Bordercrossing Chili - Argentina (Mendoza) !!

Hello everybody,
Be carefull when you cross this border that you explicitly ask for the ´Temporary Importation Vehicle´- document. Because we almost left without and when we went back half an hour later they said we don´t need it! But you definitly do. Don´t leave without. Chris and Erin Ratay had a similar expierence a few weeks earlier on that same bordercrossing.
Cheers, Pascale

I second that!

Be careful at this border. We had crossed between Argentina and Chile 5 times prior to this further South with no problems. Every border was 10 mins in and out.

Then we came to the border between Mendoza and Santiago. What a shambles!! They firstly gave us the wrong documentation, then sent us to the wrong desk etc etc. Ended up taking 2+ hours. We ended up having to tell half the people what they should be doing with our documentation. Then they didn´t want to let us go because they tried to tell us that the Chilean temporary import document should have been stamped at the Argentine border, even though it´s a new document you get once you reach the Chilean Customs... very frustrating!

Didn't had any paperwork problems at all crossing it just few weeks ago.

The only thing confusing at this border is that Argentinian customs is at Chilean side when coming from Argentina.

Normally I don't like big bordercrossings, but on this road I must say it's the excellent scenery that makes it worth it tho!

Hi Johan,

Yes, the very same road. Some unbelievable colours you see if the weather is good:

The steepest parts of this road has this kind of scenery. Takes you up over 3200 meters:

Good roads, Margus

definitly worthwhile just crossing the border for the scenery

hej, was the reason we took this bordercrossing and indeed it is a lot different then all the bordercrossings we had, from Chili to Argentina, all paperwork is done in Argentina and going to Chili, all paperwork is done in Chili. On the Argentinian side, we think very well organised, except that they dont know you HAVE to have your TID. on the chilean side, all outside, very unprofession, but ok. all went very well on our way back, back into chili.

BUT as you wrote...it is a very beautifull road..not to miss.

cheers,
pascale and gretel
