Colombia Venezuela border bike storage
Over the years I've read several post about storing bikes in the no mans land at the Colombia Venezuela border crossing but I can't find anything in my searches of the Hubb.
Can someone tell me some specifics, such as what transportation is available to an airport? Which border crossing? Etc.. As always, the help from this site is invaluable and greatly appreciated. |
There are vehicle storage businesses in the no man's land between Maicao, Colombia and Guarero, Venezuela. A friend passed through there a month ago. I asked and learned from him that there are at least two places. One is an open lot and the other is covered. They are located closer to the Colombian side. He didn't ask the rates.
There is usually transportation available from a frontier. It is more a question of which airport do you want to access. If you can't find a bus at the border, then hire a taxi and go to Maicao where there will no doubt be a bus terminal. If you decide to head into Venezuela, you can hire a moto taxi or regular taxi to cross the no man's land. There is definitely an empty stretch between these two countries. Much more than you would want to walk, if you are allowed. Considering you will have some manner of luggage, hiring a taxi is a given, if you can't find a bus within walking distance. If by chance you arrive at an hour when no taxi or bus is available, then hitch a ride. How long do you need to store you motorcycle? If you are thinking it will be a few months, then ask when you enter (Colombia?) for as much time as possible. Explain that you need to store the motorcycle and get advice on extending the permit if they can't do anything extraordinary at the border. |
Thanks Peter
Thanks Peter, this is information I was hoping for. I'm looking at storing the bike for six months which I understand is beyond what Columbia allows. I have no idea what the closest airport would be but I'm guessing Cartengina?

airports
Check for flights out of Barranquilla (BAQ) on the Colombian side and Maracaibo (MAR) on the Venezuelan side. Both are closer than going all the way to Cartagena (CTG), but it could be cheaper to catch a bus to the later.
The economy in Venezuela went off the rails recently, so flying out of an airport there might be more expensive or more uncertain than its worth. |
Don't under estimate the power of the black market now in VZ, things are very good there for the dollar now.
If you are up to it, you can rearrange your Colombian import papers, I left my bike there nearly 10 months without problem after doing some modifications and re-entered the country without problems. If worse comes to worse it is easy to leave the country without checking out. Having current SOAT is most important by far. |
Good tip!
That's a good tip Throttlemidst. Considering I'll be leaving the country on a boat an expired TVIP may not be a problem. I doubt if I'll chance it though unless absolutely necessary.
