Border Insurance
 

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a repeat, I couldn't find a catch-all in my searches so I figured I'd just ask.

As far as motorcycle insurance goes, there seems to be divided opinion as to whether one should have insurance before leaving home or just buy it at the border. So my question is, do all South American countries offer the border insurance? Or is it necessary to purchase it beforehand for certain countries? Mostly this is a new project for me and I don't quite have the big picture yet.

There are a few scenarios you will run into depending on the countries. Some countries will not let you import your bike until you have insurance. At these borders ie (ecuador/peru) they have insurance available at the border. When you get to the Mercusor countries of South America (Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Uraquay) you can buy one insurance that covers all of those countries. I just paid $70 for six months for all of them.
