Buying Bike in Ecuador
 

Hi Guys

Im flying this dezember to Quito to travell south (Peru Bolivia Chile) with my best friend and his Girlfriend.

Does somebody knows how easy/difficult it is to buy a bike in Quito with proper Licens so that we can travel without Problems to Peru Bolivia and Chile? Any good proposals for a good store to buy a Bike? At home im driving an old Yamaha XT600Z 1VJ but i think a light 250cc would be perfekt for the trip.

Buying a motorcycle in Ecuador is very expensive. I suggest you to buy in Colombia or Peru where there are less taxes than Ecuador. You can check a web page where people sell em here:

BEWARE of any of those motorcycle selling websites in South America!!

(1) Most budget motorcycle owners in South America, although they have the owners card on the motorcycle, it is not in their name, and may not even know the original owner to get him/her to sign it over to you, which means you won't be able to take it across borders.

(2) As parts are difficult to find or too expensive, most motorcyles in have welded parts inside the engine, like a transmission gear that will blow out at high speeds or under strain leaving you stuck at 14,000 ft and no help! You wouldn't beleive how common this is!

(3) Most motorcycles in South America, unless valued at over $10,000 USD have had REALLY bad maintenance. We had a German guy buy a 400cc bike in Lima, then it blew up just miles from us here in central Peru. When we openned it up we found there we not any air filters!!

Besides the issues mentioned, admin in ECU is from another world. It will take you ages to get the bike properly registered on your name as a non resident. If you buy new count minimum one month. If you think of buying used ..... don't do it.

Buying a Bike in South America
 

I arrived in Colombia 2 weeks ago with intentions of buying a cheap used bike but after doing more research its definitely better to buy a new one for a number of reasons:

1) Registration - its 100% in your name and no racy vehicle history or licensing issues.
2) Condition - new from the manufacturer (as long as you buy from a reputable, licensed dealer) and should have no problems.
3) Warranty - mine came with a 12-month warranty
4) Maintenance - came with a 1-year fully-covered plan w/oil changes
5) Borders - you can definitely go across borders with the car passport associated with your passport just register your EIN / Tax ID at the local office

I AGREE! Unless you know the seller personally and the history of the motorcycle... buy new. This goes for anywhere in South America!
