Antarctic Trip

Anyone down in Ushaia either now or in the recent past know anything about Antarctic cruises? Heard it's about $2500 for 10 or 11 days. Can you get a last minute deal or is booking ahead important? Any tips very welcome after some fairly unhelpful e-mail enquiries.

One other question concerns customs. Obviously I cannot take the bike with me but can I leave Argentina without the bike on this trip?

Many thanks for any ideas.

Matt

Hello Matt. The info may be out-dated, but i think Grant and Susan went to Antarctica when they were in Argentina. Do a search if you haven't already
Good luck!

Yes, we did. It's on our Argentina page, under our trip - link on left.

DO not book in advance, as then you pay full fare. What you want is a boat leaving soon with empty berths. THEN you get the real deal. As low as US$2200 we've heard, to about 3500, depending on your skills, nerve, and the availability of berths. Time is from 7-10 days, try hard for the longer one. Just go to the harbour and ask, everyone knows where to point you.

You don't actually leave Argentina, there is no customs, so no problem with the bike. We left ours with the pensione we stayed at, very safe and very nice people.

Very much a MUST-DO trip - I can't imagine going all that way and not going to Antarctica - it was one of the highlights of our trip, even though we were running on credit card credit by then.

Hi,

For 10 night/11 day trips the cheapest quote I got was $2,500 on Explorer 1 in early December last year. The next cheapest was a Quark boat at $3,500.

Quark seem to be highly recommended but apparently don't offer last minute discounts http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/frown.gif

I found Rumbo Sur on the right hand side of the main street (with the bay on your left) the most friendly and informative.

However, the best trips are the ones to South Georgia - 21 days. There is more wildlife, bigger populations etc. But they're alot more $.

One lady I met in Ushuaia said the chair in her cabin kept falling over because it was so rough but the crew didnt think it was much at all.

These are supposed to be good: http://www.prevent-motion-sickness-scopolamine.com/

I hope to get on one once i've returned to Rio G and my bike, hopefully in a few days.

As Grant says - It has to be done.

Matt

Just checked my diary and the boat I mentioned above is the Polar Star.
