bike storage in Uruguay or BA
Anyone know of a good spot to leave a bike or two in Uruguay or Buenos Aires (Dakar motors is full for know). Also, how much time will Uruguays Aduana permit to leave the bike.

Any motorcycle dealership will gladly store your motorcycle for a fee since any income oportunity is always welcome in a country that still counts 1/4 of its population under the poverty level.(2/3 4 years ago)
Some references for you to bargain : Average argentine salary : around 1000 pesos (1/3 of the population under 500), this is around 6p/h Average labour cost for a motorcycle mechanic in an official dealership in BA : 30 pesos an hour 20 pesos in the rest of the country. Average rental price of a small apartment in B.A : 600 pesos/month The best is to get to meet some portenos so that they bargain for you, since a foreign accent will automaticly light the "gringo price" alarm in any business owner in B.A. |
I can keep it in my garage.
I live in Junin, 250 Km west from BA. You can leave your bike in my house for 1 dollar a day. I can ride it out the country and in back if the time is more 8 months . Yes, we wages are 800 dollar a month, Greeting and enjoy Argentine...

Be carefull with dealers, they might "get robbed" in your absence and your bike will be the first one in the package...
Uruguay has a 12 month permit for foreing motorvehicles... I have some friends over there who will be glad to help you... Ride safe Loner index riders_tradingpost@yahoo.com |
You are making a point Loner, mechanics in Argentina have a very bad reputation, deserved or not, does this mean that we should generalise and become paranoid...
|
I'm not paranoid I'm argentinian, and I was a federal police officer for 7 years, I know the "underworld" of some shops, of course, there are not all the same, but Can you tell the difference?? I don't, I can guess though!!!

I don't remember the guys name, but if you stop by the BMW shop they can give you the contact info for the president of the BMW motorcycle club. He runs a car and motorcycle storage place. It's not a repair shop, just vehicle storage. If someone "robbed" that place, your bike is about the last thing they would steal- there is some seriously nice stuff in there.
I left my bike there and there were other travellers bikes that had been there for years. |
leave the bike in montevideo uruguay
A friend from Montevideo recommended a repair shop to me, in fact the name cropped up a couple of times during my stay in Uruguay. A friendly fella also waved me down whilst I was riding in the city to say that if I had any problems and needed assistance he could help; that person was Kevin, the son of Willi @ Willi Motos.
Both Kevin & Willi are keen overland bikers and they have a workshop full of collectable bikes ranging from BMW's to Harley's and even a Nortki (a hybrid Norton/Suzuki) They have a few tires in stock and since they're in the business of rebuilding and repairing bikes as well as riding them overland I'd say that they're just the kind of people to understand and assist you if you run into problems in Uruguay. I should add that Willi doesn't speak English but Kevin does. Kevin doesn't work at the workshop but he is often there. contact at: lemes54@hotmail.com ride safely Kevin |
