camping in Careterra

We are just entering Ecuador today and I know that its a bit early to talk about Careterra but I am thinking about shipping my camping gear back home after salta , actually if I could avoid camping at all I will ship my gear from quito , I like camping but my partner is not too much into it so why carrying gear for nothing . Any recent info will be greatly appreciated.

Each to their own but in my view it would be a real shame not to camp through the Andes. I've bush camped in some stunning locations throughout Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina and as a result I've had some of the worlds most breathtaking scenery all to myself.

There are several official campsites along the Caraterra. This one in particular, on Lago General Carrera sticks in my mind - S46 37.975 W72 39.934

A night in your tent on the Salar de Uyuni is an experience you will never forget.

I enjoy bush camping but its not for everybody.

Hope that helps

Adam

Camping

Thanks Jedi
I agree with you and did the same road twice camping on it years ago but my partner is not too much into camping so I am considering shipping all the gear for it and just riding from hotel to hotel , did you see many hotel or posada where to sleep on the careterra , as far as salar I am still contempleting to do it camping but that may change too??.

Hi there

I assume you talk about Carretera Austral in Chile?

Don't ship your gear home, you will regret it when arriving there. My best night so far wild camping on my 2 1/2 travel was in Carretera Austral. It has been the most amazing part of South America so far when talking about nature.

All the best for the road

I too am an avid camper and my favourite places/nights were camping, but coming at the question from another angle you can save A LOT of money in Chile/Argentina by camping. There are plenty of official camping locations in both of those countries, and we picked up a Chile camping guide at the gas station for 5$ (which was reasonably helpful).

Oh and there are hospedajes in the small towns on Ruta 7, so if you did happen to get rid of your gear you would be fine if you planned your days to go from town to town.

I hope that helps, and happy travels

I have a list of camping locations we stayed at on our Americas trip on my blog. Just use the link in my signature

caretera Austral

Thanks for your help guys , I agree with you that is an incredible area to do camping in but since my partner is not really interested in camping my guess is we will ship the gear from Santiago and ride from town to town.

Thansk again
