Egypt: Bringing a bicycle as luggage/Buying a Scooter
I have a new $1,000US, Specialized touring bicycle. When I move to Egypt in a month, can I bring that with me as luggage? I don't understand the import tax on bicycles. Is it better to have the bicycle in the box still new, with receipt and documentation? Would there be a large customs tax on that? Or would it be better for me to ride the bicycle, dirty it up, package it in a different box, and bring it with me as luggage that way, potentially saving me, or costing me additional fees?
I also have questions about buying a scooter. I would like to buy a new Honda 150 PCX 2019. I believe that is impossible with the two-wheel ban the Egypt government has. I have a hard time finding any information online for buying scooters. Do you know a reputable website? Are there any brands that sell new scooters in Egypt? |
If you bring it in as a new bike there is a chance that you will have to pay import duty on it as a new bike, no idea how much this is in Egypt but I expect a lot. I suggest you ride it around for a month and put some wear on the tyres and make it look as used as possible. Packing it in the original box is a good idea, some purpose made cases are actually too big for oversize luggage and you cannot fly with them.
Unless asked I would not declare it, if it is your intention to take it home again it is a temporary import for your personal use so no duty payable but if you ask questions they might find ar reason to charge you. If it is within your weight allowance you should not have to pay to fly it but if along with your other possesions it is more you will pay of excess baggage, look up your airline's policy on flying bicycles and print it off to take to the airport, some check in staff don't know their own airline's rules. |
