Chile, Peru, Bolivia - Starting in June 2018

We are going to spend 10 weeks from the end of June to September this sommer driving through northern Chile, Peru and Bolivia. We are planning to buy a car in Santiago and making our way up afterwards. The end of our travel will again be in Santiago.

We got some questions on the route. Are there generally some border crossing to avoid or a preferred way to travel those three countries . For example is the route Chile - Bolivia-Peru better than the other way around?
Also we are open to general advises and the roads and routes. (And also if somebody has a car to sell in Santiago at the end of June?)

Thanks, for your help!

Hi,

I live in Arica / Chile and i recommend you to buy the car in Iquique or Arica. Both cities are Tax Free so the price of cars are half price than Santiago.
Arica is 500 km far from La Paz and 1000 km from Lima.
If you want some advice about routes don’t hesitate in contact me.

Are you going to buy a Chilean registered car or a foreign car from a foreigner?

To make things easier and more straightforward, if you are North American, try to buy a north american plated car (its very easy to do remotely the transfer title) and if you are european, try to buy a european plated car.

You can find plenty of travellers to sell their vehicle after their trip here:

Its very important to drive a car with all related documents in your name.

Safe travels ;-)

i would recommend a car registered in Chile because of the reasons thepinproject just told.

It´s easier and faster to sell, it´s easy to put it in your name.

for an itinerary you can contact me...
