Brazil visa
Do USA citizens have to have a visa to enter Brazil? Obtainable at Border? Heard it costs $100...is that right? Thanks for any advice.

Yes, US citizens need a visa to enter Brazil as a tourist. I believe the max initial period is 6 months with a possible 6 month extension.
It is not obtainable to the border. Check your local consulate. Here is the one in NYC. http://www.brazilny.org/index_English.html ------------------ Brooklyn Dakar http://motorcycleramblings.blogspot.com/ |
Unfortunately one is allowed only max. 180 days per year in Brasil on a tourist visa.
If you do not need a visa (like EU citizens) you might try entering again through a small borderpost As I once had the luck they did not know(?)about this 6 month rule... Marcel |
By now you know, US citizens do need a tourist visa, costing $100. It is good for multiple entries, but must be used within 90 days of issuance. It could be renewed, in the past, by going to a Policia Federal office and being either ignored or hassled. As I was in Porto Alegre and had a friend in Montevideo, I went visiting and stopped at the Brasil consulate there. They re-issued my visa on the spot, as I had a return air ticket from SP to the States. The visa used to be valid for five years if you wanted to return to Brasil after your initial visit.
