Carretera Austral
Hey,
Im looking at doing the Carretera Austral from FutaleufĂș to Villa O higgins and then coming back into Argentina to Continue on Ruta 40. Does anyone know what the Gasoline availability is like on the CA? I am driving 2 up and can get about 250-300Km on a tank. Ive read that you can get gasoline every 300Km or so but others have stated different figures. If anyone could clarify that would be greatly appreciated. |
Did it a week ago. 300 km range is definitely enough. Just fill up every gasstation you pass. Have fun, it is one of the most beautiful roads we did.

Is it possible to do the Villa O'Higgins to Argentina via the lake crossing by motorcycle? What's the furthest point south you can switch to/from the R40 without going back up the Carreterra Austral? |
O'Higgins to Argentina is almost inpossible on a motorbike, on a cycle it is possible. The most southern crossing into Argentina is via paso Roballos. There is customs etc. On both sides of the border.

To ad to my last post. We met cyclists who did Ohiggins to El Chalten. They had to wait for a week in Ohiggins for a boat wich would take them, they had to carry their cycles in a few occasions. www.amsterdamtoanywhere.nl |
Though so - many thanks!

Don't count of fuel being available every day at O'Higgins. They were dry for two days when we were there.

Did you drive the eastern seaboard route by any chance? |

Always ask riders (car and truck drivers, too) coming in the other direction where the gas stations are open and where they're closed. This changes day by day, sometimes hour by hour.
I've posted previously that someone I know did the Villa O'Higgins to El Chaltén route on a DRZ. He said it was fairly rugged; I saw some photos of, for example, mules towing the DRZ up a few choice, muddy pitches. He said he'd been told he was the first to do it on a big bike, but that locals had made it on the little Chinese 125s. Mark |

Need to increase the %Fill rate to "All" to see the actual route clearly |
Fuel on CA is not a prob
Agree with Petrus, we joined the CA after crossing into Chile at the Los Antiguos/Chile Chico crossing and went north to Futaleufu back into AR. Just fill up when you see it, no problems. Be aware a lot of roadworks just north and south of Puyuhuapi so bit rougher there than other places on the section we did.
