Anyone going: Copper Canyon, Mexico, Oct 31 - November 2 20

Looks like a great chance for newcomers to explore a little bit of Mexico without a huge investment of time or money.

Anyone else planning to go?! Want to meet in Nogalas Arizona?

Cheers,
Gerry

Grant Johnson 26 Feb 2003 07:39

Minimal details so far - there are a couple of great guys from the area working on setting it up - apparently we have cooperation from the local officials, and we are planning on lots of events and interesting stuff happening besides the usual slide show and a ride. Should be a great event!

You DO want to be there!

As soon as we have some stuff locked down we will be announcing it. Thanks for your patience.

Forgot to mention that I have a buddy supposedly coming on a GS Adventurer and when I spoke to Al Jesse, he was very interested in attending also. Pretty good company.

For those passing through Phoenix, the welcome mat is out. I can accomdate a few folks and I'm sure we can help out others with friends.

Cheers,
Gerry

I want to leave now, but the trip would be kind of cold down through canada. I could do a small slide show on Alaska in some little town like Batopilas. It sounds like a great time to me. Arizona would be my point of entry, and I dont know many people in AZ. If its for sure, I'll be there. If its not for sure, I might be there anyway!!!

Gypsy Tea 1 Mar 2003 01:18

Gerry,

count me in. I am in Queen Creek, AZ-just a few miles from you.

ALL are invited, details moving forward as we speak - at the moment we have support form the government, three hotels have offered full support, there will be conducted tours of the area, cultural events to meet the local people, slide shows, international travellers, and lots more.

It's going to be a great event, and Susan and I will be there, so we look forward to meeting you all!

Keep checking the meetings page - link on left - for more details as we work them out.

Grant,
>>It's going to be a great event, and Susan and I will be there, so we look forward to meeting you all!<<

Are there any more details on this trip yet. With my retirement moved up to an earlier date I may try and make this event just to meet some the folks.

Have ridden in Mexico before on the motorcycle, but would still like to meet up with someone that is going and ride along.

Take care,

John

Where is the meet town. I am planning on taking an offroad rail. This has been my project for this year and should be finished around that time. I will be leaving from Texas. I think the best route will probably be to go through Arizona though as opposed to El Paso.

pifa 12 Aug 2003 05:47

Hi,
I'll be in Copper for the party too. I'm coming from Minneapolis. Probably swing by Vegas. Anybody on the way?
See ya.

Hopefully I will be leaving from San Diego. I would like to go Down the Baja Peninsula and cross by ferry. Does anybody have info on the ferry's? Cost, Schedules, best place to cross, where to find info?

I have never done this by road in a relaxing mannor. It sounds like fun!(Usually riding dirt bikes on the 1000 corse.)

Thanks

Ron

rocket ron 14 Aug 2003 12:44

Answered my own question. a search of Baja ferries on the web brought up several sites The best one I found;HTTP://math.ucr.edu//ftm has the most current info. For veh import info see baja bound.com.This is an insurance site with lots of good info. I have never worried or needed a vehicle permit in baja sur. There can be confusion about vehicle permits south of San Quintien. Some tourist info centers in San Diego, say you need one south of San Quintien. Same as a tourist visa. (I have never needed or thought to get one in Baja, It is my understanding the mainland is much more strict.

I'm trying to work out a trip to the Mexican BMW convencion in Cuernavaca (south of Mexico City). Anyone planning on attending that. It's Oct. 23 or there abouts.

If I can figure out how to register, I may hit the Copper Canyon meeting on my way back to Chicago(only a 'little' out of the way. :-)

Hey everyone, Chris and I just left Copper Canyon and it was amazing. The road to Batopilas is fantastic, for adventure go back up it after a huge storm! Creel is great and offers everything you might need, take earplugs for a good sleep (at least during the weekends). In Batopilas make friends with the locals if you want to find the secret stash of Cervezas. Have a blast! Chris says look out for the burros.

k7lro 11 Sep 2003 04:42

We'll be leaving Phoenix on Thursday morning, Oct. 30. There will be at least two of us, proabably more. I can sleep at least a one couple in our spare bedroom and a couple more on da floor. There are several hotels very close and convenient that won't cost you a fortune. If anyone wants to meet up, let me know.

We plan to return on Monday, Nov. 3rd.

Hope this starts to build some momentum. Grant and Susan have been too busy traveling around and having too much fun this summer to be of any real use. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

k7lro 16 Sep 2003 01:59

Can anyone recommend a good insurance provider for motorcycle insurance for the Mexico trip? Thanks!

k7lro 16 Sep 2003 02:27

Nevermind... did a quick web search and found several. AAA does a reasonable job so I'll probably go with them.

rocket ron 16 Sep 2003 02:54

As an insurance agent in San Diego, The best place to buy insurance is at the border. Many American insurance companies will cover you to a certiian point south of the border. Companies vary the farthest one I know of is covering 75 miles south of the border. Check your policies!

THE MEXICAN GOVERMENT DOES NOT RECONIZE COVERAGE FROM AN AMERICAN INSURANCE COMPANY. YOU WILL SPEND TIME IN JAIL IF YOU ARE IN A ACCIDENT WITH OUT MEXICAN INSURANCE. WEATHER YOU ARE AT FAULT OR NOT!!

The Auto Club may sell you a policy for Mexico but make sure it is issued by a mexican company!

I see this happen all the time. The U.S. will reconize a Mexican insurance company. It is also rare to find Comp or Collision coverage for mortorcycles by a Mexican company in the San Diego area but it can be done.

This is for those who worry about such things!

We tried to get Mexican insurance from AAA at the border in El Paso. The AAA people were disorganized and didn't seem to know how to issue us insurance. And, it was going to be more expensive than we had been quoted.

So, we called Sanborn's just down the street. They said "no problem, come on over". We got insurance for 3 bikes in about 20 minutes, at about half the cost of AAA.

I would recommend Sanborn's over AAA. And I believe you can get insurance from them on the internet.

Story

k7lro 16 Sep 2003 09:13

Good deal. I'll check out Sanborns. I called BMW to discuss what I needed from there to cross the border since my bike isn't quite paid off and they also recommended a carrier. I called this carrier and was told that their deduct. is $5000. Heck, my bike's barely worth that so I declined. :-)

I'll call Sanborn's tomorrow.

rocket ron 16 Sep 2003 10:24

You can also try Baja Bound.com. I have never used them. Nor have I priced them, yet. You can buy on line and they do cover the mainland. Why I haven't used them I don't know. Maybe because I'm usually dirt biking in Mex and haven'nt had the need to buy auto or mortorcycle ins. The web site has lots of good info.

[This message has been edited by rocket ron (edited 16 September 2003).]

rocket ron 16 Sep 2003 10:42

I just priced it out and it was $22usd for 8 days. This price seems about right.

Insurance:

AAA was a complete rip-off last time we headed to Copper Canyon... We ended up going with Sanborn's

http://www.sanbornsinsurance.com/

You can get it at larger border towns on the US side.

Route to Creel

The road to Creel from El Paso is long and boring, but fast. A great alternative is to
head South from Deming, NM, through Columbus, and wind your way through the mountains. Much nicer ride!

Ferries & train from La Paz

http://www.bajaferries.com/

There is a scenic train from Topolobampo/Los Mochis to Creel. We have been unsuccessful getting the bikes loaded in Creel last December, but rumor is that you *can* get them loaded at the terminal stations of Topo and Chihauha. It leaves Los Mochis at 6 a.m.

I spent a week in the copper canjon area riding trails about a month ago on my way south. A lot are navigable by even slightly dual sport bikes. (Batopilas for example) If you intend to ride parts of the 'El camino real' or go south from the road ends, you may need to be a bit more carefull. In particular, if you ride into areas growing crops you don't expect...... turn around.

Having said that, and having rebent my bike with a crowbar.. I had a fantastic time in the area and the routes and views are incredible.. even from the tarmac only roads.

Have fun guys. Wish I was back there...

ritmo 22 Sep 2003 08:05

I'm one-lungin' it down from Lousiana. Should leave early AM 29 Oct and cross on 30 Oct at Ojinaga. Think the only person I could link up with easily is John (bigtexrider) but he hasn't answered back to a previous post somewhere else in this labyrinth-like BB.

This board is worse than navigating Madrid all alone at the age of 19.

I will be wearing my orange shirt for those that know what that means.

Last one there is a rotten egg and will be subjected to Mexican taxi races with K7 spurring on the drivers with "Dale cana!" whilst carrying a spare beer in a back pocket like the hillbilly he used to be.

k7lro 22 Sep 2003 12:00

Yep. I know what an orange shirt means...F650's on the loose.

Nuthin from Nuthin leave Nuthin.....you gotta have something if you wanta be with me. Opps...trying to get too Clever for my own good and I know damn well I can't compete.

I hear that some limp-wristed army of one from LA is bringing the beer. What color is your PD by the way? Red/white/blue or B/W?

:-) Yeehaa... this is going to be a great trip.

ritmo 25 Sep 2003 13:02

Oh-ho, now ya done it...you ain't never been bit til a pissed off Chihuahua dog's jumped up like a reebok and bit clean through yer gizzard with them big ol' buggy eyes all popped out and lookin' like he's runnin' on Bolivian marching powder.

Limp-wristed??

That's you, ya ol' Bammy Bamboozler. :-)

This here Rocky Mountain boy temporarily doomed to chase crawfish in LA is ridin' a genuine CPT America color scheme buzz-bike down to see the neighbors in Creel.

Ike might be old but his heart thumps plenty fast and we's ain't gonna lose to no up and comer out westerners. No, sireee!

I'm waiting to see if the KLR650 I want gets bought in time to break it in and then do some little mods. Wife is having foot surgery a week earlier so have to make sure she is ok before I take off for the hills. I'll keep checking back.

John

k7lro 26 Sep 2003 10:40

Well, we all remember what happened to Cpt. America so I expect you to show up in one piece.

There's nothin' wrong with crawfish. I'd ask you to bring me some etouffee but I'd be afraid it by the time you rolled into Creel.

You have had etouffee by now right?

Anywho, I've got the same color scheme but...mine's obviously faster. :-)

Watch out for distant relatives at the chaingang gathering.... they know you've been insulting me.

As always, safe travels...see you in a few weeks.

k7lro 26 Sep 2003 10:45

BTW, Ritmo, I've reserved a tent spot at the campground, which you're welcome to either pitch a tent upon. I've been told that I do snore but have no actual knowledge of it myself. We can put the bikes in between for some kind of barrier as necessary.

I *wish* I could find a place to hand a genuine Belem hammock but that's doubtful. It's small enough that I may bring it anyway.

G. Kennedy 9 Oct 2003 07:21

I am new to this group, but planning on attending the gathering in Creel. I am hoping to catch the ferry from Santa Rosalia to Guaymas, but am coming up with very conflicting information. I have been to bajaferries.com and the Sematur site but only find current info on the la Paz ferries. Has anyone else had better luck.
