Colombia - Which route do people take to Cartagena?

Do people generally approach Cartagena, Colombia from Venezuela or travelling up through Ecuador?

I have heard people mention that some areas in Colombia are safe, where as others are no go regions.

Any advice and pointers would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Iain.

Iain, see the thread "Routes South from Bogota" in the Route Planning Forum. Lots of good info there from a couple of fellows that live there.

From Venezuela

It is generally considered that when approaching from Venezuela, that Cucuta is the safest point to cross. That's the way I came, stayed over in San Gil, (lovely), and then headed to BOG, MDN and from there a 2 day ride to Cartagena. I won't know myself until next year, but I believe you are more exposed coming from Ecuador, but enjoy Colombia as much as you can. It was the highlight of 12 countries for me. So much so that I am returning in a couple of months to live there. Just remember that despite how incredibly safe things feel, there lurks a danger, that you won't and hopefully never will encounter, but exists anyway.
