Chinese motorbike advice in bolivia
 

Hello,

My friend and I are looking to buy new Chinese motorbikes in Sucre, Bolivia for a trip to Patagonia. After reading several posts on the reliability of different brands and shopping around for the bikes, we found three common brands (Taurus, Montero, and Pegasus) for which 250cc models are available for cheap (about 1450-1650 with plates and papers). I saw a few posts about Pegasus, but cannot find any info about the other two, I´m guessing they are listed under different names. Does anyone have personal experience with those two brands or know the actual manufacturer of those brands?

Here in Honduras we have a number of Chinese made motorcycles. After looking at a number of bikes it seems to me that they all come from the same place. Pick one with a dealership that you trust the most.

I dont really know that much about the different 250cc Chinese models, but my advise would be to try to get a copy of a Japanese engine. They copy the Honda XL250 engines and the Suzuki DR200 engine.

Myself I have two MT125 Montero scooters here in Samaipata. And I can tell you that they are really bad quality. Btw. Montero is the city here in Bolivia that imports most Chinese bikes, its near Santa Cruz, so this is the reason for the name.

When you buy them with a plate, there are a few things that you should look out for. First, make sure that Soat is included and that it is valid, that all import taxes and road taxes are paid. Second, make sure they understand your first name and your last name, your birthday and your passport number correctly.

Thanks for the advice, we will definitely be checking up on taxes and insurance.

Also, I was curious if you knew which motors tend to be copies of Japanese models in Bolivia. Is this something the dealer knows, or are certain chinese brands always copies?

A month ago another traveler bought a Chinese bike in Sucre, and he posted about it here on the Hubb, also his selling add from Ecuador you should find here on the Hubb.

Here in Peru we know every Chinese model as we prepare them for the long Epic Ride of South America for foriegners. There are a million names, but really only 4 manufacturers. You can't go by the name. Send me pix (especially a close up of the engine) and I can tell you which are the reliable ones and which to stay away from.

Realize that ALL of them really require a complete tear down and build up like we do in Peru if you want something reliable. We prep them to do 0 to 16,000 ft on the same jet, something no one else (that I know of) has achieved with these bikes.

Hey, if you need any advice for how to get them registered in Sucre, let me know. I went through this some months ago and know the process. It can be quite annoying...
