrakech; about £6 per night, no surprise, one of the best campsites we visited, pool, excellent, clean facilities, good food and bar etc relais de marrakech accueil Moulay-Bousselham; (north of Rabat) about £6 per night, there are two campsites as you enter the town on the left, the first we stayed at; nice but ageing the guidebook said, the other near a river apparently is pestered by mosquitoes. Clean toilet and showers. Cheers. |
Most people seem happy with this place in marrakech, including me.

Camping in Marrakech
There's also Camping Ferdous further out of marrakech on the same Casablanca road.
Not as glam as the Relais and a bit more road noise (and the bloomin' peacocks!) but it's OK. Happy trails, Jojo |
Same, try the Relais de Marrakesh. You can rent a room or you can camp or even get one of the Berber tents. The restaurant is decent, there's a pool and the nearest supermarket isn't far.
While you're there, don't miss the ride to Oukaimeden all the way up to the end of the piste. You won't regret. Cheers and have nice rides. Nish |

Essouira camping.
We are at Essouira parked with a lot of other campers by the beach front between the Agidir road and the sand-dune behind the beach. The gaurdee gave us a receipt for the 20 Dh he wanted.
There are about 4 Restaurants one hundred metres away (some a bit expensive) on the beach. Two hundred metres further along the road toward Agidir is a proper camp ground for cars and tents and motorhomes on the eastern side of the road. It's hard to see going south as it's up a short fork but you look right at its entrance going north. This is only one Km from the Casa/Marrakech road roundabout. We have been handed a flyer from a bloke in a car promoting a new campground, 15 minutes south-east from Essouira. It's called "Camping Calme" Is 4 hectares, has bedrooms and suites, a pool, washing machine, showers hot and a restaurant. GPS N31-25'57" W09-39'25". May stay there tomorrow night. If we do I'll post a follow-up. Persistence |
Places we stayed in Morocco
Great Post Chris,
I wont create a long list as we saved every location we stayed in Morocco and Western Sahara as way points that can be downloaded at our website. We also noted a couple of camp sites that have now closed and saved them too. Each accommodation waypoint has summary notes and costs where applicable. Enjoy folks Nick |
I'm not keen on Tanger, too many undesirables hanging around, so I tend to stay at the Ibis near the airport. 470dh/room isn't cheap by Moroccan standards but not too bad if there's two sharing.

Campsite in Tanger
Hi Tito,
Try Camping Ackachar at Cap Spartel Campsite in Tanger just outside the city centre. It's clean enough, loads of shade, clean toilets but no hot water. It's handy for the motorway too. Happy trails, Peter Girling http://www.atlasoverland.com. Tours to Morocco, Tunisia, Arctic Circle, Alps, Pyrenees, Corsica, Eastern Europe and UK weekend tours. |
Merzouga
Chez Jullia. (N31°05.937 W04°00.858). Julia speaks French and German. Can't remember the price, but I guess around 300dh full board. |
Accommodation, Tanger Med/Tanger
I had tended to agree with Tim re Ibis near airport but now notice on GE there is a Service Area on A4 approx 25km from Tanger Med. Does anyone know if it has accommodation and if so details?
Thanks, Peter |
New chain of budget Ibis hotels
I often use the Ibis hotels in Morocco when visiting some of the larger cities for an overnight stop as they are a known quantity and can be booked online. Most are located conveniently close to railway stations or airports. The Accor Group is now creating a new chain of Ibis Budget hotels with new hotels by 2020 in Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Marrakech, El Jadida, Agadir and Fez, with a total capacity of 1,100 rooms. The first of these has now opened in Tanger, situated almost next door to the existing Ibis hotel in the free trade zone in the airport area. Compared to the normal Ibis hotels, there's no swimming pool, no bar. |
Tanger Med
Tanger Med port
If you don't need to hammer pegs in, you can camp in the carpark to the west of the terminal. There are toilets in the terminal and when it is open, food and drink. There is a guard on the gate right there and he will acknowledge your presence. Specially good if you disembark at night as many do. |
... take a look at this spot: Dar Sidi Bounou Mhamid auberge - M'hamid maison d'hotes Mhamid
We stayed there in our camper, but they specialise in their rooms, and can arrange camel pickup from their place, and straight into the sand from there. The food is good! Merv. |
Here’s my list from 2012. In most of these places I was the only guest.
Ain Leuh (south of Azrou) Magot de Atlas auberge Couple miles north of above village Another deserted joint taken by surprise, next to a farm. Sort of chalet style with lots or berberobilia in the dining room. A few rooms upstairs with shared bathroom (but no tp or water in the morning), a kitchen too and a telly in the hallway. Not like southern auberges. Dinner was a tired looking mule of a tagine which I could not stomach on that occasion, breakfast was ordinary too. Wish I'd stopped in the green auberge in the forest a few miles south of ain leuh, but didn't know what to expect up here. 250d dp – seemed a bit much but don't know this area. Ait Youb Gite Chez Moha A couple km west of Amellago, High atlas, 1380m Surrounded by escarpments, don’t be put off by the basic hand painted sign in Amellago. Tranquil refuge up in the hills where the Ziz river starts its run. Walled compound with v nice room and bathroom, gardens, terrace, dining room with maps, a place you'd want to spend 2 nights. Room to bring cars in. 175d dp Assaragh Auberge des Etoiles One of two auberges in this oasis southeast of Taliouine - I use it regularly since i found it. Warm welcome in a big Berber dwelling overlooking the palmerie, garage for bikes, car room out front, food was ordinary, but great location. Family lives below and animals next to them. There is another auberge right by the track a couple of kms down the canyon in Aguinan, but not stayed there for years. 240d dp (2024) Foum Zguid Sable d’Or camping auberge Quiet walled compound half a km south of town, basic rooms with shared but not yet grotty ablutions and even a pool that's filled in June. Well suited if you car camp or use the basic rooms and want to spread out and do some work to the vehicle. 100d with break, we cooked our own dinner. Marrakech (20 mins west of, on N8) Hotel Weedan Pulled in here just before a storm and just as well as saw nothing for miles next day. Off the road a bit in own grounds with pool and play area. As usual I was the only guest. Did not eat dinner and breakfast was nothing special. 2 channel tv but wifi catch up and not getting drenched made it justifiable. B&B 500d was a shock but it was almost comparable with a similar priced Spanish place. Merzouga Auberge Akour, north of village near water tower Gave up looking for the place I wanted so pulled in here, half finished but not sure it will be an better when it’s done. No toilet paper, 20w lights, bare room or nursery style decor, shower a dribble, despite being the better one, food an oily tagine stewed to a pulp. Breakfast omelette was the same. Maybe it’s a regional speciality. Feels like just anther auberge slapped up by a northern agency for their Chebbi tours but the chummy staff looking after the place made it fun. 200dp Rich Auberge Kasbah Dounia Right by the road a few km south of Rich t/o Small roadside demi-pimped kasbah with front parking Food ordinary, bath light and wall plugs not work, adolescent service until owner turned up, There are a couple more places a few miles down the road. 250d hb Taliouine Auberge Souktana Roadside place 2km east of town just by the oued crossing. Accommodation is a bit different, half a dozen very small two bed shaded bungalows with a basin in a grubby garden, or is it a camping area? Ablutions could do with a spruce up. Popular place with dinner in the resto a bit better than average, but main bloke went out of his way to be rude, who knows why. Not stayed here since. 200d hb Taourirt Hotel Mansour Rock bottom cheapie with bare wires and leaky plumbing. En suite and lets you park the bike in reception, but items missing next morning. Other side of the roundabout the Hotel Raid may be a tad less basic. 150 with no breakfast offered seemed a lot. A great full Maroc brekkie, left out the door, over the road first right for 23d. |
Here's our list from the Marrakech to Dakhla via the berm tour.
Ryad Mogador Kasbah, Marrakech 40 euro dinner, B&B (booked online from the UK before departure using www.booking.com ) Handy for the airport (5 mins) was the only reason we picked this place. Big, modern hotel, free internet in the lobby/lounge. No alcohol. Food bog standard buffet style. Did the job. Hotel Sahara Regency, Dakhla 600Dh dinner, B&B Needed a nice place after a week in the desert (and a night with the Army). This place fitted the bill. Secure (Guardian) parking out front. Free internet in lobby/lounge. Laundry service. Food slightly above average. Handy town centre location for a wander around the souk. Camping Le Roi Bedouin 30dh Already credited elsewhere. Great place, great food. Cold Beer "sous la table" Sign-posted off the Atlantic Route north of Laayoune. Can stay in huts or camp in your own tent. Why not take the coast road to N27.49362 W13.22581. Turn off east and follow your nose through some nice small dunes for 15km to the campsite at N27.46170 W13.05190 Camping Aglou Plage, 15km west of Tiznit 70Dh A "European" style campsite. Excellent showers, dishwashing, washing machine, toilets, car washing area. Full of camper vans, but we found plenty of room at the opposite end. A great site for catching up with domestics. Shop next door sells tinned stuff and fresh bread. Camping Aglou Ombriga Military base FREE Personal cook, comfortable room. Free one way guided tour of Western Sahara avoiding all minefields. Downside was the three hour check-in procedure, so probably best avoided! N24.11 W13.27 |

Algeciras? I'm aware that this thread is where to stay in morocco only, but seeing that algeciras is kinda the gateway from the north and i have done a search for algeciras accommodation with little luck, can someone please recommend a reliable camp site, hostel or hotel in algeciras, or maybe share a link to algeciras. |
Bungalows at Diamant Vert, Fes
Hi Folks,
OK, it's not hard core but when you've been camping for a couple of days in the snow in the Cedar Forest and you rock up to the Diamant Vert, Fes late in the day, in the pouring rain to find the campsite flooded, we couldn't resist. Newly built, fully equipped bungalows with kitchen, etc. Not cheap at 500Dh per night but they're brand spanking new and the adjacent restaurant delivers to your door! http://www.diamantvert.ma |

Our list for 2012
- Just after leaving ferry - was late and dark - in Tanger, Ibis Budget Hotel, watchman walked around our bikes all night, staff is very friendly and not expensive. Small fastfood joint across road open till late night. Hotel in TANGER - Book your hotel ibis budget Tanger - camping Relais de Marrakesh - as stated in posts above. A bit tricky to find and some very questionable surroundings, but cheap and spacey huts. - Motel Rif, N13 south of Ouazzane - nice large rooms, cheap, secured parking, very good food and service http://www.motel-rif.ma/ If you wonder about it's name -no, nobody offered us illegal drugs and it totally safe :) - Ouarzazate, hotel Le Zat. It was cheap for double rooms (I think around 35 euro) and... Well, what can I say. In Europe that'll be 5 start hotel I guess. Good we had bottle of cognac with us - played rich sitting at swimming pool with cognac and cofee. Not what I call an "adventure" :) - M'diq, (near Ceuta) Golden Beach hotel. Again - by European means should be expensive. 34 Euros for double room with sea view. Damn, made me feel like I am on family vacation Some more to come |
On R302 (Cathedral) I found near Zawyat Ahansal nice looking accomodation at Dar Ahansal (N 31 50.788, W 006 06.786). Further down direction North to Tillouguite at N 31 59.730, W 006 09.027 is on Google Earth italian picture of one hotel (Albergo de la Cathedral de Roca). Is there really hotel or just false info?
I would like to ask piste condition from same "Roca hotel" through Canyon to Anergui (N 32 04.123, W 005 56.251). No big uphill - from 1.150m to 1.500m a.s.l. on 38km, but possible washed out piste conditions at heavy rains. We are planing to ride GS's here at end of June. Peter, Tim, Chris, ...? |
A few that I recommend from 2012
Icht (between Akka and Assa) Borj Biramane N29 03.550 W8 51.212 Very good showers and loads of them, nice staff and interesting guests. 80 Dh for Two + Camping inc electric if you can make use of it. Casades d’Ouzoud Camping Zebra N32 00.351 W6 43.177 Less than a Km from the falls, the place has a really nice atmosphere and the best showers / toilets I have ever found in Morocco. Two + Camping 75Dh Very tasty three course meal for 85Dh also highly recommended. Azrou Euro Camping N33 26.605 W5 11.420 This maybe not everyone's cup of tea as it's hardly "Morocco" but well worth a visit to this amazing site which is hardly used. Very friendly staff, clean good showers etc. Two + Camping 40Dh and that includes free bread delivered to you in the morning :thumbup1: |
http://www.complexemerzouga.com/
I stayed here a couple weeks ago Dh300 per night with 3 course evening meal and fantastic breakfast. Lovely double room in a great court yard with a bar and pool |
-Merzouga - Nasser Palace
Gorgeous hotel just a couple of km's before Merzouga, it's signposted. I came here to camp, was offered a room with air-con, pool use (usually 70DH), dinner (best I've had in Morocco yet), and breakfast, all for 250 DH. I think I got a good price maybe because it's Ramadan. Ask to camp and they'll offer you a good deal on a room. Gorgeous hotel, very friendly staff, wifi, etc. Right beside the dunes. -Fez - Hotel Dalila Nice little hotel, at parking Oued Zhoun, right beside one entrance to the Medina, near the big main tannery. Paid 150DH a night. They fed us every night, but think that was just because it was Ramadan and they had a feast laid out. Guardiens (or however you spell it) in the car park watching the bikes all night. Wifi, etc... |
SAWADI le riad maison d'hôtes in Skoura near Ouarzazate
very nice Kashba 7km aside the road. read the roadbook ;-) http://www.sawadi.ma/images/stories/...e__SW3a_UK.pdf good food, friendly people. €55 per person |
places to stay
Places to stay which i used october 2012.
Ouarzazate Kasbah Dar Daif. On the edge of palmeraie. 1.5 km along the road to Zogora. Turn left after Hotel la Vallee. A nice place to stay the food was good but I am not sure about secure parking but the people were friendly and the room was good and clean. Merzouga. Kasbah Mahayut. You take the track off to the left there are a number of places to stay just on the edge of the sandy desert. Secure parking and a nice room on the edge of the sand dunes. They even have a large telescope for star gazing. Swimming pool acts as a watering hole for local birdlife. The food and staff were good. Agadir.-Hotel Golden Beach.Lot 3 Founty 8000 Agadir +212 0528 211243 I went from Marakesh over the mountain route to Agadir via Asni. A great route but was not so much fun in the thick fog on the descent. I took about 5 hours to drive it. Agadir is just like any resort on the coast of Spain. I reached the town at 5pm and got lost with the crap road signs. I found this place in desperation. A bland hotel apartment block ten minutes walk to the beach. The room could have slept 4 and had microwave, fridge etc. If you are a group it would be a cheap place to stay off season. Marrakech- Riad Bledena Douar Arbi Ben Bouzi. 2km on route to Ouarzazate +212 (0) 661 182090 Riad Bledna - Guest House Riad Morocco I wanted to stay out of Marrakech and I found this place. Beautifull gardens with secure parking. Rooms onto a cool garden yard. Nice large lounge with lots of books some on repairing landrovers. Staff speak little English so it is school boy french...which in my cae is non existent. It does nottake long to get back into Marakesh. Marrakesh Ibis Hotel; Follow the signs for the railway station. Make sure you book in advance over the internet to get the best price. Bland functional business hotel. Staff friendly and the breakfast was good. Free internet and good it worked well. They say they have parking...I am not sure you can park outside (pay the man 10 dirham only). I did not see any secure bike parking. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the Medina. |
Tafraoute
Much loved cheapy Hotel Tafraoute has gone downhill. 120dH for 2 but the shared toilets and showers were disgusting, AVOID and look elsewhere Tata Camping Municiple 40dH for 1 tent and 2 persons Taliouine Auberge Toubkal 200dH for a room, great but watch out the the guardien he's a little scary looking ;) |
Merzouga: Stayed at Nomad Palace Hotel Don't follow signs to Left or right but 100 M before Merzouga take tarmac to your right ( if you are heading South before Merzouga). Then after 1 mile gravel track to your left will take you there ( 500M track OK for tarmac tyres) N 31.04 6291 W 003.99 6504
Very nice and close to the camels for a camel ride out to the desert. Also right on Erg Chebbi so if you want to ride on the dune then just ride. Very good food and great swimming pool. Ali is the owner and manager. info@hotelnomadpalace.com 212-535-88-20-89 |
accommodation morocco
Hope this reply's not too long.
I travelled as a solo woman in May 2012 and would also like to disrecommend going it alone on the pistes cos I did come to grief and was ripped off mightily to be 'rescued' by a local!! I posted requests for beds on CouchSurf which mostly worked well and is a way to experience local life and I also used cheaper places and went to the hammams which are brilliant and a great place to meet the local women TAZA Hotel de l’Etoile on Pl Moulay Hassan opposite the bus station. By the souk in the upper town. As you come down from the Djebel Tazzaka Circuit you get to the old town first. New part is down the hill. You’ll need to ask as the sign is hidden behind some colonnades. Very friendly and clean and lots of blankets. No private bathrooms but the hammam is 2 mins away. Lots of room for bikes in the courtyard. 40Dh 1 person in dble room. Best price by far in the whole stay! MIDELT The Bougafer 7 Ave Mohammed V in the centre of town was friendly and clean. Guardien watches parking. Some better rooms with showers but again hammam around the corner. 70 Dh single in a double. Went out to Auberge de Jaffar but it felt very tired and past its best especially at 350 hb. According to the locals it’s now used for drinking and women!! But met some bikers who said it was fine TODRA GORGE Hotel de Lune de Gorge. About 9km from Tinerhir before the gorge itself overlooking a river bed and opposite the campsite with lots of flags. Very friendly. Arrived late but Layhcin cooked me a tagine. Safe parking. Dble room with balcony, hot shower! Dinner and breakfast 150Dh DADES GORGE Chez Pierre for a blowout. Wonderful food, best breakfast of the trip, great staff and decent doubles with private terraces overlooking the river. About 2 mls before the bendy bits up to the fancy Kasbah. Pool. Alcohol license. Bike locked in compound behind the kitchen. 500Dh single hb which compared well with not so nice places. SETTI FATMA Dar Piano. Actually 6km before Setti on left hand side and a much more pleasant option. French run, very civilised! Front rooms have balconies, back ones look onto river. Private parking Hb 250Dh TIZI TEST On the summit there is an auberge – rather basic but great setting. Supposed to be hot water, large rooms, heating provided. And a huge open fire. There’s also the option of camping there. Good parking. 250Dh single hb but was asked the same price down in the valley MARRAKECH Hotel des Riad des Princesses. Off Rue Riad Zitoun el Kedim which runs off Jma el Fna so very central. Can ride a bike up there to drop off luggage and safe parking by CTM hotel for 25 Dh/day. Also along Rue bar Agnou for 10/day. Breakfast is great, hammam, Jacuzzi, lge rooms, private terraces, great staff. I paid 500Dh single but think it might normally be more. Definitely one of the better ones in the price range and I looked at a LOT. My touch of luxury in a long trip. KSABI Chez Saeeda and Mustafa. About 4km out of the town and a better alternative than Henri IV. Well signed. Fairly basic – they’ve not quite finished everything off but a lovely warm welcome and despite a 7.30 arrival Saeeda made an epic tagine. Hot water, terrace with splendid views. Well situated to start the back road down to Imilchil and Todra. Camping possible, Safe parking. She was so pleased to see a woman biker she brought my bike Ahmed into the kitchen so he could be 'nice an warm'. AZROU Hotel Bonsejour seems a better bet than the Cedars which is past its best. And the manager was pretty creepy. Bonsejour is on the square behind and has rather more local life going on. Small rooms but if you get a balcony it’s ok. Private garage. Not en suite but staff will take you round to the hammam. 70 Dh single 120 Dble no breakfast. Some nice patisseries on the square. Lots of auberges on the road up to Ifrane which was a ghost town in mid May and an amazing Disneyesque/Randolph Hearst Castle campsite with 20ft high coffee pots. ASILAH Hotel Mansour recommended in Rough Guide but not that clever. None of the promised hot water, shower wouldn’t fix to the wall, no stairwell lighting despite frequent reminders. Breakfast listed as included. They demanded 25Dh for a coffee and croissant!! And it’s recommended as an English speaking travel agency but I was given very wrong info re ferries. But a pleasant town and decent fresh fish restaurants near the medina walls |
Chefchaouen
Hotel Andaluz: 120 DH for 2 pers. Splendid view on the roof terrace ( 2 rooms only)on mountains and medina. Friendly staff and you can use the kitchen to cook and make tea. Hot water and clean showers and toilets. DON'T: Pension Castellana: our laptops have been stolen from the locked bedroom; no traces of burglary, so they used a key. As the pension has no locked and safe deposit the only place you can leave your stuff is your room. Owner denied any responsibility and declared to the police that he suspected us to have taken them ourselves and try to defraud. Luckily that the friendly policemen spoke both english and french and told us the whole story after the owner of the pension has been send away. |
Chefchaouen - Riad Baraka - bit pricier than other options, but really enjoyed my stay. lovely building, room and terrace, peaceful and theyve got beer! its within the medina so you have to park and hoof in your gear, bit hard to find if you're not prepared with directions/map beforehand (like me)
Meknes - camp Agdal within the city is no longer operational, despite what google maps indicates as I discovered the annoying way. found another campsite about 10mi north on the N13, lookout for the sign. dont remember the name but you cant miss it. |
Ouarzazate
Residence Rosas: It is an aparthotel, 200 DH for an apartment with two separated rooms, a bathroom with WC and a kitchen with everything you need for cooking . In bedroom there are two beds for adults and one for children, in living room - three sofas, table, TV. Breakfast included. It is located in a residential area, about 20-30 minutes by foot from the city centre. They allow your bike inside the hall at night. |
List from a 10-day moto tour in November 2013
Hotel Toulousain, Marrakech
Recommended by Loc2Roues (2 min walk) and like website says ‘The hotel has basic accommodations” Big ‘colonial-era’ rooms, group showers, terrace, OK breakfast, bar and pizza resto next door. May try Loc’s flashier suggestion next time wifi 380d for 2 in a twin with sink/bidet for 2 nights About the Hotel Gite, Agoudim Stayed in Assaragh up the cliff last time, and as expected, everyone loved this place in a tranquil palm valley. Rough piste in from northwest but road now reaches from the south and west. Bikes by the front Lots of beds, great food, friendly folk, cats and alcohol too. empty pool only guests 1700d for 5 in a screened 8-bed dorm, 2 nights full board (= 170 pp FB) Hotel Bab Sahara, Tazenacht Hot water needed asking Vehicles in a yard food was good wifi in the dining room 250pp HB only guests I like the guys at Bab and still stay here if passing (2024) Chez Moha, Aït Youb My group not so impressed on arrival at this traditional mud and straw High Atlas Berber compound but a cold ride and evening may have contributed to that. Ali brought in a heater to the dining room, the food was a feast, morale recovered. In November what this place needs is wood for the fireplace next door. Our room next to the resto was sewage smelly and water pressure was lame. Other rooms over the courtyard were fine. Maybe better in warm Springtime. Also now has the new and more conventional (tiles, etc) Auberge Amellago nearby. 175pp HB only guests http://gitechezmoha-amellago.com/bon...llite/?lang=en Hotel du Vallee, Ouarzazate (just south of the causeway) Stayed here years ago. A big hotel perhaps past its heyday but as one said ‘it’s the first hotel where everything works’. Water hot without asking, good pressure, rooms big enough and with aircon/heating, nice feast prepared, friendly service, warmed resto ‘tent’, full pool. A reliable cheapie prior to the 4-hour ride back to Marrakech bikes inside wifi and alcohol. 200pp HB only guests Trip report Ch |
On the coast
Imessouane (between Agadir and Essaouira) Auberge "Chez Hassan"
had first hot showers in town, clean place, Hassan spent a lot of time in Germany. German shepards as guardian dogs. Very good food on pre order, fish is bogt directly from the fishermen at the port and they only buy what they need fresh. Noone will leave the table hungry EVER! Bring your own booze or buy next door at "Tasra" (run by Hassan's brother) Essaouira - Hotel Villa Maroc expensive but a beauty, next to the port. owned by swiss-moroccan couple. Home made Argan oil (The only source I can be shure it's 100% pure, because they own the trees and mills and do everything themselves after being screwed over by mill owners) Mirleft (on the coast north of Sidi Ifni) - Douar Timgrad Owned by french Motorbike enthusiast called Martin, cooks like a boss, chops his own lowriders out of 50cc bikes and scooters, used to guide quad tours in the area so he'll have hints for tracks to explore. Midelt - Hotel Kasbah Asmaa
South edge of town on the the main N13 route. About 100 meters past the Ziz gas station. Was able to park bike inside the protected courtyard area. Paid the watchman 15 - 20 dirham a day for keeping an eye on it. Paid 350 for a room for one person including breakfast. 450 including a dinner set meal. They have decently speedy wifi/internet in the lobby. Heaters in the rooms and plenty of hot water in the shower. Staff spoke decent English and was VERY helpful in arranging things and helping me get stuff done. Nice cosy hotel with a fire place and beautiful public areas. The bathrooms in the rooms leave something to be desired but are clean and working. I stayed 4 nights and wouldn't hesitate to return. |
I stayed in the follwing auberge and i recomend strongly each one of them..
1- Chefchaouen...............................Dar Gabriel ( superb location & friendly) 2- Midelt........................................Kasr Timnay (The overlander regular stop) 3- Erg Chebbi..................................Auberge Du Sud ( Impecable as always) 4- Ouarzazate (Oasis Fint).................Les Terrace des Delices ( Beautifull oasis) 5- Marrakech...................................La Ferme Berbere ( excellent location outside the crowded Marrakesh - guarded parking) If anybody needs more info prices contact pm me... |
Lac Maider camping/Auberge
Lac Maider camping/Auberge-Tafraoute; On the MS6 piste stayed here overnight after being sand blased on the MS6 piste, excellent people and food, a great little stop over, toilets/showers OK, asked to pay nothing as I was taking a broken part to Zagora for them, like I say a great little place with great Moroccan hospitality.

List from November in Morocco
Many places below updated from this 2013 post.
Hotel Toulousain, Marrakech Handy for Loc2Roues (2 min walk) and like website says "basic accommodations” Big ‘colonial-era’ tiled rooms, some en suite, set around courtyards, good breakfast, lots of cafes and restos nearby. Good wifi reaches ground floor rooms but can't bring a moto in, or even park too long to unload. Garages and guardian parking nearby. From 150d pp in a sink + bidet room Website Gite Paradis, Agoudim Again, everyone loved this place in a tranquil palm valley below the cliff. Bikes by the front. Lots of single beds in screened dorms, great food, cats and alcohol too. But sadly the grandiose patron turned up as we left and stiffed me at 300d pp half board (nearly double from last time). Nice place but not worth that so make sure you establish a price or stay at the place below. Auberge des Etoiles - Assaragh The other auberge in the valley. Warm welcome in a big modern Berber dwelling overlooking the palmerie above the cliff switchbacks. Bike let in the garage, car room out front, steamy hammam room, food was great this time. Family lives below and animals next to them. 200d dp Hotel Bab Sahara, Tazenacht Midle of town, modern courtyard block behind main hotel Gated parking area Good menu, pizzas make a nice change, friendly staff Wifi best in the front coffee bar area 250pp HB Kasbah Itrane, Tamnougalte Great find one dark night, lovely spacious kasbah with classy rooms. Everyone loved it. Great service and food. Shaky wifi in reception. Parking compound. Right below Jebel Kissane 300d pp HB and well worth it for a demi-splurge. (Best value of the 3 places to stay nearby - one more basic, the other mason d'hotes even nicer but pricey) Website I stay here regularly (2024) Kasbah Tamadirt, Tamadirt (18km east of Agdz) Authentic locally renovated mud and palm trunk kasbah set among the village's crumbling ruins. A bit dark, plain decor and small inside, but it's the real thing - you can't make a big room with mud. Friendly family runs it, food was good, seems popular with small Euro groups. Bikes inside the building. 220d pp HB Only had lunch here but the auberge in the Tizi n Tazazert pass (Jebel Sahro route) is 200d half board. In November would have been extremely chilly at 2350m. Hotel du Vallee, Ouarzazate (just south of the causeway) A big hotel perhaps past its heyday but as one said ‘it’s the first hotel where everything works’. Water hot without asking, good pressure, rooms big enough and with aircon/heating, food was OK in the warmed resto ‘tent’, full pool. A reliable cheapie but may try the modern Ibis next time. Wifi in reception and alcohol. Bikes inside - tip guardian 200pp HB |
Wherte to stay - Assilah
Hotel Azaylah - Dh396 per night for good double with private facilities. No food available but its around the corner from the medina and wealth of good cafes and restaurants. Guardien parking in street outside.
Also noticed good looking campsite at North end of beach with grassy pitches. |
Would be very interested in knowing more about this campsite. The two across the road from the beach at the north end of town were closed years ago.
Peter |
I stayed at the northernmost campsite in Asilah a couple of nights after seeing you in Midelt Pete
It was open but only me and a camper van. Seemed to be run by kids whist I was there and cost was confusing. The bungalows seem to have local families living in the and the toilet/shower block was pretty dire. I planned to stay 2 nights but left after 1. The campsite next door didn't appear open |
Going south, there's a 3 star hotel an hour before Terfaya. In Akhfennir, just before the Khnifiss N.P. Impeccable...clean....excellent beds even! Name is Sahara Beach, built in 2012. 280 for a single with breakast, off season.

Stayed at the following hotels/auberges in October 2014. Traveled solo for a week, met my girlfriend at Agadir Airport so some of the room prices are for two people.
Erfoud Hotel Jnane N31.26.344 W004.13.900 above a restaurant on the main road, car park to rear, 200dh inc. b'fast. OK but restaurant can be noisy. Ouarzazate Hotel Amlal N.30.55.249 W006.55.044 on a quiet street to the west of town. Parked the bike in a small store room (locked but only space for 1 bike), security guard on reception, b'fast and room 200dh. Friendly, OK. Would have stayed at Bikershome but Peter was away. Mararkech Hotel Farouk, Avenue Hassan II, N31.37.921 W008.00.869 air con but not working very well, 250dh inc. b'fast. parked bike on pavement directly outside entrance. Cheap for Marrakech. Marrakech Hotel Corail, Avenue Hassan II, not far from the above. Air con, locked underground carpark, fairly comfortable, 550dh double inc.b'fast. Worth paying the extra for the parking. Tarroudant Hotel Tiout N30.28.155 W008.52.562 comfortable, small balcony, air con, tv. 250dh inc.b'fast. parking outside in large carpark. Recommended Ait Benhaddou Auberge La Baraka, N31.02.571 W007.07.811 400dh for two inc. evening meal and b'fast. Lovely place to stay, friendly, good food and views, parked bike inside Auberge, facility to have washing done Highly recommended Zagora Hotel La Palmerie end of the main street next to the famous "Timbuktu 52 Jours" sign. An old favourite although it's getting more run down each visit. Parked bike inside hotel, night security, friendly staff, bar and beer (if they haven't run out) double room and b'fast for two 210dh. Recommended Tamtattouchte (10km north from Todra Gorge) Auberge Baddou N31.40.223 W005.32.872 Comfortable, pool, great food, friendly staff, parking in grounds. 250dh per person inc b'fast and evening meal. Great place to stay, highly recommended. Igherm Hotel Rendezvous N30.05.380 W008.27.623. 80dh for two. Very basic accommodation, food was ok. You'll probably skip using the shower here and sleep with your biking gear on as we did. Think it's the only hotel in town so serves a purpose but not the sort of place you'd choose to take your girlfriend or wife (although I did and she's still talking to me). Sidi Ifni Hotel Bellevue N29.22.893 W10.10.612 Old colonial type hotel perched on the cliff with great sea views. Restaurant with beer and wine, very comfortable rooms, great views, car park outside entrance, friendly staff, 200dh double and b'fast 30dh. Recommended Tangier Hotel Picaso. City centre not far from the souk above the port. N35.46.778 W005.48.742 Large rooms, tv, air con and a locked underground carpark. 250dh. Recommended because of the safeparking, can be noisy at night as there's a few bars outside. IBIS Hotels Always a safe bet and found in major cities. Can be expensive but deals available if booking well in advance on-line. We saved about 50% at one this way. Stayed at Meknes, Agadir and the Ibis Budget (about 100dh cheaper) in Tangier. |
March 2015
Laayoune Hotel Jodesa 100m north of CTM bus office on opposite side of the street. GPS N27.153029, W13.196612 (approx) Very pleasant people. Single room DH160 with shared bathroom. Clean and well maintained. 160DH for en-suite Parking outside on pavement with guardien. Set-back from street kerb, cafe next-door for extra security. Nice breakfast in cafe too. Tan Tan Hotel Biranzarane A few hundred metres from town centre. Next door to what I assumed was an army barracks (all the khaki on duty) but it seems it's the Palais Royale GPS N28.43979 W11.10614 Many room with no external window; window(with shutters) onto internal corridor. Probably very hot in summer Moto parking kindly offered on private patio next to front door DH 70 shared bathroom Kasba Tadla Hotel les Alles GPS N32.59685 W6.26298 Moto parking in internal courtyard (via narrow door) Single room with small balcony DH70. Shared bathroom I really liked K Tadla; a well-maintained kasba, a few little parks. (Who's the Frenchman who abandoned his Yamaha - a TDM I think - in a corner of the courtyard? ) Sidi Slimane Hotel Aymen Modern hotel, air-con, restaurant, terrace, swimming pool (empty) Double room, en-suite incl buffet breakfast DH330 - after some negotiation, and it was low season. GPS N34.25980 W5.92083 Secure parking out back. |
April 2015
Chefchaouen Riad Baraka. booked through hostel world. Lovely riad in old medina. Secure parking outside medina. Very old place with a lot of charm, fantastic roof area. No single rooms, so not good value for a 1 unless you went in the mixed dorm. Run by an english lady and her sons. They do beers too! 250 dh, including breakfast but would be the same for 2 people. Has its own website. Taza de la Gare. on corner by roundabout next to station. secure garage. Modern rooms with ac, tvs and showers. Nice and cool. 200dh, but I suspect it would be the same for 2 people as I was in a double room. Beni Tajjite Beni Zitti guest house. this town is said to have no accomadation, but I was fortunate enough to meet Musapha, who owns this hotel. There are a number of rooms with various facilities and I was made to feel most welcome with an evening meal home cooked for me. A modern building, wifi, tvs etc situated just outside the town on the Boudenib road. If coming from the north, ask at the Green Oil fuel station for Mustapha. He is also building a luxury hotel here, not sure when it will be finished though. 300dh for a twin room, with breakfast. Good value home cooked dinners too. A real slice of Maroccan hospitality! I think he also has a more basic hostel in the town. email:benzitti2008@gmail.com Efroud Camping Tifina 5kms south of Efroud. Decent campsite with plenty of facilities, swimming pool, etc, some shaded plots which I managed to bag because it was quiet. No bog paper. 80dh/ night. |
Tetouan:
Riad Dalia - very nice view from the roof terrace. Paid 240MAD including breakfast, WIFI and a shared shower. Nicely situated within the Medina. Good Tajine (Menu for 100MAD)! Chefchaouen: Hotel/Hostel Souika - again nicely located inside the old Medina. Very much liked the honest and laid back attitude as well as the opportunity to meet some backpackers and other travellers. As this is Chaouen though, most guests seem to be busy with dope, which I found a bit annoying but...well... Dorm bed: 60MAD/night. Rooftop accommodation for 45MAD (guess that's the 25 bed dorm). Fez: Riad Nassim - amazing value for money! 300MAD for 2 nights including breakfast, good Wifi (on rooms), A/C and ensuite bathroom! Owner is very nice and his concierge/ helper, Abdul (I guess) is fantastic. You can order a sandwich in the middle of the night and he'll walk into the Medina and get some for a fair price. Also really nice roof terrace. Cons - I'm not a fan of staying in Fez Medina. Be aware of the hassle. There is an overall attitude of ripping tourists over and people even tell you not to trust anyone. You are also completely relying on guides as it is impossible to find your ways through the medina without guides. Midelt: Hotel Bougafer - nicely situated for those wanting to go for the Cirque du Jaffar (although not as nice as the Auberge Jaffar). Nice view from the roof terrace, and Midelt is overall quite a nice place to stay at - no hassels, good views, nice climate, nice people and everything you need in terms of food, petrol, cash etc. The guard asked me to park my bike inside the marked in the middle of the night because of the lack of light due to frequent power cuts. Found that quite nice! 110MAD/night incl. breakfast. WIFI is not reliable though. Ilmichil: Hotel Restaurant Izlane - nice room with ensuite bathroom, good WIFI and on site parking. Ilmichil itself is quite a nice place to stay at - not as remote as some of the mountain Gites (you got markets, cafés etc.) but doesn't feel overly touristy as well. The Kefta at the Hotel is amazing! Some 240MAD/night incl. dinner and breakfast. |

Oasis de Palmerie In my prevoius mail I should have said turn left after crossing Oued. Azrou Camping EuroDisney. Met an experienced Maroc trek walker who swears by this new site just before you get to Camping Amizegh. |
Taounate : hotel du lac : you can only sleep, no breakfast. Very clean, very nice, toilet and showers are good and clean. It's in a small alley and the parking is at the back. The guardian does his job very good and literally keeps an eye on "his" parking lot (I could see him through the window when I had to pee in the middle of the night).
It was 256 dirham for a room with three single beds. I doubt you can get any cheaper (and as clean!) as this hotel. |
Fes:
Diamant Verd. reception speaks good english and french, campsite with bungalows, best breakfast!!! 5 Route Ain Shkef, 30000 Fès, Marokko Merzouga: Ksar Bicha best accomodation close to the Erg. Reception speaks perfect german, french and english. Nice breakfast & Dinner, nice rooms, nice view from the roof. Not the cheapest, but I really recommend this place because of the nice people. Marrakech: le-relais french owners. Nice place, camping and tents for rent. A bit outside of marrakech which makes it quieter. Good place if you travel by car (safe parking etc). They sell beer!! |
Have to say this place is ideal to stay in Merzouga.
Just south of the town look out on your left for the sign "Hotel Kasbah Touareg" Said and the guys are good to be with and he is not pushy even though he offers Tours in his 4x4 and Camels as everyone does here!! WiFi is nice and fast..which is a surprise!!! Camping here is cheap..the same as all over Merzouga and the showers/toilets are clean. I am happy to recommend this place and if you want to contact him first his number is. 00212662578403 |
From Nov-Dec 2015
Updates from last year's post Marrakech - Gueliz (nr Mac D's) Hotel Toulousain Still OK for the Loc convenience. Good breakfast, lots of restos nearby. Great wifi right to the rooms. 250d pp for an old-style en suite (+ 50 for a 2nd person). None en suites also, plus newer suites. No parking. Ouarzazate south Hotel du Vallee, Easy to find and not so bad really but now 280d pp, secure bike parking. Heating/a-con rooms. wifi in reception. Assaragh Auberge des Etoiles - spacious dar; simple charme rustique, bikes in lock-up Tazenacht Hotel Bab Sahara, pizzas, secure courtyard parking, wifi-ish in the cafe. Tamnougalte Kasbah Itrane. Now this has a terrace delices Tizi n’Test Dar Elmouahidines, blue place on R203 to Tizi n’Test., 30km before pass. 200d hb. Small rooms, can get chilly, but handy. Destroyed by quake 2023 New places tried, noted or checked out If you're in the upper Ait Bouguemez valley (south of Azilal) there are several rustic trekkers' gites in the string of villages that make up this commune. Stopped in to check out the remote Gite de Cathedral, 10km piste from Tillouguite where the tar starts. 200d hb. Rustic as you'd expect but nowhere else for miles. Presumably popular with climbers. Several small 3-bed rooms plus a double and a 4. One bathroom/toilet. Big fireplace that hopefully gets lit in winter. Fint, 12km SW or Ouarzazate Terraces des Delices, Pass through a new suburb, turn off and a quick river crossing just before arrival. It's a terrace all right, but not as delices as I expected for the €30 hb in tiny rooms. Stayed again a few years later - switched the price on departure. Won't stay again. Foum Zguid Auberge Iriki - signed south end of Foum Zguid, on a side street. Stayed here years ago but no all-night no barking dogs this time, just surprisingly good wifi if you're close to the cyber next door. 180d hb. Warm welcome, closed courtyard parking and usual good food. Also asked about Hotel El Fayja by the Afriquia 15km north of FZ - was told 400d ro. Have since stayed here when stranded. Was OK odd place; no one stays here. Marrakech, north on the N09, opposite the stadium Le Relais de Marrakech Lovely haven but I thought a bit expensive @ 35euro for a ropey tent room only. Good resto. I guess it's the easy parking and camping close to Marrakech that must make it popular. A bit of signposting from the north would not hurt and incorrectly positioned on Google maps (link above correct). Ksar Tissergate - 8km north of Zagora, signed east off the road. Hotel Kasbah Ziwana Genuine mud-brick place accessed on foot along the cool tunnels of the part-ruined old kasbah overlooking Oued Draa palmerie. Great terrace lunch. 250d hb. Parking in a plot outside with guardian, but still a bit exposed for baggage bikes. Good option outside Zagora babylon. Tissint Kasbah Tissint, signed at the bend north end of town. Yet another classy but deserted new hotel overlooking the oued. Caught them by surprise for a nice salad lunch, A/c rooms round a pool said to be 250 hb. wifi. At least one cheapie in the town's main street, also. Nr Zouweiat Ahansal, 75km SE of Azilal Dar Ahansal, (1660m). Lovely place with exceptional attention to detail inside and out. 280d hb (but 100d single supplement). Only one there and an odd atmosphere of suspicion developed, especially from the owner. But food was great and not charged for teas and water, as other places of this calibre might do. Dongle wifi. Fire place in room but no firewood so chilly in December. Possibly another kasbah in the village too. |

Hello
It was first time for me to be in Morocco without own experiencies so I was on the safe side with accomondations and secure parking and reliability was in priority. The prices are not always low but still I share the experiencies maybe from any reason it can be usefull to someone. Sometimes I made prebooking sometimes improvised. Asilah – Berbari Maison d Hótes Guest house located some km’s from Asilah and from the highway on the countryside. Secure parking in the backyard. 2km off road route which can be difficult to ride in case of rain. The service and food was ok but that was my most expensive accomondation 600 DH incl.room, breakfast and dinner. Wifi available the staff was young ladies, they were firendly. Marrakesh – Le Relais du Marrakesh Camping which offer also rooms. It has pool also and wifi. 40 Eur incl breakfast. Restaurant offer dinner. The city center 10 min drive from the camping by taxi which runs hourly from the camping (60DH). Taiouline – Hotel Safran On the side of the main road. Bike parking in the closed backyard. 25 Eur with breakfast. They can offer dinner which was ok. Firendly staff. Ait ben Haddou – Kasbah du Jardin Good place with young friendly staff. Good conversations with them. 350 DH incl. room, breakfast, dinner. Wifi was good in the restaurant. Parking secure in the backyard where they offer also places for campers. Hassi Labied village just near to Merzouga – Camping Ocean de Dunes The place I liked the most on my tour. Run by berber brothers and they are friendly and helpfull very much. The camp has basic but clean rooms. Spent two nights there 260DH /night incl room, breakfast, dinner. I had the best food in Morocco here. Located as near as possible to the dunes. Wifi runs well. Hope to be back. Midelt – Riad Villa Midelt Off side from city center on a quiet place with parking in the yard. For a biker a bit fancy but in the same time very stylish decoration. 30 Eur with breakfast. Wifi was hectic a bit. Meknes – Riad dar Zadine 10 min drive from city center (15 DH by taxi). Closed parking place. 400 DH incl breakfast. Arrived a bit late so dinner was not possible. Still lovely place. Tanger - Camping Miramonte The camping offers room too for 300 DH. Run by local guys in the name of the owner. This place was quite a mistake. The room was in bad shape. Go there in case of emergency only. The only advantage that near to Tanger Med. For sure with some more research better accomondation can be found with same secure parking. |

Morocco Lodging, April 2016:
1 man, 1 motorcycle Beer - liquor stores MAD12, bars MAD16+ Casablanca: Hotel Du Louvre, MAD280, separate garage parking - close, big room & bed, ac. WIFI in lobby. Located in a decent area, lots of shops, cafe's, restaurants, bars and a couple liquor stores (one is just across the main street). If you stay more that one night, MAD250. N 33 35'36.1 / W 007 36'57.9 The hotel owner told me parking would be MAD20 per day, however when I returned for the moto the attendant was unsure of the price. Hotel Suggestions
My viewpoint on the following various places;
Marrakech Hotel Toulousain Hotel Toulousain 300MAD includes breakfast A good, clean hotel with fast wifi and traditional style rooms. No aircon. Very close to Loc 2 Roues and located near to cafes, bars, Starbucks and a range of shops. Helpful and pleasant staff. Recommended. Motorbike parking not straight forward, unless you can squeeze a bike in the courtyard. Ouarzazate Hotel La Vallee 300MAD includes breakfast Modern hotel with swimming pool, restaurant and wifi. Rooms have aircon. Good traditional food. Bikes can be left behind locked doors under the watchful eye of a guardian. Recommended. Todra Gorge Auberge Le Festival 800MAD includes breakfast and dinner A touch pricey but the rooms are quirky cave style and the location is a treat in the gorge. Very friendly staff and you really can’t go wrong with a stay here. Great location for travelling north or south through the gorge. Limited wifi and no-aircon. Beer available, at a price. I've stayed here a few times now and it's a gem not to be missed. Always seem to be a couple of our groups staying here. Bit or music and banter in the evenings. Recommended Merzouga Ksar Bicha 500MAD includes breakfast and dinner Great location overlooking the dunes. Rooms have aircon and wifi. Hotel has a decent pool, café style bar and restaurant. Plenty of room to leave bikes right outside reception. Helpful and friendly staff. Recommended. Zagora Kasbah Sirocco 200MAD including breakfast A great hotel with modern facilities. Swimming pool, wifi, alcoholic bar, restaurant etc. Clean modern rooms with decent showers. Located just outside the town. Good dinner in the evening at sensible price. Guardian for bikes left at the front overnight. Tazenacht Hotel Bab Sahara 100MAD for a room A rather chaotic hotel right in the centre of town. It’s cheap, and tatty but has a pool, wifi and can provide pizza. Rooms and bathrooms are basic, sheets were dirty and tatty. But hey, it’s cheap as chips and handy for the fantastic trails around the area. Busy social hang out for the locals. Bikes can be left in a locked car park. Tata Hôtel La Renaissance 150MAD for the room Looks good from the outside, but very tired and tatty inside. Rooms are tiny and the bathroom was very basic even for Morocco. Might have been the season, but no food available. Wifi in the lobby. Bikes can be left in locked garage. Bit shabby, other hotels might prove better. I wouldn’t bother again. Taroudant Hotel Salama 200MAD for the room Great hotel in the centre of town. Rooms are clean and modern. Wifi, good showers, café/restaurant with a relaxed feel. Bike parking at the front under the watchful eye of a guardian. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very recommended. Good food and menu wider that the usual suspects. Highly recommended. Taliouine Auberge Le Safran 200MAD for the room A basic hostel style location run on solar power. Rooms are basic and the electricity supply is limited. When meals are being cooked the lights and aircon are switched off. Small pool out of the back. Bikes can be left behind locked doors and a guardian is on duty. Quite a fun place and the staff are good. Food was good traditional fare. Wifi, sort of. Recommended, but don’t take it too seriously and you’ll have a good time. |
Rif
I can recommend some great rural places in the Rif mountains. Don't be scared by people trying to sell marihuana. It's not so bad as you may think:
Gite Talassemtane. Situated in the mountains, one hour east of Chefchaouen. Only reachable by piste. Comfortable. 350 DH per person half board, Gite Talassemtane | Decouvrez les montagnes de RIF Gite Jnanate. In a village near Cala Iris, one hour west from al Hoceima. Simple place, great service. 250 DH per person half board, gitejnanate-ed-gmail.com Chez Rachid. Bed and Breakfast in Tlatla Ketama. A bit expensive for what you get. But I think you can haggle down the price. 370 DH per person half board, rachidelazouzi-ed-hotmail.com |
In Merzouga, i'd suggest Ksar Sarnia / Chez Françoise. It is right beside Ksar Bicha if I remember.
Facing the dunes, w/ pool, great food and independent "cabins"... I stayed there 3 days. And this dude is a great host. ;-) |
Casa Linda in Chefchaoun
40e for a big room. Outside town, quiet, close enough to both old city and hiking. Good breakfast, great dinners (though slow - go to town if you're in a hurry). Friendly staff and off-street, inside the garden, parking for bikes. The morning guy has a good source of local olive if you're so inclined.

Casa Linda wi-fi
was crap, by the way.
And I'll second the recommendation above of Maison Berbari outside Asilah. They have pretty good wi-fi. |
House on Hill - Benslimane
Really liked this AirBnb place in the hills southeast of Benslimane. No a/c that I remember, so it could be a little warm in the summer. Has a fireplace but I didn't see any wood around so if I was going in the winter I would see if the owner could arrange a pile in advance. BBQ pit - bring your own charcoal, though again, maybe owner could provide?
The only con: it's off the grid, but the solar power gives plenty of electricity for light but - and this could be a big but after a dusty day on a bike - there's no hot water for a shower! https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/6951349 |
Hotel Al Mohit in Dahkla - 100 Dh a night for a room with two beds, although if you have double occupancy they say its 150 Dh. Bathroom down the hall

Chez Adil in Cap Sim (Oussam), the little village on the cliff north of Sidi Kaouki. Family run surf hostel, good food, super people. 150 dirham includes breakfast and dinner.

Camping Rekkam West end of Boudnib. French couple tun it, beer in the fridge, really good space. 70dh for a tent, 200 something for le demi maisonette.
Cafe Sahara at south end of piste from Boudnib to Enfold. 100dh gets you dinner and a carpet and good hospitality. Camping Tissint between Errachidia and Erfoud, in the palmerie of Ziz gorge. Nice, clean, cheap, Chef Ali Is a good guy. Epicerie (offlicence) near main Sq in Errachidia |
Rekkam Boudnib camping is a great site, with an owner who gets you a cold beer whilst checking in after a hard day on the piste, they do fantastic food and its a nice place to relax and meet the other guests
