chile & peruvian places of plunder in the old days
 

i know this is a bit off topic, but i was hoping that some of you out there might have some knowledge regarding places off the pacific coast that people like francis drake and tom cavendish found, raided and rampaged ............ im off riding from arica into peru and up around bolivia in may and it would be superb for me to visit some old colonial towns along the way if i can......... its mad really, coz there isnt really alot of info out there regarding this in detail....... i know they both plotted up in arica for a short time and were a pain in the neck to the spanish there.............. cheers peeps

Drake In Valparaiso and Coquimbo
 

Around 1578 Sir F.Drake, attack Valparaiso, and the go to Coquimbo, there he stay in Guayacan Bay, the legend says he hide a big treasure there.
Recently in 1998 the major of coquimbo built a statue in his honor, but due to the pression of the people, who dont want a statue of a pirate that destroy the city one time, the statue was modified and the sword was taked away. But you still can visit the statue(located at "mirador de los navegantes") is pretty and is in a place that has a nice view of guayacan Bay shelter of pirates such drake, Sharp and Davis.

Near the statue you will find a very old english cementery and a chapel designed by Eiffel.

Also Near Coquimbo are nice places to ride.

Los Villos in Chile is supposed to be named after an English pirate Lord Willow, though I can find no reference to this fella anywhere outside of Los Villos bars. North of there is, I think, Bahia de los Ingleses (or something similar), where the locals swear the English pirates buried treasure. However, they also swore that sea-urchins were a tasty treat, when they in fact taste like a drowned man's arsehole. Make of that what you will.

PS There's more British pirate history on the Caribbean coast of Central America than the Pacific Coast of South America. But that might be irrelevant to you.
