Buying and registering a bike in Peru
I've found a solid bike I plan to buy in Lima. However, I'm unsure about who I should trust to do the paperwork legitimately and how long it will take before I go ride....the owner says we go to the notary, get the name changed and then it's legal for me to ride, but then it will take about a week to receive then registration card, but I can still ride without that card. Any thoughts about this or someone who has experience purchasing in Peru?

I live and work in Peru. It takes 17 'dias habiles' for all the paperwork and plates... so that is most of a month when you discount all weekends and government holidays.. NOT a good use of your trip days!
I offer to purchase it, paper it and prep it for you before you arrive. The bike titles don't show a name in Peru, it is on a scanned strip that can only be read at borders. I would get it all in my name, then when you arrive we would do the change to your name (1/2 day), but you can take off right away on the bike and I can pick up the new title and send it to you at a city near the border that you are exiting... Does that help? Cheers! Toby |
Parking the bike in Lima for a few months
Hi Toby,
Do you know by chance any sage place in Lima where I could leave my bike for apprx 6 months? I´m mainly looking for a garage either gratis or paying just a little. Thanks a lot |

It is a little more complicated than you think if it is a foreign registered bike. At the border they will only give you 90 days. If you leave the country during that time, you can apply for a stopping of the days until you return, but it requires a little bit of paperwork and applying for it. I've done it various times... but it is a little tricky.. Cheers, Toby |
