Colombian Moto Insurance - Where to buy??
 

Intensive googling came up with nothing, so I´ll ask a new...

Where I can I buy seguro for my moto in Colombia? The option to buy 1 - 3 months cover as opposed to a year´s policy would be ideal. I´ll be entering from Ecuador, so a company based in the South would be best.

Even better would be if someone knows of a broker that operates online so that I can arrange all this via email prior to even entering the country. I did this for Argentina and it worked a treat.

What say you people in the know?

The company listed have a lot of offices around the country, it looks like Popayan is the nearest to Ipales. If you find one at the border let people know.

I'm not sure all places can sell insurance to foreigners. I do know that there is a bike shop in Cali that will sell travellers the required SOAT. The rules tend to be obscure and sometimes 'bendable' regarding insurance for 3 months. Most places told me they wanted a year. I forget what they sold me in Cali.

Talk to Mike at the Casa Blanca Hostel. He'll point you in the right direction.

The point of my post, was t let people know it was possible, and where to go.
Yes, we got it for 1 month each, no problems.

I know of someone I sent the info to that used the Cartagena office (info on the companies website). He got 2 months insurance.

You do not need to go to a motorbike shop.

As most people land in Bogota or Cartagena it should be easy enough, entering from Colombia or Venezuela may be harder.

I've also met and spoken to Mike in Cali, and he agrees it is important to get insured in Colombia.

We *really* need a sticky for insurance in South America.

Now wondering where I can buy it in Ecuador :-)

I can never find anything using the search engine on this forum and google doesn´t always come up trumps. A sticky would be useful. Or maybe something in the planning section.

Coming from Ecuador, I just asked customs at the border crossing. Colombian customs were very friendly, told me 2 places I could buy it in Ipiales (the first town in Colombia). I bought 3 month insurance from inside the big mall on the Eastern big plaze (Plaza Indepedencia it's called I think – the last big plaza on the way to Las Lajas cathedral).
Took about 10 minutes, cost about $50 from what I remember.

If you are in the UK or anywhere you could buy liability insurance which covers you in Colombia if you ask the folks at SanbornsInsurance from Texas USA . check www,sanbornsinsurance.com and they can direct you to their BROWNSVILLE TX branch which sells this insurance as a >Central America policy but it also covers COLOMBIA. A month cover costs about $185US dollars. It is only offered rhrough their office in Brownsville

Coming from San Cristobal (Venezuela), migracion is at the border but the aduana is in Cucuta--I took several miles of local streets to get there, but everyone seems to know where it is. They will not give you temporary import docs without insurance. Go across the street from the aduana gate and ask at the kiosks selling soda and snacks; one of the women there will call an agent who will come with the forms and know-how. I bought a month's worth, but I don't remember how much it cost. The kiosk women will also guard your bike while you go fuss around inside getting your papers.

Entering by air in Bogota, no one required insurance. I went without, and used my American insurance card when stopped. Of course, this is not recommended....

You might be able to buy and international insurance that will cover your 3rd party liability in Colombia, but the local authorities here will not accept that as your coverage. You will need to present a Colombian bought SOAT.

After living here 3 years now and having dealt with the authorities and having meet several hundred motorcycle travelers I would not take any chance on not having the SOAT. 3 month is only about 40 USD and as this post document you can even be lucky and find a company that will cover you for only one month as well.

Still a chance to wave then, just got to Peru, using the coast road, surf is great :-)

Not been able to buy insurance here yet though, guy a border was not interested and then Tumbres was too hectic in the heat to find an office.

Entering from Venezuela in Paraguachon (the road Maracaibo-Maicao), you can buy a 3 months SOAT policy at the border, in an office just across a little street (the big yellow sign) to the right of the DIAN.

Was that you we passed today north of Trujillio ?

In the Seguros Del Estado you can buy 3rd party liability (think it is called "seguro obligatorio") - 25$ for 60 days, which is the amount of days that the DIAN gives your bike and the immigration gives your passport.

The Seguro Del Estado are located all over. Just ask a taxi driver and they'll show you! Hope this helps..
